my sewing projects(image heavy) update: shorts of failure 6/15

Jun 11, 2007

    1. I just thought a good way to improve is to lessen mistakes and simply do things better... but if you dont see em yourself then that could be a problem I guess... so uhmm I hope people would give their comments and suggestions on how I can improve... be as honest as you can be ok... I mean if that sleeve looks really wrong just uhmmm say that something is really wrong with it I guess if thats what you think.. so that I can make a better one on my next attempt :)...

im really new to sewing and I will need all the help and ideas that I can get...

oh yeah... I use hand stitching on all of them and I dont think Im gonna be moving on to using a sewing machine anytime soon.

here's my first creation... I think I made it on may 26+-... its supposed to be a simple shirt :)

heres the second one a few days after... it opens in the front with snap ons... I didnt knew how to make buttons yet at that time and I didnt knew where to get em...

and my third... another 4 days after the last one... this time I found some small buttons at joanns and tried to do it the right way but I cant make it work nicely... the last button at the bottom barely closes... im not really sure how to make that hole right... it was a prototype for something in the future, just to see if I got the measurements right... but it sorta looks good as it is in a way...

this is my 4th... It says it was finished on the 7th of june... hikari loves it a lot ... but I dont let her wear it casually in the house since the feathers fly all over the place ... I guess this was the very first dress that I really made by using the real fabric that I intended it to use... the design was from a coat on vogue... I simply added the feathery stuff.

heres my latest one... I made it yesterday... you sorta tie it on the sides... I wanted to try something new on this one, to try to lessen the number of pieces to sew...

im sorry im really new to this and I dont even know the words to use... well uhmm... please just say what you want to say ok :) ANY form of criticism is more than welcome and much appreciated... :)

      thanks in advance :)

    2. I think the fabric for the first two gives the illusion of them being a little ill fitted i think - but man my jaw dropped the further down i scrolled.

I really really really love the third shirt and that coat you made! It looks really good and professionally made! The bottom shirt/skirt thing is really awesome too! :fangirl:

    3. Those clothes are really nice. All hand sewn? :o
Anyway,I really like the coat and the last shirt you made. They seem to fit your doll nicely.
I've found that snap fasteners are a good substitute for buttons.
I cant think of any criticism to say... just that the clothes look nice and well fitted, except for the first shirt which looks a bit big.Umm.. that's all I can think of. *_*

    4. Lovelovekitty:
I love that blue sea themed fabric :) but its a bit rough, I dont think its for clothes. I think its for something else but I dont know what... as for the bottom one... Im not sure what its really called either hhuhuhummm...

      thanks for your comment :)

      oochiehead:
I dont use the sewing machine because mom would hear it... er my mom doesnt like the idea of me sewing huhuhuhmmm. She wants to make hikari's clothes HERSELF... besides, the one that I have is just a $20 one from Target uhhuhuuhhummm.. it works alright though, I think i mean it can sew so I guess it works...

snap fastener? I dont know what they are... Im sorry im really new to sewing. Ill look for it next time I go to joanns :) Its always nice to try new things I think Ill try using it on my next dress if Id find some that is...

hahahaha well the first one was really weird looking...
I dont even know why but it really just looks weird huhuhuuhmmm ...:)

      thanks for the comment :)

thank you both for taking the time to say something about em :)

    5. If you like the look of buttons but can't make buttonholes, use snaps. Sew the button on where you want it, and then put a snap closure underneath the button. I learned a lot about sewing by looking at sewing/pattern magazines. Keep it up. The more you sew, you will create your own shortcuts and techniques.

    6. Practice makes perfect and looks like you are on the right tract. Keep up the good work!

    7. the coat is amazing, it looks like the slit might need a good press though, just to crisp up the lines.

snaps are wonderful, because you don't need to cut button holes, you might call them press studs
but i like the button details, normally when we make tiny clothes we put the buttons as details so the idea that it actually buttons is wonderful.

    8. Carol in CT:
Yes I guess until I get the button hole done correctly, thats what Ill be doing for a while :) Yes, I agree, the more you do something the more you'd figure out shortcuts and ways of doing things better :)..

I guess I do need to look for some of those... sewing and pattern magazines...

      thanks for the comment :)

      Joegirl:
Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

      Seraphim:
I bought this tiny iron for that purpose, but in the case of the coat, I am somewhat not sure if it would be ok to iron that fabric. like I said im not really sure about a lot of things in sewing, more so on fabrics, and Ive read somewhere that there are certain types of fabric that are not really adviseable to iron... and I just dont know if this is one of em.. I even forgot what the fabric is called... all that i can remember is the moleskin thing attacked to the name...

somehow I want to be able to make it like in the human clothes... I mean having the real button holes... someday that is... :) but for now snap ons it shall be :)...

thanks for the comments seraphim :)

    9. The coat looks real good. One of the most important thing when sewing is proper pressing of the seams as you are making the garment, it makes a world of difference.

    10. I like very much your latest one!

    11. ironing and pressing aren't quite the same thing,
to press (this is so handy for delicate things, embroideries, fabrics your iron will eat given a chance,) and much easier for doll clothes
take a CLEAN tea towel (I've seen people miss this) and spray it with water until it's damp, now lay the item you want to press on the ironing board, then the tea towel flat, and iron through the tea towel,
some people use a piece of thick fleece, which works just as well,

    12. Dominique:
      Thanks for the comments :)

      Marip:
You too, thanks for saying something :)

      Seraphim and Dominique about pressing:
alright I got it... thank you both for the pressing idea suggestion.

Seraphim, I think Ive seen some fleece at joanns, I think ill try that for now.. uhmmm damp fleece I guess, I dont know where to get tea cloth for now. You know what, I might actually get it later today, I think im gonna look for some plain cotton fabrics. I dont know why but, how come I dont see any of those in joanns, I mean the plain white for shirts, how come they dont sell em... or im just not looking hard enough :(

Im just a bit annoyed, I cant sew coz my right wrist has been hurting like hell. It feels a bit better now but it still hurts, I think its been days already I wonder whats up with it.

    13. for days ive been trying to make shorts and i just kept on failing again and again. What i really wanted to make are pants but i thought making shorts would be better for now to save on the fabric and stitch time as well.

after 5 miserable attempts and wasting all of that fabric, here's the... 6th... it still looks a bit wrong .. but it fits her... it doesnt use elastics and it closes with snap ons.

she's been nagging me in a way about it for quite a while now... well im just glad ive managed to make one that she can uhmm really just wear... i'll try to improve it some other time...

i think this will be the last piece of clothing that ill make using that fabric... its really just.. done for...

for now i think im gonna start working on the dress that i really wanted to make for her.. so i guess i wont be making her stuff for a while...

    14. Wow--this is by hand?! O_O They're so good! I really love the coat...but I wish the buttons were even. They're a little bit off, and the scale makes it look weird (an eigth of an inch off on a human jacket is less noticable than for someone who is only 60 cm.)

Pants are a pain to make. Those don't look too bad, frankly. Did you use a pattern? James's Jeans may work pretty well. :) http://www.denofangels.com/patterns/james/jeans. The skull fabric is cute, but I'm not sure if it would work for pants...they look like pajamas. Maybe you should pick up some thicker material next time you're at JoAnn's? Or cut up some old jeans?

Still, very beautiful work. And jaw-droppingly amazing for hand sewing. ^_^

    15. I'm bad sewing :( but I really like your coat and pirate stuff.
      Cute :)

    16. the94clouds:
yeah I only sew by hand :(... yes the buttons really were uneven too huhuhhuhmmmm :) thanks for noticing though... but... you mentioned something about the scale of something... what exactly were you referring to? the buttons or the coat itself or uhmm what?... as for the buttons Ireally have no options as of the moment I... i just cant find any tiny buttons that would look nice on it :(... well the thing is about the coat is that I will remake another one later when ive improved... fix mistakes that i did on this one and maybe even add some more stuff to it to make it look nicer... actually im planning on redoing all of my previous works...

honestly im not really sure what a pattern is technically... uhmmm... i make my own i think?... i make em on stock paper and trace them on the fabric after ive cut them... so... if thats a pattern then i guess im using em... i really have no clue about a lot of sewing terms so... bear with me...

i checked the pants link... Im not really sure how to use it since there are no uhmmmm... measurements of.. things.... .. uhmmm.. but the curves are helpful.. I think i can manage to make good use of this info...

as for the skull pattern... that fabric has been exhausted already... so thats probably the last thing ill make with it... it was just a training fabric... something really cheap.. I just wanted to make sure it would fit i mean i dont want to use expensive materials and then well.. they would just go to waste coz they dont fit... so uhmmm until i really know what id be doing i think im gonna stick to $2 or 3/yard fabrics :)

thanks for the compliment... i hope i can improve on the hand sewing though...

      D4no0ntje:

uhuhuhmmm well :)... thanks for the compliment... ive never really thought about that.. i mean the pirate stuff... i thought it was a horror themed print... :( .... ... argh now i want to find some more of it for later use ....

well i sucked at sewing as can be seen on my very first one... but as they say.. sewing just takes patience i guess :).. so if you really want to get better you just have to practice and try things i guess :)

    17. Wow. Just wow. I tried handstitching for 6inch dolls and gave up due to lack of patience. And you're stitches are really good too! ((my things are easy to see what's handstitched, mostly because the fabric gets uneven pulls from it x.x ))

I agree with lovelovekitty, the fabric of the first two isn't so great as far as how it makes the clothes look, but the rest are wonderful! ((I'd totally die if I had to handsew that much!))

I think my fave is the third shirt pictured. I might try to sew something like that sometime if that's alright ^^

    18. I just meant that the buttons on the black coat looked a bit lopsided, and it's harder to get away with that sort of thing on doll clothes than human clothes, because of the size difference. Sorry about not being clearer on that. :sweat

      ~:arainclou

    19. I wont be sewing for a while :(... im being over-whelmed by work and school and other stuff right now :(... arghhhhh....

      Nana:
      Thanks for commenting...

well about the patience part... doing things by hand can be really time consuming... especially if you really want to make it look really nice. someone told me that pressing the fabric before stitching helps a lot; maybe you can try it too :) ill be trying that on my next one which wouldnt be anytime soon... :(

as for the blue fabric.. some people love it and some dont :)... but somehow i think im not doing the fabric any justice by my poor sewing skills so... :(... maybe "I'm" the factor that makes it look uhmmm... you know...

as for the third one... honestly... im not really sure what its called...

      the94cloud:
oh ok :)... but yeah yer right about that... i mean 5cm can mean a LOT when it comes to certain areas and this would be nothing for human clothes... yeah.. its harder to get away with em too.. i guess in a way its a bit harder to make clothes for the little ones compared to those worn by humans...

    20. You're welcome ^^

      Yeah, I used to sew by hand. 6 inch doll kimono to be exact. It killed any patience that I had left. XD; I might try pressing my fabric before sewing next time. Might. I do have a bad habit of ironing in wrinkles though hehehe ^^;

"by my poor sewing skills" No way. You've got great sewing skills! Don't be so modest, at least admit that you're good!

      Well, whatever it's called, it's cool! ^_____^

    21. Looks to me as if you're doing really well, and to sew them all by hand too!

I was amazed at your latter attempts, you've shown good progression already. Well done!!

      :)

    22. You have done so many great things! I love the shorts, i think they look good on. Ive also tried pants but failed >_< I look forward to see more from you! :D

    23. nana:
huuhhmmm im having some difficulties with the ironing part too in a way... often, the fabric would move and then it would get ironed out the wrong way and.. arghhh...

ive been wanting to make a kimono too... but i guess that one wil have to wait a bit longer... i mean i think id like to really understand and get better with what ive been working on for now before moving on to another type of clothing...

well... as I always say... if you think its good then I guess it IS good... and it would be rude to say otherwise... so thank you nana :)...

well for now i cant sew... my right hand is weirdly hurt again... its significantly much worse now... i just woke up with it and darn... so for now ill just try to come up with my next work during my free time i guess... :)...

      dambuster:
thanks for the compliment :)... sometimes you know... like in all artists or... its harder when people are complimenting you a lot in a sense that at times I guess you'd.. be a bit.. conscious that your next work should be a bit better or something so as not to disappoint people or something... uhuhummm but im not an artist so hahahahha.... well... more nonsense talk from me again... sorry...

      sweetiemi:

i think ill be trying to recreate the first ones for now... ill try to make em cleaner on the inside and try out some new things on them and see if there would be some difference at all... well im still a bit uncertain about the sleeves... i hope my next attempt on those would work this time...

well i tried tons before i was able to make that shorts huhuhummm... some things are really just hard to make arghhhhh and to think how much i take those for granted.. the shorts i mean huhuhumphh....

    24. Do you hold the fabric down when ironing it? That might help. Well, when all else fails for me, I run to my Mom XD Because at my house she's the ironing queen! :3

Getting really good with what you're doing now before moving on is a good idea ^^ When I started sewing stuff I sew shirts, pants, and kimono without really taking the time to get good at any of them individually before moving on, which made for slow progress at getting better.

      You're welcome ^____^

That's not good. I used to get my hands cramped really easily and really badly. And then I went through this bout with carpel tunnel in my thumb *shudder* That was bad. Well, I hope your hand feels better soon!

    25. :D Wow that coat is aswome, you said it was a patterin from vouge? did you scale it down to fit her?

    26. Nana:
uhmmm... y... yeah i hold it down on the left side while I iron with my right???.. well I cant really rely on my mom on anything concerning anything related to my little one... :(

as for my arm its.. back again and its much severe it even hurting when i not moving it at alllll... i.. im just.. is it arthritis???? it cant be right??? i mean I just lied down the wrong way?... or something... or maybe it got worse because i used it to carry some stuff yesterday though it still hurt?... arghhh

well i made a silly photostory about it... im not sure if i should... post it here though... its well... uhmm... hmmmmm...

      edit:
alright i posted it anyway... here's the link:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147008

      lethaldose:
uhmmm i just erhm... saw a picture of the coat in vogue... and uhm.. made my own???

well thanks for the comment :)

    27. The coat is so beautiful!

      It looks really professional!

    28. thanks a lot getsukodomo :)...

    29. I think this looks good :D It's really cool to see how your skill improves with every piece. I think that coat looks awesome, and I love that pirate stuff ^^

    30. That black jacket, could you make one for me? I'd love to buy it from you. I'm waiting on my doll and I think that would look soooo cute on him.

    31. Wow, those pirate patterned shirts are absolutely beautiful (especially the first one). :fangirl: That jacket is amazing as well.
Do you think you would ever offer patterns for those shirts?

Keep up the amazing work! :aheartbea I hope your arm feels better soon.

    32. The things you made with the pirate patterned fabric is great!! :love
And I also like your other work!

    33. =] Have you finished Hikari's dress you were working on a long time back?

    34. do you have patterns for the shirts?

    35. Wow these are really good! I'd love to be able to make this quality of clothing, and handsewn too! Go you.

As for your wrist, I would go to the doctor. It sounds like RSI from all the handsewing you do and if you leave it, it will get worse.

*is wearing a fugly RSI glove and cringing as he types* It's not fun, trust me.

      Be well

    36. I love them! What a great job especially for hand sewing. My first thought on the first 2 shirts was that the fabric would be great for a doll sized set of nurse scrubs. :) I have some pretty crazy prints for the ones I use. You could make a simple pair of pants in a solid dark blue and a matching scrub cap in the ocean fabric. :)
