Aesthetics My second faceup

May 12, 2017

    1. This is my second full/complete faceup on a doll (Miadoll Baby Soo), and I'm really keen to improve quickly so any critique or tips would be much appreciated! <3
Right now, I can see that I really need better brushes for line work as mine is clumpy (and I'm using crappy cut down brushes haha)…a good friend has given me some brush recommendations so if anyone else has any (I'm in the EU/UK) that would be wonderful, as I'd love to try different kinds.

Thank you for your time, everyone!

    2. I really like the eyebrows, they look nice and natural!. As for brushes, these ones are very good - [IMG]
They're are currently being sold Poundland and someone else mentioned that Superdrug was selling them (look in the cosmetics / nail care section).

    3. @Epicari , those are the ones I have! Though…I found that after one use, they sort of fuzzed up and lost shape after I cleaned them. I put it down to them being very cheap. Did you not have that problem with them?

    4. Wow!!! That's a really nice faceup style! The realistic blushing is sooo nice, I like her a lot!

If I had to find a criticism, it looks like the pastels got kind of "blurry" in certain areas. Do you have a kneaded eraser? I find it really useful around areas like the lips and eyebrows to make a defined line. But seriously, excellent job.

    5. I think it looks really good! My only critique would be the bottom lashes look sort of clumpy and not as soft as the rest of the face-up. Like you mentioned however it might be the brushes fault.

      Awesome job overall!

    6. Here's a list of some brushes. :)

I'd definitely recommend the Princeton 3050 line, and Princeton Select line. :) I've used a whole lot of stuff over the years, and they are my favorite brushes to date. :D They are a little pricey, but the mid-range priced brushes from most companies are more than sufficient.

I think testing out a few smaller brushes will really help tidy up your linework.

    7. It looks great! The blushing is really nice and natural. Really, the eyelashes are the only problem and even so they look pretty good. It could be that your brushes are not the problem, but the paint. Did you thin it with anything? Thinning with water doesn't give great results (though still better than using paint straight out of the tube, heh), so I recommend you get some actual acrylic paint thinner. If you did use some, maybe you didn't use enough? This video demonstrates what the paint viscosity should be like.

    8. @overlordu thank you ;u; yeah, I experimented with both water and Tamiya thinner. Thank you very much for the video, that should help me a lot.

    9. I've not had that problem so far and i've used the brushes a number of times. What paint are you using and what's your cleaning method? I've found acrylic paint is really tough on brushes so proper cleaning is essential. I clean mine with this brush cleaner (regular soap and water isn't enough to remove acrylic). You need to pay extra attention to where the bristles meets the ferrule as that area can easily get clogged with dried paint and cause the bristles to splay out. After cleaning, brushes should be hung up to dry with bristles pointing downwards, as the glue on cheaper brushes tends to water soluble.
Paint-wise, I use Vallejo model colour acrylic as it's nice and fluid (the tube stuff is far too thick and rough). Also when I need to mix the paint, I use old/cheap brushes to do that to avoid damaging my nice brushes ^^
