After over three months of waiting, USPS has officially declared my package to Spain as "lost." I filed a claim over two months ago, asking them to find it, and it was ignored until I called them last week. (They openly admitted that no one had even looked at the case.) Instead of trying to look for it, they just immediately declared it lost. Has anyone else been in this situation? Can I open another claim and ask them to at least look for my package? What are my options? USPS has been very unhelpful and evasive.
Were you sending something you sold or sending a doll for customizing? Did you have insurance for the full value?
I sold a doll. Unfortunately, the package was insured for $18 as opposed to the full value ($80) due to an error on the postal worker's part. I just learned that when I went to file the claim.
You can make a claim for the $18, although it wouldn't be worth the effort required for me, personally. You owe the buyer a refund, and it would be better for you to do it yourself rather than make the buyer pursue a claim through their Paypal buyer protection, assuming that's how they paid. Your only protection was the insurance. Spain is one of the countries that I will not ship to, as their postal service is notorious for lost/stolen parcels. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way, and with the insurance error to boot, but at least you weren't shipping a $1000 full set!
What a mess, the insurance error just happened to be on one that was lost. If you used PayPal goods and services they might be able to help, but it’s not a sure thing. I have heard of people showing PayPal proof of shipping and a lost parcel and PayPal refunded the buyer without deducting it from their funds but I don’t know how common that is. If PayPal is not involved make the claim for the $18 because I think it covers what you paid in shipping too, it’s better than nothing.
Thanks for the advice. The buyer has asked to not be refunded, as she still believes that the package will still show up, but I'm definitely going to consider doing it myself. I didn't know that about Spain! I had an issue like this once when I shipped there over a year ago but it finally showed up after months of being "in transit." The unfortunate thing is that it was a one-off Volks head so it was OOAK. I'll contact PayPal next then! Thank you!
Oh hey! Updating this thread with some good news. The package arrived in Spain almost three months after I shipped it. All is well. The final straw was getting my mother involved. That woman has an amazing power over customer service people. Next steps are to hopefully get refunds for shipping/postage fees.
