Hi! Quick question: I ordered a doll recently from Ringdoll directly by email, where I confirmed my full Legal Name to them when they requested it. However, when my order confirmation was placed finally, it was placed under a Nickname from my email address and not my Legal Name in the order screenshot they provided me. Like putting my first name as “Chris” instead of “Christopher”, as a quick example. I’ve reached out to them directly regarding correction, but haven’t gotten a response yet. I was just wondering if this was something that I should be concerned with in the future or if I’m contacting over a non-issue? I know they use DHL and my order is going to be a very long time out, but I just want to make sure there isn’t any issues when it’s ready to ship. Thanks to anyone who can provide me some clarity
You should probably note what country you're in... I've had packages shipped to me overseas with just my first nickname or just initials. No one seems to check unless there's an issue. I may have had to show my ID once to pick up a package at the post office when they couldn't manage to leave me a note at my door. That was 10 years ago so my memory may be untrustworthy on that.
I've made quite a few orders from doll companies under my (much preferred) nickname instead of my legal name. Never had any issues. Never ordered from Ringdoll, however, so no experience with them specifically. The only issue I can possibly see for things is will you be able to prove that the person receiving the item is you in the event of, say, customs/post needs the addressed person to pick up/sign for the package? Honestly, it's pretty common for people to use their nickname on everything. And I mean everything. I work for my county government and see people putting their nicknames on legal forms all the time actually.
Yeah, I have proofs of address and the like, it’s just not ideal to have to jump through hoops and I worry about delays in delivery. I prefer it to be as smooth as possible and not worry my package may not deliver right if it gets sent. It’s such an expensive package and my very first BJD that I want to make sure nothing happens.
I guess the most important thing would be whether or not the name on your shipping address is correct? Does the order confirmation show your shipping address? It's common for orders to be put under a username/nickname (you've picked when making an account) if you placed an order through an account made on a doll company site after all. Not sure about orders placed through email. As long as the name on the actual shipping address is correct, it should be fine.
If you're in the US or UK, it shouldn't be a problem; I've received packages addressed to just Sof (not even similar to my legal name, but my nickname online), and have used preferred names to send packages to friends in the UK as well as elsewhere in the US. I couldn't give actual facts about other countries, but for something as close or common as Chris/Christopher, I'd think you're probably fine since it'd be easily identifiable.
I’m in the US. That’s comforting enough, it’s my first BJD and it was well over $1k so I guess maybe I’ve been a little nervous over nothing. I just worry as well about being a pester reaching out to them about that sort of thing.
If you have received mail to that name you shouldn't run into any issue at all. If you miss the delivery window and they need you to pick it up for some reason. As someone who goes primarily by a nickname, I can say all the postal services I've used in the US don't typically care if it doesn't match the name on your ID, as long as it's similar enough to your first or middle name. They get it. DHL has also let me sign for other people's packages without checking my ID It's okay to be nervous about your doll arriving. It's a big ticket item.
You should be OK. The US doesn't charge import duties/customs/tariffs on BJDs, which are classified as toys. I find that not using the full legal name becomes an issue when shipping to countries that do charge customs/tariffs, because it's a tax thing. They need to know the correct name so they know who to charge for the import tax. This can be frustrating for the recipient, especially if they have adopted a new name or don't want to disclose their birth name, but I have had to insist.
I'd assume Ringdoll is still going to check with you if your address details are correct before sending your order out once it's ready. Do pester them about it if you're not sure or want your legal name on the order confirmation. I guess it's been established that it's fine in the US to have a nickname on the box but for anyone in EU - I've not been able to collect my parcel before because my last name had been misspelled by the sender, it's definitely crucial to have it down on this side of the ocean.
If it's over $1000 the US does charge customs fees. $1k is the cutoff for the amount a package can be before they charge customs fees, so it will depend on if the full value is declared on the labels. It's been an issue at my last job where a seller incorrectly labeled the value of a shipment.
In the case I need to pay customs or tariffs, how would I go about that then? Do I receive a notification that it applies? I’ve never had anything shipped that costs me tariffs or customs fees and the doll did cost me over 1k.
When it happened at my job, the delivery company left an invoice for it. You'll want to make sure to check your phone if you get a call around the time it's being delivered in case they call you, but they might also bring an invoice when they deliver it, or they'll let you know you need to come to a shipping center near you to pay it before they'll release the package. When I ordered from Ringdoll directly, my package came from FedEx, so you could also create a FedEx delivery management account and monitor it there. UPS has something similar, but I'm not sure about DHL. You won't get a notification from Ringdoll about it because they have no control over that.
I see, that tracks. When you ordered your Ringdoll, was it also over 1k that you had to pay customs too? I’ll have to be on the lookout for phone calls then to make sure. I just wonder why Ringdoll has stopped responding to me. Before I paid I was getting 24 hour turnaround time responses from their email, now they haven’t said anything about my inquiry. Maybe they’ve gotten more busy?
BJDs still fall under the "toys" category, which is not taxed, no matter the value of the package. If your previous job had a package that was "toys" and received a customs bill, that means the seller chose the wrong classification and/or customs misread, so they could've gone to the appropriate office to contest it. However, I have heard stories of DHL adding their own fees separate from customs.
Not sure if applicable in the US but DHL adds a "handling fee" to imports outside of EU. It's ~€6 and not tied to customs nor the value of the parcel, though.
That's what it's called, a "handling fee". I've heard some folks on here who are in the US buying from Asian countries getting this fee added onto their packages. It's a DHL thing and definitely sounds annoying, as it's completely separate from customs. And the thing is they send this bill months after the delivery has been made. I think some folks were getting charged like $30+ fee for a $20 item.
In the US it also makes a difference if you are a business importing merchandise, or an individual buying personal items via e-commerce. That could also be a reason why your work got charged customs fees? For personal items, the cases where an individual has to pay customs are very specific to things such as alcohol, animals, foods and so on, and some specific item quotas by country. If it's under 2500 and personal use item, it usually can fall under informal entry and go through customs without a hassle. So a single doll shouldn't raise any flags or fees if labelled correctly.
No my order was about $800 so I didn't have to pay customs. They might have gotten busier; which email did you send your inquiry too? They have a couple different ones and one is basically for their paypal and similar transactions, so if it went to that one it's possible they haven't seen it.
They do list on their website that response times could be anywhere from 2-10 days depending on if you're asking before or after making a purchase, longer for after a purchase has been made, so I wouldn't worry quite yet.
I had sent my first one to cherry@ringdoll, but then I got confused and maybe thought that one wasn’t the right one, so I then reached back out to sales@ringdoll where I got my original confirmation.
I think you might want to contact [email protected]. This is how they list the addresses in their buying guide: Our contact email: For pre-purchase consulting : [email protected] For sales service: [email protected]
