Actually...only the head, I made the body about a month ago~ This's my first post, so I guess I should list her info. Unamed (I am not good at naming... ) height: 38cm clay: wood clay eyes: self made colour: arcrylic, soft pastel, sculpy glaze dress: made by my mom (hahaha~I am going to find photos of her body and add them here) wig: I bought it... working time period: one week what else...hm...nothing else in my mind yet, ok, here she is
She's awesome. I love those eyes. You made them yourself? How did you get them to look so real? I have been trying to make eyes like that with no luck. Michelle
I am glad that you like her. Yes I made the eyes but unfortunatly they don't last long, not sure exactlly how long...the transparent part would become opaque... The materials were just oven bakeable sculpy and transparent panting media.
That sucks that they will become opaque. To get the gloss transparent part you should try eberhardfaber gloss lacquer, I think it is the same company that makes FIMO polymer clay. For my next pair of eyes I am gonna try layering it and see what happens. If you try to put it on too thick it creates air bubbles but if you put it on thin and let it dry between layers it looks like clear nail polish. I use it for eyes I have made on sculptures, I just haven't perfected making the pupil part yet. Michelle
Thank you Michelle, it's great to know a new media to make eyes, and a good way to aviod bubbles~ Lacquer...so the eyes you made with it never had any change eh?
what's the name of the wood clay? is it hard to work with? did you use noah's method or was it actually sculpted?
hm...I shouldn't have said "wood clay," it's a North American bbs and I tell the brand people would actually know...haha...too used to Chinese bbs. Well, it's this one: It has many colours, I used the one in the picture, and mixed it with a little left over "La DOll" clay. Adding that little other clay doesn't make big change from the pure "PLUS." It's easy to work on. To me, it's harder than sculpy but much easier and cleanner than pot clay. And it drys fast, a 1/4 head totally dries in a day. If it gets dry while working, just add water. I personally love it. ^^ I am not sure what you mean by "noah's method," but I was working adding clay but not taking out clay to form the shape. I made the base using this... (what's this called...damn...they are green/brown blocks people use to hold flowers in a busket or something like that), and then I simply wrap the clay on, and take the base out after the clay's dried. Hope the above makes sence...^^o
They carry that clay here and it is really cheap, I may have to try it. http://polymerclayexpress.com/airdryclays.html
No, it has been months and it never turned opaque, still clear and shiny like nail polish. Some people also use clear nail polish that is used for acrylic nails and they don't have problems.
We call one of them simply an oasis, don't know if that's the actual name She's a lovely girl! She looks so professionally done and her eyes really shine.
And I bought mine at LOOMIS art supply store, but they don't seem carry this colour now...weird...I tried the white one, but felt that not only the colour is different, but also the actual clay, while the store person said that colour should be the only thing that's different. I think the colour in the picture is easier to work with.
Forgot to ask, it should be totally transparent (but not kinda yellowish) right? I think so, but just didn't find any at OPUS yesterday...where did you buy it? Thank you.
>>EveningShade, Oasis? hahaha~interesting name. Thank you for liking her.^^ >>Rei0, ya, should be, florists foam shounds more like it. Thanks~ >>illyrimur & I_love_EL, Thank you guys! >w< ya, it cost me a lot of practise. There were about 10 heads before her...haha~
Yes it should be totally transparent. I got mine at Joann or Prizm art supply. Here is a link with a pic so you can see it. I don't know where you are at so I don't know if you have the same art supply stores. You can also use liquid glass clear nail polish because it works with polymer. http://store.fimousa.com/glueslaquers.html
>>msteeleart, I c i c~=D I checked out two art supply stores, they don't carry it, gonna check hardware store tomorrow~^^ >>I_love_EL, Thanks again!! >v< haha~so happy, I love her too~
Sorry, you can't find it. If I were you I would go to the grocery store and get some clear liquid nail polish which is for fake nails, it should work the same. Or you could order it online. Michelle
Hi again Michelle, I went to see nail polish today, but didn't buy any... -Are they kinda like water and can move fastly but not like shampoo (which moves slower and looks denser?) -And is lacquer about the same as nail polish? If they are so "sparse" I don't know how to use them, coz what I used was almost gel like... -Last question, what do you use to make the white part of the eyes? Thank you! Sorry about asking one small question at a time...
Clear nail polish is about the consistency of laquer. It feels gooey if you touch it. The nail polish comes with a brush so just brush it over the eye and let it dry in between layers. It usually takes about 5 minutes for it to dry depending on the thickness. For the white part I use white cernit polymer clay because it actually looks like the whites of human eyes when it is cooked. You can order cernit from http://polymerclayexpress.com/cernit.html. I never see it carried in the stores around here. If you want you can also mix transculent fimo with white fimo to get a similar effect or even sculpey III. The cernit has a bit of translucency to it that makes it look kind of porcelain. The only thing I hate about cernit is that when you work with it the clay gets like marshmallows and sticky so it is kind of hard to work with. I sand it a little bit after I bake it so it is rounder and has a flat side to stick the colored part of it to. If I get ambitious, I will make some eyes this weekend and photograph the process. Michelle
Thank you once again Michelle ("Thank you Powerpuff girl! once again, the world is saved"... hahaha~)! It's so detailed~ I can imagine how the white part looks like, but still not sure how the eyeballs you make look like~ If you have already made some, did you take photos of them?
I will make some this weekend and take some pics. I worked on some the other night but I put the fimo laquer on too thick and touch them too soon. I have a real hard time letting them dry because I want to touch them. I have been trying to perfect making eyes for a long time. Michelle
I made 4 of them. I just have to get pictures. I put a couple in a doll ahead I sculpted to show how they look. It was supposed to be a ball joint doll but when I cut off the head cap it cracked everywhere so I must start over. Hopefully I will get the pics up later today. It's been taking forever because I have been coating the eyeballs with the laquer in between drying times. Michelle
it cracked...you mean the doll head? sounds terrible...><。 hope everyting will be fine~Good luck! Jean
Here are some pics. I never sanded and fixed the doll head's eyes so they look kind of crappy. The second set of eyes have air bubbles because I applied the FIMO laquer too thick at one time. I still have not perfected making perfect circles on the eyes and I need to make a mold so the clay eyeballs are perfectly round. And yes, the doll head cracked.
I am so sorry to hear that the doll head was cracked...but the head in the picture is so pretty. Did you make it yourself? And the white ball, the colour looks very vivid, and the shape-how did you make it so perfect? Now I see how you applied FIMO laquer on it to make the transparent part. somehow mine is a little different: I think the thicker the transparent part is, the prittier the eyeball would be, so I made the round part on the white ball hollow (although I can't make it a sphear, but only half of it =P). Maybe this's why I need medium with higher consistency. However, the medium I used didn't work...and maybe pure white sculpy(I used to make the white part) isn't good either... Thank you very much Michelle! I appreciate it~
I think yours look very cool. What medium did you use for the lense? Is that transculent sculpey? I have been trying to make a thicker lense but it is very hard. Did you paint the colored part? I like the way your eyeballs look. The shape of the white doesn't really matter. I did make the doll head but I will cut the head cap off with a saw rather then an exacto knife next time. The exacto doesn't do a very good job and it makes the sculpey crack. I make the round shape by rolling it in my fingers and then sanding it after it is baked.
Ya...It's called the lens...sigh...^^o well the lens is made of self leveling gel for painting~it's like transparent acrylic? yes I painted the coloured part, and you too right? the lens's too thick...very easy to get translucent...sigh... What a pity...do you have a mold or something for the doll head? gotta make a new one eh?...although I think if I were you, I woudn't use sculpy to make heads, it's really easy to crack~in this sense, clay works better~
Thanks, I will have to try that. I did a search on self leveling gels and I came up with Golden self leveling gel. On the golden page it says that the gloss self level gel will stay glossy and luminance. Did you use the Golden gel? If you did, was it the gloss gel or matte? They say on that page that the gloss will stay clear like glass. Here's the link: http://www.goldenpaints.com/artist/gels.php Sorry to drive you nuts about these eyes but I have been trying to figure out how to make my own eyes for so long.
It will stay glossy?= = No I didn't use this...maybe...actually I donno the brand I am using right now...but it's gloss, matte is like translucent. No apologize~I need to thank you about the white part~ Maybe I should go see weather golden looks the same as mine, if not I'll try it. Wee both good luck~
