My Kitty BJD Attempt

Apr 7, 2013

    1. As a practice of constructing a BJD, I have started my own kitty BJD. At first, I was thinking of joint parts too much and was not going anywhere, but My friend and mentor, Sailor suggested me to sculpt a figure first and work on joint afterward. Since I am new at this, figured I would make a simpler BJD

But this is what I end up sculpting. I am gonna work from here.

    2. I was just about to write and ask how your kitty BJD was shaping up! You are a much faster sculptor than I am (perhaps I should switch to castiline-- apoxie sculpt takes forever to cure.) It looks like you've come up with a couple ways of splitting up the body and jointing it, have you decided where to go from here yet? The sculpt looks nice and versatile. I actually really like the sculptorly texture on the surface, though I am sure it will look just as good when it's all polished.

LOL @ 'I got no body'

definitely let me know if you need advice on where to cut and how to make the joints themselves! you can probably figure it out on your own (being an excellent and resourceful sculptor already) but as someone who started with solid figures too, I know seeing your sculpt in pieces can be intimidating...

    3. Thanks for the comment and kind words, Sailor!
Yeah, once you get used to it, modeling wax can be pretty fast. I can probably give you some tips on it if you really switch. But I must admit that I like the fact that many of your work is one of the kind art work.

As for the cutting, I would at least like to achieve a sitting pose without looking awkward. So two joints on limbs, a joint at the neck and one in the body? I have no idea what I am gonna do with the tail...
Of course I will need your help, Sailor. I am counting on you ^_^

      Ma model

    4. I cut the kitty up and played with the body little while and this is what I got so far. I will need advice/suggestion on articulation from members, for sure.

      Just documenting my progress.

I am planning to put more joints on him but like to go slow on this one since I am new to ball jointed figures.

      Thanks for looking!

    5. Daring kitty! You're not only fast, but good! The joints look good so far, but you might not get much mobility in the leg and neck joints without cutting away more of the socket on the body. Are you going to make a junk cast so you can string him up and test his posing?

    6. Thank, Alewife!! I am planning to install joints on each limbs and play with it. I probably cut away more like you suggested.

Hehe I sculpted him in modeling wax so I don't need to cast any parts to test articulation. Nice thing about wax. I might replace the paws with epoxy materiel so that it can withstand the stress of hardware and elastics better.

      Thanks for the compliment!!

    7. Adorable!! Love the kitty!!

    8. Thanks, BBG This guy is on a back burner now since I am making the 1/4 scale bjd. Wish finished this guy so that I have more experience on engineering ball joint parts of dollies....

    9. I found this :) !!! Please do continue!
