20–39cm Dolls My first work : Khyb !

Jul 11, 2019

    1. Hey all!

I’ve started this doll…. well, one year ago, almost day for day! At first, I didn’t even know that much about ball jointed dolls, and was mostly playing around with clay… But I ended up with a face that I liked; at the same time, I started discovering many artists on Instagram, and suddenly I knew: I needed to make my own doll! (And buy other dolls too when I have money lol)

But enough about me, let’s introduce the doll, Khyb !

Their name is Khyb! They are about 33 cm and have a faceplate system. While the body is pretty soft looking, I see them as non-binary. So, I use both gender-neutral and female pronouns. I do plan on making a torso piece without any breasts, too.

For now, only the faceplate is in its finishing stages, the eyelids and inside still needing more work (But I’m starting to think the lips aren’t defined enough, and I plan on making several different places in the future). I’m currently slimming down the shoulders because I thought they were too broad, and I’m working on the hip joint to make them wider. I didn’t make a blueprint and the payback is hitting hard! :doh

Since it is my first doll, I want to make the jointing relatively simple, only adding the double joints at the elbows and maybe knees.

It’s a pretty slow process, but I hope to make some significant progress this august on them! I would like to have a working prototype by the end of the year, and a finished doll by mid to late 2020. So I havo to get to it !

And since the faceplate is nearly finished, I had fun making rough casts and customizing them!

    3. Thank you! I ended up not touching her all summer and only started working on her two days ago :doh but at least it gave me the opportunity to see what I wanted to do with her and I made a bit of progress \o/

    4. Well, after half a year I come back here!
I spent a few months being quite dissatisfied with her looks and was making very little to none progress. And I even feared I would start getting bored with this project!
But today I worked on her a bit more and felt happy with what I did! :dance
      So here's what changed :

(I'm having trouble making the image show so I'm linking it too, just in case)

I shaved down her shoulders down quiiiite a bit, realized the leg joints were absolutely not spherical so I had to redo them, which took me AGES (they're still not perfect spheres, but for now that's good enough), and I reshaped the torso in general.
Also, resin molds make for nice joints! And I had the perfect size for my shoulder joints, which is pretty convenient :XD:

I also added a touch of epoxy to the nose to make it more symmetrical.
Man, symmetry sure is my nemesis! I'm really considering making the limbs, hands, and feet on the computer now... We'll see!

All in all, I know didn't make much progress. But i'm getting there !
