My first Resin BJD

Dec 4, 2012

    1. I currently make porcelain BJD's but have been toying with the idea of making a resin BJD for quite some time and now I finally am going to do it. I will sculpt a new doll and have it cast for me at a casting house. I'm familiar with sculpting a BJD and molding it in plaster, but sculpting and having it cast in resin is completely foreign to me. I would like to show my WIP here and I have many questions. So PLEASE if I'm doing something wrong tell me, I don't know if sculpting for silcone molds will be the same.

Here is my working drawing that I will be using. I took a working drawing that I previously drew and shrunk it on a photo copier.

    2. I will be using polymer clay to build my model.

    3. Best wishes for success with your first resin BJD, Allison.
That drawing looks really nice. How tall will your resin doll be?

      (^_^)

    4. I changed my mind and decided to work with La Doll air dry clay. This is my first time working with air dry clay, so I have to go about my sculpting process in a different way. So far, I'm loving the change from polymer. Here's what I have so far....

    5. I also recently switched to LaDoll and I am really beginning to like it a lot more over polymer clay...both have their benefits though. So far your progress is looking good!

    6. Thanks! My drawing is 14" so that's what I'm shooting for.

I'm really loving it, and I thought I would never switch from polymer.

    7. I started building up the legs. I'm going to let it dry before I continue. I used drinking straws to keep them hollow.

    9. very nice !! more pictures pleeease !! ^^

    10. Thank you and I'll post some more pictures when I get further along.

    11. looking good

    12. It has been alot of sanding, cleaning and readjusting trying to get everything perfect. Next I will cut the legs and add joints to the knees. Normally I work with polymer clay but I switched to La Doll for this prototype. Although I am loving my new medium, I still am figuring out the best ways of working with it. The fundamentals of sculpting are the same but it definitly is completely a different medium to work with.

    13. thats incredible! o: it looks soo nice for your first bjd, especially working with a new medium, i have not tried paper clay before

    14. I have sculpted a few master dolls that i molded then cast in porcelain, but they were out of polymer clay. This is my first time sculpting a doll to cast in resin and using La Doll. Sorry if I had not made myself clear. Thank you!

    15. This is really coming out beautifully. She looks so polished and smooth. :)

I've been using polymer for a while and finding some of the limitations to be really frustrating. and was considering making my next doll with La Doll. I'm interested to see how you find building the joints with the new medium.
