~20cm Dolls My first humanoid doll!

Jun 11, 2020

    1. This is going to be my second doll. I planned to make a doll named “clover”, but for some reason I wasn’t into the design. My biggest mistake is that I’m not using a blueprint, so feel free to learn from me:sweat. I am using DAS clay and fimo clay for this doll, unlike my doll Water for which I used sculpey. So far, I have made the upper arms, the lower arms, the hands, the upper torso and the lower torso.

    2. Working without a blueprint is absolutely fine! It may cause some extra work along the way, but if you are not counting the hours and just sculpt for the fun of it, letting a project grow on it's own -unrestricted by a solid plan- can be very rewarding in it's own right. :)

What are your plans for this doll?

    3. Thanks for letting me know:)! I plan to cast this doll myself, since I want to practice that. I am really looking forward to giving them a faceup! ///ˆvˆ///

    4. Today, I am working on the head ^_^!
I drill holes in the hollow part of the head (idk what it’s called):

It’s hard to explain what I’m doing here, so I will let this picture explain it:sweat:

I didn’t show a lot of WIPs for the body, so I going to take as many pictures as I can for the head ^_^.

    5. I finished the rough shape of the head a few days ago. The clay is very thin, so I will put some on the inside.

I couldn’t get out all the clay the stuff that makes it hollow qnq. Any tips on how to get it out?

    6. Do you have a dremel? If so, a sanding barrel is great for removing a lot of material. To smooth out some type of rotating file can be better as thay are available in many different shapes and sizes.

    7. I don’t have a dremel or a rotating file. This may be something silly to say in this hobby, but I don’t exactly know what a sanding barrel is. For now, I’m just trying to sand it down with some rough sandpaper and then I will put so clay inside to cover up the imperfections.

    8. I sanded the face a little and I did a test face up. I also thickened the clay from the inside to make the clay less fragile.

    9. Looks like you are making some good progress. Do you have a profile picture of the head? The mouth looks like it's set very low, almost where the tip of the shin would normally be, but it's possible that it's the camera angle that makes it look that way.

I took a picture of the tools I usually use when evening things out. The tool attached to the dremel is a sanding barrel, or at least, that's the name I've heard. English is not my first language, so don't be too surprised if you find it called something else as well. The other attachments are different types of heads for filing and grinding. You can get the same general effect by wrapping a piece of sanding paper around a dowel, tooth pick or even your finger, but it will take a lot longer and may be trickier to get into the right position and still have enough space to move enough to get a good sanding effect.

    11. I think that is a pretty cute profile! I agree the lips might be a bit too low, but you could add some more clay to the chin to compensate and rebalance things, if you didn’t want to move the lips! I also really like the ear detail there. Keep it up! :D

    12. Thank you so much!! To be honest, I think I would leave the chin the way it is, because this doll is intended to be stylized as well.

I’m super happy with her ^_^!

    14. Nice progress! You already have so many parts put together! Good luck on your sculpting journey:daisy

    15. Hi! Sorry for not being active lately. I sculpted part of the head cap mechanism. “Part of” because she will also be getting magnets, so her faceplate will REALLY stay on. Also, I’m thinking of lengthening her upper legs because I just want her to be more proportionate.

    16. Hey guys! Sorry for being inactive for such a long time. If you are wondering, I have been working on my doll during my free time. Just to give you an idea, this is how she looks like:

As you can see, I made her a wig, but she still doesn’t have feet.

    17. hi hi! i love your progress, she's really gaining a personality!
if you would like *my* tips...
if you want your doll to be more "proportionate", maybe lengthen her lower legs to match the upper legs?
also, can we see a side view of her head, have you worked on it some more? i think the back may need a bit of trimming, just to bring it flush with the faceplate.
OTHERWISE she is a cutie, keep on working on her!

    18. Thank you so much for the feedback and the positive comments! In my opinion, her proportions are bothering me...

    19. Here is the side view of the head:

    20. She's coming along nicely!

I agree with deadish about the proportion between the upper and lower legs. But I would suggest sculpting the feet, or (if you are not in the mood for feet) a pair of vaguely foot-shaped place holders, first.
Having someting in place will help both with getting the visuals right and when you work on joints and the overall balance of the doll.

      this is what i thiiiiiiiiink
      maybe
      **shrugs**
the lips seem a tad too low on the face, but a little adjustment of angle and she is grand. also, try making a smaller head back like this, and maybe the neck could be lengthened a bit? this is all my own hoighty opinion, anyways, but i like giving tips. XD
