Aesthetics My First Faceup :P

Jan 2, 2016

    1. this is my first face up ever! For my new dollfie dream Laurel. I'm looking just for constructive criticism and critique, but please no mean things with no aim, i.e. This sucks I'm way better.

Something nicer would be, "This faceup needs a bit of work. The eyelashes should be a stronger line and there's a small smudge on her cheek. Glad I could help!!"

      (These are just examples)

    2. First off, your choices of colors are very lovely. It's good to use a couple like you have here.

I think that your work would greatly benefit from a steadier application when it comes to the eyelashes though, so they are a bit thinner. Contrast to such, maybe make the eyebrows a little darker? A thin brow line is very nice, but sometimes a making them just slightly darker can make them pop a lil more!

As a first faceup, this is very nice work! Thank you for sharing. I hope that my comments can give you a lil help! Keep up the wonderful work. :cake:

    3. Part of what you need is just practice :) The pastel around the eyes is streaky in a way that looks a bit dirty...not sure if they are smudges from your fingers, or if the sealant wasn't quite dry, or something else. I agree that the lashes would look better (cleaner and neater) if they weren't so thick. Did you use a very thin brush and dilute your paint? It takes a lot of practice to get it right.

Keep it up, and keep posting your progress :)

    4. You definitely chose good colors! And honestly that is super important in a faceup.
It does look like you've got the right idea and just need practice keeping things tidy. Pastels are a pain in the butt that way! Definitely do not touch the face with your fingers as you're working, and try to keep only a small amount of pastel on your brush. The more pastel that's on the brush, the harder it is to control. Also it looks like you need a smaller brush for painting the eyelashes. Thinning down the paint is extremely helpful- I like the Zoukeimura acrylic thinner that Volks sells (it's in a clear bottle with a yellow label).

Practice makes perfect and you are off to a good start!

    5. I might suggest thinner brushes, like script liners and such- also, make sure your paint has a inky type consistency so that it goes on evenly. Good luck!

    6. I really like the lashes like that: she make me imagine her like a ballerina dancer, with a lot of plumes..
I can suggest to do layers, seal and then add..it will prevent color smudges: layer of color on the eyes, seal, paint lashes :)
On the eyebrows you need a bit of practice (they are really difficult): more thick, more curved (you paint them a little too straight in my opinion :P )..
That's it..practice and attention to particular (like the lips that are smudge, but you can prevent this by layering color: first layer lighter color, then you can darken it layering more color).. :)

    7. She looks so cool! I love the darkness of her eyelashes and her lips ^_^
When I was first doing faceups I found it so hard to do blushing evenly, but I discovered a neat trick. I use a small makeup brush, rub it along a soft pastel (or powder shaved off a harder pastel) then tap the handle part against my finger a few times. It makes it go on so much smoother!

Also, I learnt to put the layer of pastel on first, then seal it, then draw on the eyelashes and eyebrows. I use very sharp watercolour pencils for those parts!

Nice job, your girl has so much character! I hope to see her all dressed up ^_^

    8. love the color choice ^^ the oranges and reds compliment each other perfectly and your blending on them is fantastic ^^ The shading on her lips is again a great choice i love how the darker colors contrast the brighter ones used around the eyes Thus creating two very different yet linked points of interest. the one thing i would advise work upon with the lips is that although you have a wonderful shape started for them they are not entirely even and the paint itself is thinner/thicker in some spots creating a bit of a grainy look. this is something that can easily be worked on by going back and taking a bit more time and adding a few more layers to even everything out ^^
they eyelashes have the same amazing shading as the lips where it is very plain to see that your grasp of color and understanding of the underlying concepts of shading is fantastic. again you have a wonderful shape started but it looks as they your paint may have been a bit to watery thus creating a bit of a smeared look to some of the eyelashes.
my advice for future face ups would simply be to take a bit more time working on the minor details and getting things to be crisper and a bit less runny ^^ i myself have a lot of trouble taking things slow (i get excited ^^) and often suffer from the same issues when i do so just slowing down makes a huge difference in the end result ^^
Over all you have done a wonderful job for your fist face up^^ she looks adorable and i can see an amazing amount of potential keep up the great work ^^

    9. I absolutely love the streaky and watercolour look on her eyelashes and eyeshadow. I have no idea if it was intentional, but I actually really want to know how you did it, too. It is gorgeous.
You might want to use a photo reference for your eyebrows or look at how other doll artists go about it. If it helps at all, I draw mine like this
      [IMG]
They are mostly diagonal lines, but they curve a little bit, the shape of the eyebrow tapers, and the direction of the slant changes depending on which end of the brow it is.

    10. I dig the super goth look you have going :D

One thing I have discovered that's a huge help to me is to do things on multiple layers if you haven't tried that. Like, one coat between each thing you want to try. You can use a kneaded rubber eraser to erase pastel pretty easily, it prevents you from having to start over all the time because if you make a smudge you can just erase it (I was surprised at how easily and thoroughly it comes off!) and not only does it help keep things clean, you can create some cool effects that way :)

      Keep it up!
