Aesthetics My First Face Up! (Picture heavy)

Aug 16, 2017

    1. So before my first doll arrives, I figured I'd practice doing face ups beforehand and bought an instock Xiao Xin Head (yellow skin) from Alice's Collections since it was only 25$.

I ended up encountering an issue where one layer of sealant came out kind of thick and almost sticky above the right eye (mainly the eyelid and the eyebrow area) and that was the layer where I was adding the pencil lines for the eyelid creases. What ended up happening was the pencil dug into the sealant layer instead of drawing on top of it and it was pretty much impossible to erase any mistakes (even using water and a fine q-tip to wash the lines away didn't really work). So hopefully next time I'll be able to create nicer eyelid creases.

Also, my phone doesn't take very good pictures, but these are some views in more natural lighting (the freckles don't show up very well)

Please let me know what you think or if you have any tips for future face ups! :)

    2. Holy...!!
You blew that face up right out of the park, it look amazing <3 It looks like you've been doing this for a while, not just starting! I love the brow work, and the details on the eyes really bring it to life. Your style is unique, and I'd love to see your skills grow in the future! Definitely looking forward to seeing your first doll come home and how you style them :D

As for tips, well, you're already making my face ups look like pre school :XD: I'd say just keep going!

    3. Thank you so much! I'm very excited to get my hands on my first doll, I want to try my hand at body blushing too~

    4. Wow that looks great!

Those eyebrows look amazing and I love your style.

Keep up the good work! :) :)

    5. Impressive ! You have a natural talent, by the looks of it. Really like the lips.

    6. I had liked lips and freckles)

    7. This is lovely, I really like the eyebrows and eyelashes in particular. Great work.

    8. @Baktu @sea2702 @Reinhart

Thank you all so much! /)v(\
The eyelashes are actually one of the parts I'm not too terribly happy with and want to mess around with more on my next face up. I'm glad to hear they look nice!

    9. For your first faceup, that's amazing! :o
Some people are just gifted with a knack for painting/drawing on dolls hahaa. I think there is only general improvement to come as you continue to hone your faceup skills. And I'm not one to like freckles on dolls because they're really hard to get to look right, but yours are subtle and natural looking! A job well done! :)

    10. This is really beautiful. For some reason it makes me feel somewhat nostalgic, but I can't quite figure out why. I really adore how you've done the freckles though, and how subtle the eyelashes are :D

    11. For a first (or really, any) faceup, that is really gorgeous!
As for the sticky faceup, I've encountered the problem sometimes, mostly while working on vinyl dolls, but still. I think it's just that sometimes, parts of it can take a little longer to dry. My best advice would be to let it dry a little longer when you notice there's still stickiness. I'm not 100% sure, but I vaguely remember reading that the more layers they are, the longer each new one takes to dry.

    12. Thank you so much! I used a splatter technique with watercolor to get a naturally random pattern and more subtle color for the freckles.

Thank you very much! I'm still messing with how I want to go about doing eyelashes, I'm glad the more subtle style is a good look! :)

Thank you so much for the advice! I had a feeling that might have been the problem but was too eager to get to the next step, haha. I'll remember this for the future though!

    13. Ah you did such a good job! I love the look of the doll, such a pretty natural look

    14. Very nice work!! You used beautiful colors, and the linework is great (I wouldn't have guessed that you had trouble with the sealant at all)! The lips look quite good, though it looks like you didn't fill out the top lip completely- especially in the photo of the head straight on, the color doesn't seem to go all the way to the edge of the lip. Also, based on the headcap color, it looks like you blushed this head a LOT. Which by itself isn't a bad thing, but if you blush a head too much you will find that it no longer matches its body XD That can be okay since, y'know, human skin has variation, but if it's really a stark difference then it looks like the head and body are two different resin colors. Just something to keep an eye out for :0

    15. You really got talent on makeup! I love the colour you use, and my suggestion is try to draw smoother lines either use shaper pencil or brushes?

    16. Beautiful face up!
However I like the picture with more natural lighting.

    17. I don't think I've ever seen a "first attempt" that looks so polished! Especially with freckles. They can be hard to do and make them look naturally dispersed across the face, but this is gorgeous! I especially love the detail work in the brows and the sketchy lines/creases around the eyes. They give it an awesome sense of dimension without being too unnatural or heavy. This is lovely! I would have honestly expected this to have come from a seasoned face up pro, not a first timer, so you must have worked really hard and have a lot of artistic talent!

      Thank you for sharing!

    18. Awww your freckles are really cute! You did a wonderful job!

I dont see any crazy imperfections or that you had much issue above the right eye. I wouldn't have even gave it a 2nd glance until I read that. I still don't see anything that bothers me. The insides of the eye edges look amazing.

    19. Wow It's beautiful!!

    20. WOW so beautiful. I like how delicate the eyebrows and freckles look :)

    21. Thank you so much!

Thank you! It was actually intentional with not filling out the lips. I've seen it done on a few face ups before and I kind of do it in my artwork as well. I like the soft effect it gives. Though I do think I will continue to experiment with how I color lips.
I was also quite surprised by how much color difference there was after the blushing! It is definitely something I will keep an eye on in the future. Since I plan on blushing the body of my dolls as well, hopefully it won't be too much of an issue.
Thank you so much for all the feedback! :)

Thank you so much! I will look into how to get a finer tip on my pencils :)

      Thank you!
I totally agree lol! Unfortunately my phone takes awful pictures and I'm still in the midst of figuring out how to adjust it. In the future I will try to take more HQ photos in natural lighting.

    22. Thank you so much for such kind words! I am incredibly flattered /)v(\

Thank you! I'm glad it isn't terribly obvious :)

      Thank you both so much!
The reception to this has been incredibly uplifting!
Truely! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart! :)
