Aesthetics :) My first face-up attempt

Feb 15, 2015

1. Yesterday I finally bit the bullet and tried my first face-up. The victim was my Doll Family-A practice head I've had sitting around. The poor thing doesn't have any eyes or eyelashes, so I'll have to buy him some. And eventually a body. :sweat

I was going for a natural look, so it's pretty subtle (maybe needs more contrast or some gloss??), and I'm not too happy with the eyeliner, but overall I think it went surprisingly well. Anyway, let me know what you think! :aheartbea

No step-by-step photos sorry! I was having too much fun... :sweat

2. I really like the shading you did around the nose and mouth. I think that's a really overlooked area in faceups. I'm also impressed with your first try on eyebrows. Far better than my first try!

The lips could use some gloss, although not heavy if you're trying to stay natural. I agree with you on the eyeliner...you might want a more subtle blush with pastels instead of a hard line. Also, if you're going to apply eyelashes, you need to color the bevel of the top lid to better blend in with the lashes. The bevel of the lower lid can be pinkish like you've done the corner of the eyes. A good way to get really thin lashes on the bottom is to use very sharp watercolor pencils. Alternatively, really thin out the paint with acrylic medium. It will make it flow better. There are some good lash tutorials on DeviantArt.

3. Wow, this is great for your first faceup! The eyebrows look even and the freckles are cute :) the shading on the lips also looks very realistic. Good job!!

4. maelstromrider Thank you so much for your helpful advice! I'll definitely have a look at some tutorials. :)
MissyMagoo Thanks~ That's very kind of you to say. :aheartbea

5. Nice job, very realistic.

6. Really well done for your first face up. I like it :)

7. Personally I love it! Very cute, and very much to my style. Great for a first face up.

I like the way you've done the freckles, but depending on how you want your style to be, something you might want to try is a more natural freckle. It looks like you manually put on each freckle. Natural freckles aren't consistent and no matter how hard we try to make them random we can't help but fall into a pattern. So possible you might want to try flicking them on with a sturdier square brush. I've seen a lot of tutorials around with people putting them on this way.

8. It's very cute, it's great for a first try! I really like the way you blushed the head, it looks so natural!
I would try maybe doing the lips lines a little lighter? I think it would look more natural :3

9. Thank you so much everyone! I'm thinking I might wipe this face-up and try a new one, taking into account your advice. :)

10. Great start!)
3 advices:
1. Use teethbrush to spreaf freckles on face, it will look more realistic (there should be tutorial).
2. Liquid acrilic paint as eyeliner.
3. Thin brush or pencil for eyelashes)

11. This is very well done, especially for a first face-up. I went for a freckled look my first go, too, and ended up with a speckled goth. That... was an adventure...

Considering you've already received tips on eyeliner, eyebrows and lashes, I wanted to suggest that the shadow lines on the lips might do better if they weren't quite so dark. It's good to add definition but when it's so bold, it makes the lips look a touch dry. Gloss would help with that, too. Also, sealant! Layers and layers of pastel and sealant. I've discovered the hard way that you can't get the look you want on lips in just a layer or two.

Other than that, well done, you! The shading is impeccable and I love the fact that you didn't forget the ears. Keep at it and each time you try a face-up, it gets a little easier and a little better :D

12. A fantastic first attempt! I agree with the previous comments that the lip does look a bit dry because the lines are so dark. The lips would blend better with the overall look if it's softened a fit. I like the freckles a lot.

13. Really, it`s not bad for the first time attempt. Lips look nice. As for brows, why not to make a foundation first and then, draw separate hairs? Some extra blush around eyes also can give more lively expression to the face.

14. I think it looks really excellent, especially if this is your first face up! I don't know what you could do differently, I can't find anything to say about it! I think maybe more colors could help a bit? Like... Subtle colors, not like crazy ones. I don't really know, though, it's already very good! Either way, amazing job!

15. This came out so nice for a first face up, honestly looks amazing!!

16. Thank you everyone! I have wiped this face-up and am ready to give it another try~ It's really so much fun. :D

17. Love the freckles

18. This is really awesome the gloss on the lips will make them much more real their beautiful though!

19. You have the skills, but I agree with AmsterDrumm that a foundation color for the brows is a good idea, as is adding some cool tones to the shading. That doesn't mean blue eyeshadow or anything noticeable, it's just that human skin does have cool tones, and that helps give a face dimension. This artist explains it best- scroll down to 'principles': http://justchien.com/?p=1294

20. The eyebrows are excellent! I love the freckles and details around the nose too.

As for criticisms, my only criticism is that the lips could use some gloss. That's about it though. Great work!
