My first doll - 63cm Female BJD

Jun 17, 2016

    1. Hello ^^ I'm new here and this will be my first BJD. I plan for her to be approximately 63cm tall. So far I am using DAS paper clay (even though after reading that La Doll would have been better :pout but I had already started. Too late now :p) Critiques and advice are very much welcome ^^ Thank you for viewing.

      Anyway, here's some pictures~~~:<3

Sadly I only have free time on the weekends to work on her. So this will probably take a really long time to complete. I'm having so much fun working on her though. ^_^

    2. Nice start! I think DAS will work out just as well as LaDoll, I've used both but DAS is nice because it's cheaper and more readily available where I live, considering the more or less similar clay quality. I know the feeling of only having time to work on a doll project over the weekend- but gives me more to look forward to on Friday! Anyway, I'll look forward to your next update!

    3. Thank you TenguCrow! It's reassuring to hear that using DAS was not a mistake. :D

      Here's what I did over the weekend~~~

I also made wrist joint balls by putting eyescrews into clay balls. I wrapped some wire around the end of the screw to help anchor it into the clay. I know this style will result in less mobility, but I think it will be less likely to break. I do not plan to mould/cast this doll.

    4. I think I put the hip balls on too far forward/up so plan to push the top lower back forward next time I work on her. I will also be adding most of her figure on later (hips, glute, bust, etc)

    6. Here's some pictures of what I did this weekend.

Knees were tricky at first when the clay was wet. I found it made things easier to let it harden a bit (like 10 minutes) then add more on for detail.

I did a practice string, just to see how she looks all put together. I now see that her thighs/legs are too skinny and chest is a little too bulky. So I'll be working on that next time ^^

    7. The line is clean and her movement is very natural looking. Amazing progress so far! I really like the pelvis.
As for the chest being bulky...I don't think it's the chest so much as her shoulders. Maybe "flatten" the sides of her chest and set the shoulder cups deeper?

    8. Thank you Glyndon ^^ Thanks for the input. I was kind of stuck on what I should do (I was thinking of just carving the arms down because I'm lazy like that lol) but I realize that would look weird and I'd just regret the short-cut in the end. I'm actually supersized how well wet DAS clay will join with clay has already dried as long as you wet it and prep it a bit first (learned this by having to redo the knees and they came out nice and solid.) So adjusting the shoulder sockets should be pretty easy.

      Yay! it's Friday I get to work on her again soon~~<3 \( ^ โ–ผ ^ )/

    9. Well I didn't get much done this last weekend (I got bit by the Poke'mon Go bug) :pout :dead. I did manage to slim down the shoulders a little (I'm not done with them yet) I'm really happy with how the shoulders are turning out so far and plan to even them out/make then symmetrical next weekend.

Gosh, I cant wait to start making cute clothes for her~!

    10. Looking really nice, when will you start working on the head?
Also do you have any photos of how the torso joint works? :))

    11. I've finally had time to work on my doll. :D

the torso joint still needs some work.

I made a sloppy mould with scrap clay while waiting for bits to dry while I was working on hands and feet.
(I painted some of it when I was drunk one night lol... not a good idea, it causes the clay to stick)

It makes a decent replica for basic shape. :o so I guess I'm making 2 dolls now :XD

I'm not very experienced uploading pictures. hope they came out right. (they seem a little small on my screen)

I'm done with this doll. She didn't come out as well made as I was hoping :pout. She can't stand on her own and she looks pretty bad naked lol. But a learned a lot and have started my next doll and it's already going much better ^^

this is the start of my 2nd doll.
