My first BJD faceup!

May 12, 2013

    1. Hello everyone! After too many years of admiring everyone else's skills I decided to try my own hand at faceups. I recently landed myself a practice BJD head to try on and I'm surprised at how well the results came out! What do you guys think? Constructive crit is welcome (and requested!)

    2. I think it looks great! I love the blushing, and the eyebrows!

    3. She looks really cute! I like the blushing. I can't critique. My face up skills are non existent!

    4. your first faceup? holy *beep* Can please share some of your talent to me? This is WOW! How did you get that delicated eyebrow?
Beginner don't usually take on dolls this size because they are just too small. And you jump right in the challenge! Well done, very well done!

    5. Thanks for the comments so far, everyone! Yushiro, I did the eyebrows with mostly pastel and then defined them a little bit with some color pencil. The rest of the eye detail was painted with acrylics (with a lot of thinner) and pastels. I know looks can be deceiving but this is actually an MSD sized head so it wasn't nearly as challenging as you think it might be ^^ I still have lots to learn.

    6. I hope you will get him/her a body? He/She looks too cute haha! Where did you get the practive head from? I'm thinking about trying to do face up as well hehe

    7. I'm thinking KDF girl body in NS for this head? Not sure though, she doesn't even have a name yet! Umm.. someone commissioned me to do a faceup on a vinyl doll and I received this head as part of the trade. If you're looking for practice heads there's plenty on the marketplace for relatively low prices :)

    8. Better than mine! what did you use? air brush?

    9. kogame103, I can't afford an airbrush, haha! It's acrylics, pastels, and color pencils.

    10. I think this is a really good face-up and I can't believe this is your first try*jealous* I don't see anything wrong with this one, maybe its perfect.
To improve I'd say try a more difficult style, something more artsy or trying a different facial expression.
The only advice i can give you is to try different styles, even if its not your taste it helps round out your own unique style.

    11. Aw, she/he's such a sweetie. ^__^

My suggestion would be when you wash the head, make sure to let it dry completely before spraying the undercoat. This is especially important in the ear. Leaving it to dry overnight helps. The pastel in the ears looks a bit clumpy and I've had this issue before on faceups because the ear wasn't completely dry and effected the MSC I was using.
Aw, but your paint work on the eyes is so neat and pretty!
I think the pink pastel just needs a bit more evening out as you blend it out into the cheek.
It also looks like it may have gotten a bit dirty around the temples, but I don't know if that was already something on the sculpt.

Great job! So, so cute. Keep up the great work, you're headed straight toward professional.

    12. Wow! She's so cute! Since no one has actually offered some constructive critiscm, I guess I'll add something. The only thing I can say is that the crease line thing of her eye is a bit straight. If you could add a bit of a curve next time, it would turn out even better! (if that's even possible!)

    13. Wow! Great job for your first! Very light and natural - keep up the good work!

    14. This looks like a really good face-up job. and sometimes basic supplies are the best way to go when you can't afford anything else.

    15. popopo, Lady Ravenswood, RainbowUnicorn, thank you so much for your input! I'm still looking for practice heads/recommended styles to try out since there's definitely more to faceups than the sweet/natural styles that I'm used to. I realize that I need to work on cleaning in between layers of sealant and just being more patient with drying times and adding color in general.

umu-dolly and YamiEnzeru88, thank you for the compliments!

    16. Your first faceup ? Really ? Wahou. I love, it's beautiful.
