20–39cm Dolls My first bjd: David (plus sized male doll)

i wanted to try making a doll again! there are a select few (really beautiful) fat girl dolls out there (i know theres a few on etsy & also viola from summerbird BJDs) but it got me thinking about fat boy dolls. there really aren't any out there (and the only ones i could find people suggesting were kid-shaped or simply 'not muscular' as opposed to actually chubby.) so! here i am! trying to make a plus sized male doll! i have no idea if this will end up being a project that i get casted or not, but i'm just gonna have fun and take my time working on it ^u^

right now it's the VERY start, rough-sculpt/idea gathering stage.

so far i'm happy with the basic shape. it's a bit hard to find references, so if anyone has a favourite plus sized model or something that i could find photos of that'd be a big help! so far he's a bit inspired by abearnamedtroy on IG 'cause i like his style.

here's an update for today:





i've added a lot more bulk, sculpted out more folds and i think overall got a better shape and idea of how to move forward! he's also got partial thighs now!

also i've gotten a super rough start on the face. i'm waiting for it to dry and then i'm gonna start my first 'subtracting' stage. i need to add more brow detail and keep working on the mouth and eyes. i'm liking the smile but i'm not sure if i want a more demure kind of model pout (he's gonna be a fashionable & proud guy after all!) lmk what you think about that!




i hope these images work ;w; i might need to change them to drive links if they don't. i'm really enjoying myself!! i've never had the patience to do this before, but i gained a new understanding of the process and how long it takes to slowly build up and cut away until the character really shines through thanks to the forums here!

another update on the face! spent today carving, adding, and fiddling. i collected more reference images and i think i'm moving forward!!

 

aw thanks so much!! he's gonna be a Tiny (probably approx. 28-35cm) since i don't really have the space or skill to make anything bigger just yet i hope that i can cast him!! i'm gonna keep doing my best to build him right!

Ive just ordered some primer (tamiya fine surface primer) and im so excited about refining things! I think engineering the joints is gonna be a ton of fun!

i haven't had a lot of time to work on david lately but today i tinkered with his face some more. changed the eyes to a more proportional shape. i'm trying to walk a fine line between masculine and sweet. Trying to hit that BJD style while not making him look like an anime character is proving challenging as well.


i'm trying to get him to look approachable/confident/sweet ;p


the ears are still really rough atm.

hands! well, one hand!





i'm really shooting for some masculine and handsome hands, while still being a little softer and plumper than your average BJD. i basically don't want them to read as children's hands. this is the first round of carving and adding (i tend to sculpt a sloppy, basic shape, then carve out the shape i want, and then add clay where there was not enough or when i tweak things, and from there just flip flop between carving, adding, and sanding)
