My first(?) attempt at sculpting a head

May 13, 2012

    1. First of all- Hello! I'm Lehani :) I'm a n00b at doll making and sculpting in general so I would really appreciate help/critiques from other members :)

I put a question mark next to 'first' because she's technically not my first attempt.
My first try at making a BJD was about 4, 5 years ago all the way back in middle school, and... yeah..

On the left is the head I am working on (this pic was taken about a week ago) and on the right is the head from four years ago.

Her head is a lot smaller now with all the sanding and whatnot.. I'm not exactly sure how big her head has to be to fit the MSD body from Doll Leaves that I ordered for her though. I'll probably finalize making the head after the body arrives.

      This is the "plan" that I drew up for the head. I ended up not referencing it too much... There is another image/concept drawing I drew up for this girl, but it somehow went missing in the piles of paper I have on my desk at the moment ^^;

annnnnd this is how she looks now! Well sort of. The camera distorted her face so her mouth and nose look a lot bigger in this picture :(

Critiques/comments would be very helpful ^^
      Thanks for looking!

    3. I agree, the progress you've made in the last five years is amazing. I really like how your soften the nose and other features. It can be tough judging head size for bodies. Sometimes you can get away with a little smaller or bigger as long as the next piece fits well.

    4. Thank you everyone ^^ and wyverngem, thanks for the tip!

    5. Updates Part 1! May 31, 2012

      Hello everyone!
It's been a while but I've returned with some updates on my dolly heads.

Here are some pictures of the newer head. I think the basic shape is there now- I just need to give her a good sanding.
I'm also thinking of purchasing some Mr. Hobby surfacer... does anyone know the best (and cheapest TT) place to get some?

I've decided to give her a name too. Her name is Woojoo, which means 'space' in Korean.
Also, does anyone have any tips for sculpting ears? I'm pretty stumped on how I should go about doing this :(

      A shot with a wig ^^
She seems to be highly unphotogenic. Hopefully that will change after I give her a faceup @_@

Onto part 2 of my updates! ^^

    6. Updates Part 2! May 31, 2012

While working on Woojoo, I felt that I should make some use of the old head floating around. A lot of clay and time went into that ugly head from 5 years ago, so I decided to revamp it and make a new sculpt out of it, as practice.

I ended up really liking the result, surprisingly.

I had to go in and hack away a lot of the excess clay to form a new face shape. I completely re-did the nose, and gave her an open mouth too.

I think I'll make some little teeth part for this head ^^. Her name is Ophelia, and she was really inspired by the painting below by John Everett Millais.

It's one of my favorite paintings, and we were watching Hamlet in literature class so I had to sculpt a head based on Ophelia!

Both heads are very splotchy(?) because I used two different brands of paperclay. One is just pure white while the other seems to turn a bit gray when dry..

Thanks for taking a look! And critiques are always welcome ^_^

    7. I like both heads very much but i must sa i like your second one the best :) love the emotion in her face!

    8. :) It's turning out really nicely.

    9. Heehee, it's funny that you would give the first head a Korean name~ Just as I was looking at the 3/4 photo of Woojoo, I was thinking that she looked very Asian (Korean, specifically), and then I scrolled down and saw what you'd named her. It must be her eyes~ They're very lovely. :)
I also really like Ophelia! What a great idea for a doll! That painting is so beautiful and sad. A doll based on it will doubtlessly turn out gorgeous.

I really look forward to seeing progress on both of these!

    10. Wow, they both look really nice!
