My Finalised First 1/3rd Production Model

Dec 3, 2021

    1. I've been trying to figure out making a BJD for over 7 months, as a small artisan business, with a view to occasionally making them available to the wider public.

Today I finally finished what I hope is my very first production model.

"Ash" is is a resin wood elf BJD (1/3rd scale - 55cm tall) and currently a unique a one-off.

He is the first of what I hope to be, several, elf-boy models that I intend to create over the next year or so, assuming there is demand for him.

After months of planning and preparation, he took about 3 weeks to make and assemble.
He is made from 3D printed resin.

    2. What kind of critique are you looking for?
It would help to see the whole doll blank and undressed as well as from more angles. At least a full profile and a full back view.

Unless you are only interested in some more specific points that makes those angles irrelevant, of course.

    3. Thanks for the comment. I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure what kind of critique I'm after, I'm still very naïve at all of this.
I think I was just putting him out there to make sure I didn't get comments pointing out any glaringly obvious mistakes I've missed.
I've pasted a blank/undressed pic below and would be happy to receive any general feedback that anyone may have.
      Thanks.

    4. What age is he portraying if he was human? Or is it too elf specific and not tied to human style aging at all.
If I was looking for a child doll in this size, he is pretty cute and I like his ears. From the pictures my biggest concern is with the posing, mainly the knees and torso. How stable is he?
Did you notice the back of the thighs is kind of striped / uneven, or is that just a trick of the picture?

    5. I have never worked with digital sculpting, so my eyes see things more in the context of physical sculpting. Keep this in mind as I may see things in a different way and look for other things than you do.

It's hard to tell in these pictures because of the perspective and distortion, but it does seem like he has very narrow hips and thighs proportionally to his upper body. The arms have some nice muscle definition going on, suggesting an athletic body type but I can't see that theme in his lower body. On the same note, his neck seem rather short and narrow compared to his shoulder width.

To me, his body reads as an adult. His head is disproportionally large for an adult, but that is a pretty common thing with dolls. His hands are more in proportion with his body than with his head and again that may be a stylistic choice but it reinforces the maturity of the body. If on the other hand the head to body ratio is what gives his age, his hands (and probably his feet) seem disproportionally small for a child.
There does seem to be a tendecy of "flatness" front to back on the over all body. But it's hard to tell from the pictures. A full body profile, taken from a larger distance and with the camera pointing straigt towards the doll about mid height would make it easier to tell. I may be misinterpreting the picture.

His face is cute and I like the open and curious expression he has.
If he were human I'd say his eyes are very close together (a rule of thumb is to have about one eye width of distance between the inner corners of the eyes) and his mouth is a bit high up from his chin. But not all humans are entirely proportional and since he is an elf, I guess anything goes, really.

I am guessing that the uneven area on his thighs is a consequence of the printing process and will be fixed when you perpare your master for casting?

And as ususal with there things, these are just observations, take it for what it's worth. The stylistic choices are all yours and if you are happy with and believe in your product, that's what matters in the end.

    6. Thanks for the comments and great feedback, it’s given me lots to work with. I’m going to have another tweak and see if I can make some improvements and will get back
