My Dolls Need Critique!

Nov 8, 2020

    1. I've been making 3D printed BJDs for some time using the free BJD models available on Thingiverse but I have now decided to try and make my own 3D models from which to make prints. I could really use some critique for these dolls below as I have been staring at these sculpts for so long I suspect I can no longer see them right :sweat I am using MeshMixer for these for now though I may switch to SculptGL or ZBrush (if I can justify the expense) down the line.

Doll 1 has been printed using a resin printer. She's a child type doll and is meant to have more child-like proportions.
Doll 2 was printed using blue PLA (and in a much smaller size as a prototype). She's a stylized adult type doll.

Sorry about the links, I could not get Google Photos to let me embed the images.

    2. Congrats! They both look really good. Can the head move down far enough? Might need a little more room there. And can they stand? If not maybe with a few small tweaks you can fix that as well. Also you give some joints lots of room to rotate. Could be by design but i try to cover them up a little more where possible. More just my opinion then critique tho, they both look great.
Dont know what you plan to do but if you sand, prime and wetsand the PLA doll (parts) it can get super smooth as well (might only need a little liquid filler if there are really bad spots).

    3. Thanks for your feedback!

I am having some trouble getting the head to move down more. There's already a pretty generous space in the head for the neck ball but I'm wondering if that space is too deep?

The dolls can actually stand! They have trouble with ballance but they're able to keep their legs from kicking too bad. The first doll is currently strung too tight so I suspect most of the kicking on her part is due to that. The PLA doll is able to keep from kicking more than I expected considering how smooth her unfinished joints currently are.

I tend to keep my dolls joints pretty open because I really like them to have as much range as possible and I don't like the look of the more squared/boxed in joints. I do plan to refine their sculpture some so they look more coherent and organic when put together.

I'm still working on finishing the PLA doll. I tend to finish the PLA ones with Rust-Oleum spray with multiple protective coats of MSC to keep it from chipping. But this one is a prototype so I'm not sure how finished she's going to get in the end.

    4. Looking at the previous posts, I think the "head moving down" actually means looking down towards the feet? If so, then the way to get more mobility is to make more space, but just in the chin area. Have the doll look down, and you will see that it's the part of the chin hitting the neck that causes the head to stop. Removing a slight bit of that chin, in a gentle triangle will allow more mobility. So if I turned the head over looked at the bottom, the space for the neck ball would be slightly oval instead of round.
Though you might be talking about something else entirely, if so, my apologies!

    5. I think they're lovely, and I'm very impressed! I'd actually like to see full on photos of the faces - my favorite part of any sculpt. (i.e., doll 1 side was my favorite. XD) Have you gone the step further to add faceups to either of them yet?

If you want to add pictures to your posts, you're going to have to use an image hosting site like flickr or imgur, though.

    6. Thanks for the tip cupcakedolls! I'll work to add that feature to the 3D model for my next trial print.
To answer your question celga, I have only done a faceup on the prototype doll I first made which predates the ones in the picture. The face is the same as doll 1 though, just bigger(I didn't quite get my sizing right at first):

I will be doing the face up for the dolls above soon as well but I wanted to finish up the prototype first as practice doing faceups :)
