20–39cm Dolls My 3D WIPs

Jul 10, 2024

    1. Hiya!

I'm just about to 3D print my first BJD head and/or doll and I thought it would be a good time to post some images of all my projects, get any feedback before taking the plunge and sending my files off to get prototypes printed.

I don't have an image hosting website anymore so I linked to my old blogger account where I posted the images.

      Thanks!

      Hodgepodge: It's been a while...

    2. impressive work, the sculpting looks great! the engineering might need a little work i am just listing from what i can see. The thing that caught my eye is that the neck socket on the first, second and last head looks too high up and may result in weird posing, like the back of the head should be extended down somewhat (like head number three ) or they might end up sitting with a raised chin sort of pose, or too far foreword when put on a neck?

with the rabbit i would be concerned about his legs staying in that pose instead of bending, maybe you have already accounted for this as this could be hidden inside the joints but (if you haven't already) i would recommend adding notches to lock the joints in the desired poses or at least the standing one!

the naga's(?) head also looks like he may only be able to move side to side and not tilt upward but if that's not a pose you care for him to take that's fine! The fact that his torso joint are rather angled also catches my eye, it's hard to say without a cutaway shot but i would check if all of them would actually contribute to his posing , if the ball sockets hidden in the cups of the joints aren't round and big enough they won't do much but they could be perfectly functional and i just can't tell from the provided images.

with ball joints i find only having them in hand or a ton experience would prevent any mishaps as gravity and elastic start to effect the dolls posing so don't despair if they don't end up quite like how you envisioned :sweat

    3. Thanks for the input and I agree with every point you made!

I do have some notches inside the bunny, but I was considering sueding the non-hinge joints. The naga (you're right!) neck joint is notched in the neck to provide additional range of motion, but it's going to be limited because I didn't want to compromise the anatomy too much. That'll probably bite me in the butt later, but that project is going to take me a while. There are so many issues with tolerances, notching and etc. that I decided to put it down for a bit and tackle some other bjd projects. I'll come back to it when my brain has had some time to wrap around the issues.

It was more difficult than I anticipated trying to figure out how joints work in ZBrush and then balancing posability with esthetics. My brain hurts from all the iterations. I think I just gave up and decided to print some cheap prototypes and work it out in real life.

I might have to bite the bullet and learn a CAD program so I can avoid the agonizing odyssey of trying to find a mechanical engineer.

Thanks again for the great critique, I appreciate it!
