Aesthetics Muhans_Doll Face-Up - Happy Puppy & Crying Puppy

Jan 2, 2024

    1. I figured this would be the best place to share these Face-Ups I did last year. They are the third and fourth Face-Up I painted.
They definitely aren´t perfect but I still like how they turned out. I´m still struggling with the eyebrows and eyelashes. Constructive criticism and tips are always appreciated!

These two are amazing sculpts by Muhans_Doll (Happy Puppy and crying Puppy). I have a Guard Love 1/5 boy body ordered for this character and I can´t wait to see him come to life :3nodding:

    4. So cute! I love the glossiness of the undereye/ lashline it looks so pretty and the blushing is super cute! I have a happy puppy and it's one of my fav sculpts! Putting them on a 1/5 scale body is such a good idea:whee:

    5. Thank you :3nodding: Oh that’s awesome! I‘ve only seen two or three owner pictures of this sculpt so this is great to hear. ^^

Yeah I originally fell in love with the look of this sculpt on a 1/5 body. I asked Muhans_Doll on Instagram what type of body the head was on in the promo pictures, because I had never seen that size before. I usually don’t like the „baby-like“ look that most 1/6 dolls have, but this introduced me into tinier BJDs :D I think the taller, skinnier body is going to balance the baby look out quite well :)

    6. Hi, I saw you posted in Critique so I hope this is okay to say. I'm not an artist, first off. I can hardly hold a pencil without poking myself in the eye. I'm especially not a faceup artist, again pencil + eye = pain.

I really like all the colors you used on these two faces! I think they coordinate very well with each other, and I love the gloss on their lashlines.

I'd just say, while I like the color, there might be too much of it? I'm not sure what characters you had in mind for these two cuties so please tell me I'm wrong if I make an incorrect assumption.

These sculpts have cute little noses but I think you may have blushed them a little too much, for my tastes anyways. Same with their cutie pie cheeks and around their eyes. I like that you did other colors than just pinks and red around the eyes to help break it up. Again, if that's a central part of the character, say no more!

I really like the blushing on the forehead, and I like how you followed the form of the sculpts' foreheads with it. The brows look fantastic too!

I think these are amazing, and you clearly have a lot of talent. These are just my little nitpicks.

    7. Hi thank you for the feedback :) Of course it’s okay to say! I‘m always looking to improve and words from another person can help with that a lot!
I can kind of see what you mean haha. I was definitely going for this type of blushing. :XD: I love the slightly „sick“ look of red noses xD

I do think it might be a little bit too much on the crying one to be honest. There is slightly more red on his cheeks and nose. Maybe that’s why I prefer the smiling one slightly. XD

    8. Since you asked for feedback on the eyebrows and eyelashes specifically: what is it that you don't like about them/what were you aiming for? I can say what I might do differently, but I don't know if our tastes are the same, you know?

    9. I don’t really like the harsh lines! I use acrylic airbrush paints for them and dilute them with paint thinner. But I still can’t achieve that softer look I‘m aiming for. I would like for them to be a bit lighter and feather out in the end. I don’t know how to describe it better haha.

    10. Well, I have never used airbrush paints, so I can't give you specific advice about them... :sweat

Generally thinning out paint until it's semi-transparent will give you more of a fade, although then you have to be careful about it getting too runny to work with. It can also help to put less paint on the brush—just lightly dip it, rather than fully soaking it. Also pushing down more firmly when you start the brushstroke, and lifting/flicking the brush away from the surface at the end of the stroke. This might take a bit of practice (on a piece of scrap paper?) to get the hang of.

Of course using lighter colours will give a softer look too... Or you could add more of a wash of colour to the brows using your airbrush (or whatever you were using for the blushing), which might help blend the lines better.

These are just things that come to mind from my general painting experience, I don't know if they'll apply here!

    11. Thanks for the tips! I have indeed tried most of these and I have problems with the opacity of my paint. :sweat

When I have it dilluted enough to be able to make very light strokes you almost can’t see it on the dolls head. But if I add more paint it gets too dark and harsh again.

I‘m not sure if it’s me or if that’s just the nature of my paints. I have heard that some people use watercolor paints and I can imagine that working better for this kind of thing. Acrylics do tend to create harsher edges, so I suppose watercolors would be easier for this. I‘ve never tried it though. Maybe I should look into it haha.
