Hi folks, I'm planning to touch up Caro's faceup today (which is my first and only faceup to date). I sealed the original faceup with plain MSC (not UV Cut). Since then I've gotten hold of some UV Cut, which I'd very much like to use after my touch-ups. So two questions: 1. Can I just go ahead and lay on a little bit more acrylic color here and there, since there is still an MSC topcoat in place? 2. Does anyone know of issues with using MSC UV Cut on a doll that already has a layer of plain MSC? If it's dodgy, I'll re-seal with the plain MSC (and keep his butt out of the sun--I've already seen a meaningful color change on that boy!). Thanks in advance!
OK, I'm a bit of a hothead. So I went ahead with it. So far, so good... Now, to learn how to paint! XD Caro: Hey, I like my faceup. GJ: Well, that's important. I'm glad you do.
I don't see why it would be a problem, but I would advise washing his head gently to remove any surface oils or dirt before spraying again. ^_^ Let us know how it goes!
Thanks. So far, so good. I used a little bit of slightly damp Mr Clean sponge on the unpainted areas of his face, and a little water rinse, before I began painting, then a second pass with the sponge (unpainted areas only) when I was done. The MSC UV Cut went on and is acting fine so far. (Pictures up in Gallery, if you are interested...) ops:
Just for my own knowledge, would this kind of MSC be approproate for using exclusively? http://www.hlj.com/product/GNZB-521 I really need some MSC, and it seems like they don't have the regular in stock. Thanks!
You were asking if it's ok to use the UV Cut MSC Flat as the "default" MSC, have I understood you right? I think most people prefer the UV Cut for its protective qualities. I would have bought UV Cut right from the start had it been available. (By the way, it's working fine on top of the plain MSC.) Flat is definitely what you're looking for, btw (as opposed to some variety of gloss or semi-gloss...) Color change in dollies from too much sun is a real hazard. I speak from hard experience on that one; Caro has taken on a distinctly yellow cast. I happen to like the way it looks, but I wouldn't want him getting too much sallower. I'm very relieved to have his face coated with UV Cut. Once I get round to sanding his joints, I'll probably coat his whole body with it.
Indeed! Thanks for your info. That is what I'll have to buy, then. I dunno what I'd do if Sora went all yellow. But yes indeed, the shade does look nice on Paris.
My much awaited latest girl's Korean customiser very clearly pointed out that she (he?) coated the faceup with multiple coats of MSC, and finished the whole thing off with MSC UV Flat. Since s/he is a professional customiser, I assume (and certainly hope!) s/he knows what s/he is doing! ops:
Could it be that Caro's yellowing is due to the MSC's own colour? From what I've read, the MSC itself has a slight yellow cast, and maybe one of the coats you applied was too thick? Just rambling here, it just seems odd that he would yellow so soon so fast...
Well, it could be that--I am new to the art of spraying stuff with an aerosol can. I think that's got to be part of it, now that I think back--because that's when I first saw a big change between his head and unexposed parts of his body. However, I also see color changes (to a lesser extent) on his body, too, specifically on his hands and feet, which have been more exposed (he likes hanging out barefoot), and which I did not coat with MSC. Caro is made of luminous resin--the option Souldoll doesn't offer anymore. I think it may be exceptionally photosensitive. It really is a completely different material than my other Souldoll, Simon (Wizard Eckstine) is made of. Caro's resin is almost translucent and much heavier than Simon's. And I was pretty careless about sun exposure for the first month or so. ops: Sorry, Caro... Caro: Yo. I like my coloring. Makes me look more Azn  GJ: You wannabe, you... <snuggles>
Ah, it might be the resin to then... Souldoll pulled out that option rather fast, did they? Hopefully UV-cut should protect Caro from further colour changing. Caro is love.
I think Souldoll quit offering the resin because it was prohibitively expensive. They were importing it from a French manufacturer and the exchange rate changed... I remember reading big cautions on Souldoll's ordering page about exposure to the sun. But did I pay attention? No! I laughed! Ha ha! <sigh> Aw, man, Caro...don't listen to this. <claps hands over his ears> Caro: <whispers> She thinks I'm cool? <clears throat; uses deep voice> That's cool. Eh. Yeah. Thanks. <pause> Is she gone? <happy dance>
