Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - What It Does, How It Works, and Where To Get It

Sep 17, 2007

    1. PyxiStix - I think that deserves its own post, rather than to possibly get lost in this sticky. You should give it its own thread!

MaticProblem - I answered that a few posts above you. Please read ALL the posts before asking a question.

Hisomu - Thanks so much! I'll be adding that after I post this. :)

nichan - In the first post there is a name of an eBay seller that someone has successfully used to purchase Magic Erasers, and that will have to do for "online" sellers. I'm sure there are more eBay sellers. As for alternatives...not really. Where do you live? We've covered most of the Northern Hemisphere and quite a bit of the Southern Hemisphere, to be perfectly honest. Have you tried looking in the grocery store?

    2. I live in Indonesia...i think magic eraser isn't a trend, yet and I don't have any idea in my head what it looks like so I can find a substitute here (is it really like eraser? or sponge? or...)...I clicked several ebay links here but didn't work...I'll search again...
      Thank's Ophelia (^.^)

    3. You're right, we don't have Indonesia on the list. Do you have any big stores that have a lot of sections/things to buy? Try the cleaning products aisle, where you get the bleach and things like that. Maybe it looks/has a similar name to what is sold in Malaysia? I'm just throwing out ideas.

    4. I just purchased ones from Korea...I'm quite worry cause they sell it quite cheap for 10...usually, custom may assume this for resale...I actually need only some...but they smallest package is 10...I hope it's ok and custom allow it to pass...

I was about to purchase from US but it's too far...so, I'll try Korea first...I'll give the link when I'm succeed buying it...it's in ebay store...the brand is not like usual brand...I don't know the brand...(-.-)'''

We have aceware here but not in my town...perhaps, next time, I'll check out aceware when visitin bigger cities...

      Thank's Ophelia...

    5. Ok so im scared lol, i am getting my first bjd and i wanted to know how easily these thing take off color?

    6. I live in Indonesia. I got mine from Ace Hardware under the name Pro Clean Magic Block. It's around $3 i think. I also got one from $2 shop Daisho (since I can't read Japanese, I would ask my friend before post the name here)

    7. @Kirarashine: how does it look like in real? Is it soft? or hard-block like stationary eraser? (^_^)'''''... Daisho? where is it?...

    8. nichan : It's sponge but the texture a bit diffrent from original sponge because the chemical in Magic block. It look like Mr.Clear in my opinion. Although Mr.Clear work better than Pro Clean, but Pro Clean easier to get^__^

    9. Kirarashine - Thanks for helping nichan! I'm adding that to the first post now.

bjdnewbie - This has been covered, multiple times. Please read ALL posts in the sticky before asking a question.

    10. I've searched the thread but ouldn't find this. In France, you can find a similar product in Leclerc stores: Mamison Gommes Nettoyantes. They sell it by 3 and it's real cheap and so far it works just as well as the MrClean brand :)

    11. You can buy 'it works' exactly the same as Mr Clean Eraser from the internet in the UK qvcuk.com elsewhere in the world qvc.com
Very reliable website you can buy it in all sorts of sizes and packs.

    12. I purchased one(s) from microfiberkorea .
Just tried a while ago and it worked very well...

now that i have sponge seller who's willing to sell abroad but not MSC seller...haha...just wait until my MSC is running out...I hope i can find one in my country

    13. In the UK I bought my magic eraser from wilkinsons and asda both stock it - if you have not got them local you can buy them direct from JML website
They are brilliant for removing marks - just cut off a part of the foam like eraser add water and wipe off mark its really simple
      :D

    14. Poundland in the uk were selling blocks if magic eraser for a pound. Hence poundland lol. I'm not sure if every store is doing it or not but it's worth keeping an eye out for.

    15. in ebay: microfiberkorea (or microfiberskorea?) sell this...I don't know compared to mr. clean quality...but so far, it's ok..the price is low...if you have a lot of bjd and do a lot of face-up, his price may be suitable for you (^.<)

    16. thats true ^^ in any lil pound shop u get to find them for 1 or 2 pounds ^^ ( i stocked on a few last month ^^)

    17. Here in South Korea, it is called "Magic Block". I have searched for the information about it related with ball-jointed dolls and learned that using Magic Block in erasing your doll's faceup is useful but you need to be careful not to rub the face of the doll with Magic Block too strongly; it can leave scratches on the face of the doll. Many ball-jointed doll owners use "lacquer thinner" in erasing dolls' faceup.

    18. There is some debate over the health-issues that arise due to Mr. Clean's Magic Erasers.

Many people tend to experience a burning sensation where the Eraser comes in contact with skin. This is because the Eraser is an abrasive sponge with chemicals in it (it claims to be "non-toxic, as long as you don't ingest it," but true "non-toxic" materials should be safe if you ingest a small amount on accident). The eraser causes micro-abrasions in the skin, and the chemicals seep inside.

The chemical used in the Eraser that causes the burning, coughing, watery eyes, etc, when using the Eraser is formaldehyde (an embalming chemical). Formaldehyde has been linked to causing cancer (primarily in the nasal area, I believe), and so Magic Eraser is slowly being taken off the shelves in some areas. It is still being heavily advertised, however, so I'm sure we'll still see it around for plenty more years yet.

    19. I'd just like to correct that the 'formaldehyde' used in melamine sponges IS NOT the same formaldehyde as embalming fluid.

Some information from the Mr. Clean website:
      Hope that helps :)

    20. Thanks for all the info, OpheliaB, it really helps! I do have one question, though. In your post you said:

"Do not buy products that are "heavy duty"

I asked my mom to pick up a Magic Eraser at the store, and she did, but the box says it's a "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - Extra Power." There's a line on the box that says it has "concentrated cleaning power." Is this safe to use on a doll, or should I go back and buy the normal Magic Eraser?

I'm sorry if someone has already asked this question, but I looked through the thread and couldn't find anything.

    21. I don't know. I'd have to buy some more spare doll parts to test that out. In the meantime I'd just be safe and buy normal Magic Eraser. Target has nice boxes of their own store brand for very cheap, for example.

    22. I hope this isn't a silly question, but when you wet the sponge should the water be cold or hot?

    23. I dont think it matters :) But just in case, just cold ;3

    24. I use it with cold water, and I wouldn't have even thought to use it without water. O.o I've used it wet just fine on a white-skin Bobobie Elfkin body and every single mark came off great.

    25. The store I went to didn't have Magic Eraser in stock so I bought a generic kind instead. It said "Compare to.." and it was from a company called ScotchBrite. That should be okay, right? I didn't see any damage when I was finished using it but it did take FOREVER to get the old faceup off and I couldn't get all the blushing off. :/ I easily covered that up though with the new faceup.

    26. In the first post, Zagzagael notes that a WET Magic Eraser is best for faceup removal. I personally do not recommend it for full faceup removal, there are solvents that do a much better job and then you can finish the tricky spots with Magic Eraser if you really need to.

I also think I've said this like a gazillion times since the thread went live, that you really ought to go buy one of the recommended solvents in the relevant sticky rather than giving yourself RMI from scrubbing with a Magic Eraser.

As for cold or hot water, I don't think it matters, use what's comfy for you!

    27. Forgive me if this question has been asked somewhere already in the thread (I skimmed :sweat ) Has anyone noticed if there's a difference in how well a face up is removed if you get the "Extra Power" Magic Eraser vs. the "Original"? I wouldn't want the extra strength one to somehow ruin my boy's head with all that extra power or anything.... That would be my luck. LOL!

    28. Zethiel -- I haven't seen these Extra Power Magic Erasers. Are they the type with the extra blue scrubby thing, or...? Can you hook me up with some info? :)

    29. Yeah, they're the ones with the blue scrubby thing - of course I wouldn't DARE use that side on my dolls - I was just curious if the regular side of the eraser had any additional strength or if anyone's used that one and found it worked better on the doll-safe side (white side). They also have a wavy form to them instead of a rectangle and a bit of a textured pattern on the white side of the eraser.

    30. Yep, I covered that in the first post, there's nothing special about the white side, it's straight up foam. Just don't use the blue side! :)

    31. Does anyone know for Portugal of rom Spain ??

      Thanks .

    32. I find in France but as the AQUAPUR

    33. SOS! Halp! Same question. But, not seeing an answer for this one. I have a grey head Kalix doll that I just got through using Magic Eraser and rubbing alcohol for removing the old faceup. Now (wish I had my camera) parts of the face are really shiney and other parts are a layer of flakey white. My poor grey skin boy looks like he has flakey sunburn! I mentioned the shiney surface right?

    34. I'm a little confused. I know in the first post says that as long as they're of melamine foam is all right, as for the blue one you just can cut that part off but I bought this one:

Is it considered heavy duty? It also contains febreze (fresh scent meadows and rain) Is it safe to use it on dolls? I'm worried is strictly for cleaning bathtubs, sinks and that kind of thing. D:

    35. I noticed Mr Clean Magic Eraser at the Dollar Store in Denver, the box was less than $2.

    36. So I don't have alot of time here, and I quickly read the first post, but help me to understand: One can clean a doll with the Magic Eraser with water and this will remove personalized faceup?

    37. Okay, I must be doing something wrong because I bought a Magic Eraser to remove wig stains and it is doing nothing! The "eraser" is much too spongy and not abrasive enough to do anything. I tried it both wet and dry. Are you supposed to scrub really, really hard?

    38. Gnomie; it sounds to me like the sealant hasn't come all the way off, and that's what's causing the flakiness. Since a Magic Eraser is abrasive, the shininess is probably a result of rubbing the resin, in which case it will go away when you seal it again; he's probably just been polished! I'm pretty sure you don't have a problem, but if it really makes you nervous, post a picture (can we post pictures in this thread? Maybe just in the customizing forum...) and someone will be able to tell you what's up.

    39. I live in Taiwan and we don't get many American brands. I just went to the cleaning products area in our supermarket and something similar appeared in half a dozen different brands. I didn't get the cheapest or the most expensive...just something in the middle. That's usually the safest bet.

I've used it dry just to clean my boy's body and it does wonders.
Later I used it to scrub his faceup off.
At first I used it only with water and it took a lot of heavy scrubbing to remove the MSC and pastel colors. Like, fingers sore heavy scrubbing.
However, when I used it with Tamiya acrylic thinner, the acrylic paint and MSC came off really fast without much fuss. Tamiya acrylic is basically just isopropyl alcohol so it will remove a layer of skin from your hands if you don't wear gloves (yes I speak from experience).
