Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - What It Does, How It Works, and Where To Get It

Sep 17, 2007

1. I just found Magic Eraser in Denmark today for the first time! So should anyone else be interested, they have them in Silvan, and they're of the VILEDA brand!

2. I love this thread :D
I got a JML Magic Eraser last week, its soo good :D

And it worked wonders after todays photoshoot. Talani [Dark Cocori] had birdie poo on her, and I used the Wet M.E [i dont want bird disease :x] and she was fine :D
I didnt rub hard , just softly& circularly :B

3. Any ideas as to what chemical in these causes the chemical burns on skin that some have been reporting?

The MSDS seems to be only applicable to the foam used, which doesn't seem to have many problems by itself.

4. A friend of mine used this on her narin, and her elfdoll. She may have scrubbed too hard, but the narin lost his texture, and her elfdoll went shiny. or, shinier rather. I recommend using Winsor and Newton Brush cleaner, personally. We haven't had a problem with it yet.

5. Lyric, I don't wash my hands after using them, and I have no redness, etc after using them.
perhaps only certain people get burns and such.
I actually get more problems after having water on my hands [redness, itchiness, sometimes blistering]

OpheilaB, I have used a wet MagicEraser on DarkCocori. I saw no problems afterwards.I didn't scrub hard, just really lightly with circular motion.
There was no problems/lightness/shinyness/etc,
I'm not saying "yes this is fine on tan/dark dolls, go ahead and use it", just that *I* have had no ill effects on using it on a dark doll :)

6. I've got this crazy idea for a magic eraser and I'm not sure if it could cause the doll to deteriorate.
Now I've heard in another discussion about people stashing things in their dolls' heads because they're hollow and whatnot. Would it be safe to stash a few pieces of a magic eraser in the doll's head for emergency clean-ups or would it be better to just keep them in the doll's bag?

Oh, and is there anyway to get back your doll's original coat of sealant if you scrub them shiny? I'd really hate to have a shiny plastic-looking doll. Does stuff like that testors sealant or whatever it is bring back the doll's original texture?

7. Hmmm. I think it would be okay, but I've got dolls whose eyes and S-hook systems take up most of their heads. And I always bring a full Magic Eraser in the doll bag with me, because you can rip off little pieces if you need them, but if you need more than the little pieces you put in your doll's head, you're out of luck.

You would need to reseal the doll to restore that texture you want, yes.

8. So it’s a case of apply the magic eraser to clean- and then reapply some MSC to get rid of the shiny after effects of the magic eraser? Or is the reapplication of the MSC only done where necessary? ;.; As in, the magic eraser will not be abrasive enough for that unless you really scrub at it? (That probably has been asked before and a lot, so sorry about that.)

But anyway, just got myself some Magic Eraser and your advice here was great to read before I went and made a mistake with it. :coughs: Though now I’m wondering if we have any alternative in Ireland. I purchased mine online.

Still, thanks for this! =3 :aheartbea

9. Orin -- check around your shops for melamine foam and do let me know if you find it--it'd be a helpful addition! I have a friend in Dublin, I shall ask him if he knows.

As for the Magic Eraser, just use it very lightly, as lightly as possibly, and do not scrub unless it is on an uncoated part of the doll. Respraying MSC can get very tricky as you need to be good at it AND also be good at removing/reapplying eyelashes if your doll has them, because eyelashes and MSC don't mix, just as eyes and MSC don't mix.

10. Ack! I should have read here before ordering mine. I ordered a JML Magic Eraser off Ebay UK for under a fiver including postage. However I have also found a source for Pride Erase Away that sells them in 12 packs for a little over £15 including postage (Works out about £1.30 each that way). Not ordered any of those yet though. Just Google price search Erase Away.

11. Lyddia, is this in the UK or everywhere?

12. The white part will work the same, the blue is basically an ordinary sponge. You can cut it off, or just not use it, it wont damage your doll if you do use the blue side (To get off water or something) but it wont be much help cleaning.

Also, I'd like to point out that, at least in Canada, a no name brand now makes a product identical to the Mr Clean Eraser for about half the price! Whoot!

I've seen it in most grocery stores, the most recent being an A&P, but I've also seen it at Loblaws.

13. In Finland we have these too, like skumring told about Norway, fellow scandinavian country and propably us finns favorite border country. <3

In Finland we have two official languages (actually three, but nothrern natives are so distant minority, that they dont learn to the whole nation their language) swedish and finnish. And it ocurred to me when skumring talked about "svamps" that the word is identical to svedish word.
But as the finnish language is so young and limited, we dont have different words for all and everything (like pine and number six are the very same word!). One word meaning word sponge and the word mushroom are same.

So you can understand how funny it is to read a mommy forums about cleaning and they are talking about these things calling them "magic mushrooms".

Then to a real point in my posting. BE CAREFUL ! These sponges are like delicatest sanding paper - I took out a stubborn stain from our overpainted door and it took the whole layer of paint off ! The sponge will remove your safe coating and / or even makeup !

They are the wery best thing to remove the makeup with right cleaner, but it _is_ a delicate sand paper. If you clean your doll 10 years, daily with this thing, you might have changed features, maybe even sooner than that decade.

I have used this sponge to my doll and I think it is a really good thing, to remove dirt and old safe coatings (my doll was used one), laquerings, if you please, because between those layers might have got dirt and I didn't know how many of them were in my doll, and how they were made. Was the old layer removed well before coating again and so on.

14. They also have another magic eraser at dollar stores in the cleaning esile (Sorry my spelling is horrible). We use them a lot at my work. you may have to check to see what kind of foam it is but I'm sure it does fine.

15. o used one on my DZ Dark Elf Quinn and it lightened the resin a noticeable amount

16. MSC went so cloudy on my DarkCocori the other day, so I spent 8hrs
trying to scrub it away with the MagicEraser, Baking Powder, Dish Liquid, and a gummy eraser.
The colour stayed the same, so I'm pleased.
My rubbing alcohol came today, and it lifted the remaining MSC off with the M.Eraser in minutes, and I have noticed NO difference in colour, and I was scrubbing like a madman!*_*!
I'm not saying, "Yeah, scrub your Cocori with a MagicEraser for 8hrs straight", but it was ok for me, and no colour difference what so ever :)

17. I don't know if somebody's said this here already, but using non-acetone nail polish remover instead of water makes the process go a lot faster. As far as I know, doesn't harm the resin. And I repeat, NON-ACETONE! Acetone weakens the resin!!!

On a different note, another product that I like is the Scotch-Brite magic erasers. I noticed that nearly year ago somebody posted here that Scotch-Brite was squeaky and generally inconvenient...maybe they've improved their product?...because I bought a pack of Scotch-Brite magic erasers and they look considerably different than the ones pictured on page one of the thread.

But yeah, that's what I've observed that works.

18. I wanna ask is this a magic eraser? o_____O
Clicky~
I've never seen a Magic Eraser in real life before so I have no idea what it looks like
>_____@

19. Yep thats it :P it works as sand paper so its probably best not to yse it on tan skin O.o

20. Another option which may be safer is to use the magic erasure to apply the windsor and newton brush cleaner.
I do that whenever I have a stubborn face-up that i'm removing.

21. I hear that Magic Eraser can change the pigment of a tan doll, is this true? If so is it safe to use on a lilac doll.

22. do you need to rinse the doll after using Mr. Clean?

23. If you are using it dry, don't bother. If you've soaked the sponge in something, I would at least wipe the area off with a damp paper towel after you're done. :)

24. Sorry in advance for the stupid question.
I could not find Magic Eraser in the local stores, so I’m trying to buy in through the internet. =) They have a lot of products that looks like it might be what I’m looking for, but non of them says if it’s made of melamine foam or not. >.>
So’ maybe someone knows if any of these is the right thing?

Spong Block from Leekeworld

MAGIC BLOCK from Luts

25. ~~~~~

Yep! :)

26. I have been using magic erasers for a long time, because not only can you use them for dolls... but low and behold you can use them for cleaning too... hahahaha
I also use them to clean scuff marks off my white vinyl boots (which works perfectly BTW):fangirl:

With Resin dolls:
I have been using them to clean my girls since the beginning because i had them handy and read a couple places they were good for it.
The magic eraser cleaned marks left over by clothing, colored pencil marks, pastels and its residues and even acrylic paint(YES, Even acrylic paint).

If you get the eraser wet, then squeeze it dry to remove all extra water you can scrub away even the most hideous of stains(or bad face-ups). I used it wet to clean off even acrylic paint, because i made a error on one of the girls faces.

if you use it dry, you can lightly dab of mistakes or even blend your pastels around if you get them too blotchy(but be careful to not rub away your work!)

The only news i have about them is that in order for them to work better you do need to actually buy the Mr. Clean brand. The generic brands did not clean off the acrylic paint, and i had to scrub a lot longer to clean my girls.

I have found Mr.Clean erasers from anywhere to Fred meyer to wal-mart. I also found them online as well... So i am sure they are not hard to find. :):):)

27. Thanks for all the advice, this has been very helpful. :) Although, when I looked around my local Wilkinsons (I live in the UK), I couldn't see any. I'll have to keep looking!
Also, you should probably remove Woolworths fro the list of places to buy... seeing as Woolworths doesn't exist anymore. :( Damn you, credit crunch!

28. So the eraser can remove full face ups? How about Testor's?

29. Sorry about missing this. It is fine on my lilac Hanyuu doll. LadySaiyuki uses the same caster as Bobobie does, so the lilac is the same. No trouble at all.

30. I've found something at a store called Lidl (Netherlands, germany, Schotland, Croatia, Slovenia, England, Italy, Sweden, Norway(?) and more!)

Its a very cheap shop that hails from Germany, they have something called 'Aquapur 'wonderspons'' (Wondersponge), wich works exacly the same as Mr. Clean.. it even has a pink lil' sponge on top! (You can easaly remove this for better use)
It costst about 1 euro. (95 cents?)

You can also in holland get Balbo Wondersponge at: Halfords, Kruidvat, Blokker, Coop supermarkten, and probably more!

31. Hello, I do have two questions about Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. (sorry if they have already been asked)

1. Since you said that it takes off the sealer in the faceup, when you scrub the body, does the MSC come off?
2. Also if you use Mr. Clean and the doll becomes shiny, how can you take out the shine?

32. If you've sprayed the body with MSC, then yes, it will come off with repeated scrubbing.

The doll is shiny because the MSC has been removed. Spray some more.

33. I'd just like to add for UK resisdents Halford also sells magic eraser. It's called the big white sponge and has a picture of a great white shark on the box. It's in the car cleaning isle.

34. I've heard something about Mr Clean Erasers and smoothing doll hair...

35. I haven't. What have you heard, exactly?

Jacobean, I will add The Big White Sponge to the master list.

36. Just to add you CAN get a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser from the Philippines. My sister bought one here..am just not sure where she got it.

I'll ask where she did and post it here, just in case people want to know

37. This might have already been asked, and if it has then I'm sorry -_-;;;

If I use the Magic Eraser dry, do I need to rinse the doll to get rid of any chemical residue? And my Luts boy's body has never been sealed... Should I seal the pieces after I clean them or would it be alright to leave it unsealed?

38. You don't need to seal your boy's body. And yeah, I'd give him a rinse, not because of chemical residue necessarily, but because the magic eraser sheds little particles.

39. so the magic eraser should be able to get rid of the black line marks on my DOD?

i don't want it to leave a mark after i clean it

40. Only way to know is to find out. If it doesn't remove all of the mark, try some other methods outlined in other threads in this subforum.

41. OMG, i just received a 2nd hand PF Yoko and she has some wig stains on her head and around her eyes, I was kinda disappointed and thought i'd probably have to have her re-painted or something. But i read this thread and thought i'd try the magic eraser thingy. I actually have 2 of the scotch bright ones that i never used. I tried it very gently, espeacially around the eyes. And it worked like a miracle. I am beyond happy :) I got all the stains out without taking off any of her face up. Didn't even leave any shiny marks. Happy happy happy :)

43. Ok, so magic erasers DO remove yellowing? If so, that'd be fantastic! : D

45. Definitely. I dipped a small square into some 90% Isopropyl and gave a scrub to a fairly severely yellowed piece and most of it came right off. Let me stress that I wasn't giving it my all with the scrubbing, either. D:

46. I am sooo glad about this. Some clothes left a mark on my doll and I was distraught and I was wondering if the magic eraser would do the trick and then I saw this thread so I tried it. Works like a charm. Came off immediately.

I used it a little damp at first and then switched to dry and it worked perfectly. :D

47. Forgive me if this question has been asked before, but does Mr. Clean harm tan dolls?

48. I use Magic erasers since a long time in my house and since a few months in customize dolls (blythes and pullips), it's a fantastic tool !!

49. I have tiny little marks that look like "rub" marks and I'm not sure that I should use the eraser first or try something else less abrasive. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Pat

50. Patbrom,
There's not much that is less abrasive. Trust me on this one. If you really feel the need, you can try fine sandpaper (the higher the grit, the finer it is) but Magic Eraser is not going to accidentally sand off your doll's nose in under two minutes, I promise.

51. OKAY. so to clarify. you CAN use the magic eraser as a face up remover? Because I do have a head that needs a new face up and Ive read some bad stuff about nail polish remover.

52. Not sure why this needs clarification. I've said it before in the first post (quoting moderator Zagzagael on removing faceups with Magic Erasers, it's the first paragraph of Part 2) and others have many a time in many different ways too, but I will say it again for you.

You can indeed use a Magic Eraser to take off a faceup, but if you are not using a chemical like isopropyl alcohol in tandem, it will take a LONG time and lots of wrist pain to get a fully sealed faceup off. Please see the other stickies for faceup removal alternatives to nail polish remover.

53. Oh this is SO good to know! I'm getting a low end doll to practice creating faceups on and while it seems the jury is still out on vinyl, I'll certainly give it a try. One of my concerns was that I could end up damaging the doll's face and I didn't want to abuse her like that. I use Magic Eraser around the house because it cleans things normal cleaners can't and does it without damage. I've never had a problem with burning myself or removing finishes or paint. I've also never really seen much in the way of "dust".

54. Please do report back on how the Magic Eraser interacts with vinyl, Kirahfaye. I'd be so thankful to you if I can add that knowledge to the first post.

55. I'm a bit unsure of myself here. (and sorry if this questions been answered)
Is it absolute that Mr. Clean will be able to take off a face-up? Because thats what I'm thinking of using it for other than to clean.
There's people saying that it's possible but hard, or that it intirely removes it.
Which is which ><? or does it just vary?

56. Here in Chile you can find the "Esponja Magica Scotch Brite" 3M brand in Jumbo or Lider supermarkets.

57. All are offline store (TxT)...i wonder if there's an online store that would sell abroad...
is there any substitute for magic eraser?...
