Monah porcelain BJD - new face painting!

Feb 9, 2010

    1. She makes me smile every time I see her. So lovely. Hope the casting goes well. *u*

    2. Thank you Joankagami. It is so good to know she makes you smile
      thank you!

    3. Its been a while since I posted a commment :) She looks so fabulously amazing!! your hands were an inspiration to me getting mine just right - they are so beautiful. She is an absolute delight to look at and I cant wait to see her in porcelain :)

    4. Thank you whitewings! It's has also been a long time since I posted. I've been working on plaster molds and test firings. It looks like forever to finish her. But I'm enjoying the journey. =)
I've taken a look at your doll Alexis, she is also gorgeous!

    5. Wonderful!!!!

    6. Beautiful!!! Only suggestion is to make sure she has roundness on the front of her cheek area and the front of her forehead, as well as on the sides. She has a lovely, serene expression.

    7. Thanks for the advice divi, I'm glad you like her. โ™ฅโ™ฅ

    8. I'm so looking forward to seeing her test firings!! I've had no luck finding anyone locally that can fire porcelain.... the closest is a two hour drive away - so we're talking on the phone about future posibilities >.<

Do you have any sneaky preview pictures of her molds etc?

    9. Whitewings, I think I have fired 4 or 5 times already, but I wasn't 100% proud of any of them. It's taking much longer than I have ever imagined. I only hope to finally have my perfect doll soon... tomorrow I'll make new casts, refine and fire again...
I don't have pictures because I don't remember to take them, it's too much work.
I hope you will find a way to fire your porcelain soon (what a pitty we are not neighboors!)
      good luck!
      hugs, Tatiana

    10. What kind of clay did you start out with for the initial sculpting? I think she is one of the most beautiful detailed dolls I've ever seen. Her hands are amazing. My mouth fell open when I saw the picture of them.

    11. Hi Ktewinc, I always use ProSculpt polymer clay, it is my favorite! Thank you for your nice comment on my doll!

    12. Hello everyone!
I just wanted to post a quick update, my doll has finally become a porcelain doll... I have been working so hard. She is painted now and my next step will be stringing her.

Here is a picture of her parts in porcelain, but not painted yet:

    13. Congratulations on making such an exquisite porcelain BJD. :love

I took a look at your Flickr pictures and noticed that even though you modeled
your original doll in polymer clay, you still made a wax prototype. Did you find any
advantage in wax over polymer clay for refining your doll?

    14. Congratulations! I know you've been working on her a long time...she's wonderful. I can't wait to see one painted.

    15. kwmelvin: My polymer clay prototype was not smooth enough so I decided to make wax over polymer clay so that I was able to refine it much easier. Yes, I think wax is much better for refining than polymer clay!
      thank you for your comment!

Dianna: Thank you! She is painted already, but I will only show final pictures now, I am also anxious to know if you will like her painted as much as you like the unpainted doll!

    16. Congratulations tatiana, shes wonderful, cant wait to see her painted also!

    17. Oh, I'm so glad to see an update to this project and that you've managed to complete her. She looks beautiful, can't wait for the painted/strung photos. Congratulations!

    18. Thank you glimmer and crowtree! โ™ฅ

    19. Yay Tatiana - i am so excited for you!!! What a wonderful finish to such a labor of love - I really am looking forward to seeing her painted!! Best of luck with her next firings!!!

    20. thank you whitewings! yes it was everything as planned during painting firings! Now I am having a big headache about stringing her with the springs! but who said it would be easy? =)

    21. spring tensioning

I, for one, would be very interested in your design for spring tensioning. ;)
People have been spring tensioning dolls since the 1800s. :arrr
Some have even taken out patents for their spring tensioning designs. :p
However, I have not seen any designs worth patenting. :XD

BJDs are, for the most part, human shaped, with a torso, head, arms, and legs.
There are only so many combinations that you can come up with to place
springs, s-hooks, pins, and swivels inside those parts, to make them work. :dead

From what I've seen, so far, (mainly at the Enchanted Forum), the biggest
problem for spring tensioning a porcelain BJD is in finding springs small enough
to fit inside the limbs, especially at the wrist and ankle joints (for small dolls).
Most of those doll-makers have had to order custom springs, and they
are very expensive in small quantities (less than 1000).

Otherwise, it seems very straightforward to tension a porcelain BJD with
springs, s-hooks, pins, and swivels. The pins and s-hooks can be fabricated
from stainless steel MIG welding wire, which comes in small diameters, and
in small spools. Fishing swivels can be used for the swivels, and the springs?....
well the springs seem to be the big problem.

What is your experience? How are you doing in Brazil?
      :)

    22. kwmelvin: I find springs stringing to be very challenging and hard part of the porcelain creation, I've heard people have spent lots of money in springs until they find the suitable ones. Well, I am so glad my doll is not so tiny she will be 15 inches... it will not be difficult to find springs, and I have already found a big store in my country where I can buy all kinds of springs and I can eve order custom springs, so this will be no problem for me. The problem I think is calculating the right tension for every joint. It is so tiring! Well I will keep trying until I know every doll will have different spring designs because it depends so much on the size and diameter of each part to be strung... so I will keep trying until I find my design! thank you for your comment!

    23. Celebrating!

I am celebrating now that my doll is almost finshed! :))

    25. I sent you an e-mail to go on the waiting list :) Do let us know how the springs go..... I have no-one close by that can show me how to do it in person so I am very curious about the process!!

    26. spring tensioning a porcelain BJD

Industrial strength Extension Springs are used.
o\\\\\\\\\o <--a small, industrial strength extension spring. :)
S-hooks connect the springs to pins
      pin, S-hook, o\\\\\\\\\\o, S-hook, pin.
Martha A-H also incorporated fishing swivels in some limbs.

Here are some links from Enchanted which may help you design your spring tensioning system for your porcelain ball jointed doll:

Since each porcelain doll made by doll artists are slightly different, due to the design of the doll, shrinkage, thickness of cast porcelain, and so forth, no one can say: "Buy this exact spring, S-hook, and fishing swivel; then assemble it exactly in this way.". Each doll maker must figure it out for her own dolls.

      Hopefully helpful.
      :)

    27. Whitewings: thank you for your interest! Please take a look at kwmelvin last post which is the perfect answer for your request!

I researched and studied a lot of pictures, websites and yet my stringing design is totally different and unique - it's the same with every doll maker - because every doll is different.

    28. Thank you both for the links...... I'm still making molds XD I guess It will be about trial and error :)

    29. I think that if all the porcelain doll makers would share their spring tensioning designs, and share their sources for materials, such as springs, s-hooks, and swivels, then the whole porcelain doll making community would benefit, and spring tensioning a porcelain BJD would lose its big mystery.

However, since spring tensioning is shrouded in mystery, and porcelain doll makers are not as willing to share what they know with others, then each and every new porcelain doll maker is forced to spend hours, days, weeks, or months figuring it all out from scratch. Each doll maker must re-invent the wheel each time. :o

Perhaps it is some sort of initiation test? :XD

What if the resin BJD community was the same? The Joint wouldn't flourish and have this wonderful University atmosphere if no one was willing to share information with each other.
