Mome Raths Outgrabe - Cheshire Mini Project! Question Pg. 6?

Jul 27, 2007

    1. Oky-doky, here I go. ^^

SO. I decided I would try my hand at making my very own tiny out of Sculpey. ^^ And I wanted to make a thread to document my progress, and maybe get advice hither and yon.

When I was thinking about what kind of mini I wanted to make, I knew I didn't want him or her to look completely human. I wanted to do something a little bit...different. Ultimately, I decided on something that was...really pretty inevitable.

I decided to make a Cheshire Cat. XD' He's gonna stand at about 24 cms...and I'm calling him Julian after an original character of mine. <3

That's the sketch. XD' It's...not very good, and I know it, but I wanted to map it out. I want him to have suwarrico sitting abilities, and - if I can figure it out - double jointed arms.

Right now, I've started work on sculpting the head. I'm working on it solid first, then I'm going to freeze it, cut the headcap, and scoop out the inside slowly but surely. Once I have a more defined head, I'll post the WIP pictures.

      So...here's hoping!

    2. Mmkay! Since I submitted this thread, I've had some progress...but I've got some questions. (And for the curious, I'll take pics once I've fine-tuned the head a little bit more....)

Boiling Sculpey...is that a good method? I'm not sure how long to do that, or how to go about it. I've done some reading, but I need to look again...any advice?

    3. When I've used Super Sculpey, I've found boiling it works well. But I've never tried it with regular Sculpey.

    4. I've mixed Sculpey and Sculpey II...it has the same bake instructions regardless. How long do you boil a piece normally? And...how, exactly? O___o Would the hollow pieces collapse a little, or...?

    5. Mmkay, got some working pics of the head so far!

Sorry my pics aren't the best. XD'''''''''''''' Anyhow, it's going back in the freezer so I can do the other ear. Then I fine-tune the grin and bake it...then sand the heck out of it.... XD'''''

    6. It's coming along nicely hun!

    7. Thanks much, dearheart. ^^ <33333 Can't wait to have the head done enough I can bake it and start on the body....

    8. Doing much more work today - going to try and get the head done enough that I can cure it. ^^

I've got the other ear on, but it needs shaping. ^^' It's not quite as wide as the other one.

    9. O.M.G.

I am a total convert now when it comes to boiling Sculpey.

All I did was boil some water and then pour it into a pan with Julian's head for a couple minutes...and he's in great shape. <33 I might do a bit more to be sure, but I'm not sure he needs it...we'll see when he's cooled.

    10. Went ahead and boiled some more. ^^ I have a question now, though -

How do people recommend sanding down the eyewells WITHOUT a Dremel? ^^' I'm slowly going at it with fine files and a very fine sanding sponge.

    11. Couple of small hitches today - one ear broke off and there was some minor cracking near his temple. I'm doing some repairs now and I'm still working down the eyewells. XD' Got one about set.

    12. Julian suffers so much! *dramatic tears* At least progress is being made. ^^

    13. Indeed, indeed. XD' <3 I'm working on patching up the thin bits and preparing Sculpey to start the body....

    14. I can't wait to see what he looks like when he's done - and it's super cute to me that you're naming him after your tabby-guy in IoDM XD;;

    15. Thanks -

Hey, WHOA, I did NOT expect anyone to recognize him... XDDDDD What's your Gaian name!?

    16. He's wicked cute! Can't wait to see him finished!

    17. Syrie. *whistles*

    18. *wants*

Thats as coherent as I get. It's amazing.

    19. DUDE! HI, Syrie! XDDD Duh, I should have known. XDDD I knew you had darlings of your own. <3

      Wolfie: Thanks! <3333

nekokatechan: **Flattered** D'aww. <333 Thanks! I don't even have much up there yet! XD''''

    20. Very interesting, can't wait for the head to be finished. That cat alwats gave me the chills when I was younger. :)

    21. Thank you! ^^ I'm going for a slightly darker variation than the Disney version.......but.....

Not gothic-lolita-Alice-Chesh, either. If anything, closer to steampunk, but....probably pretty modern.

    22. I love your concept. "The Jabberwocky" is one of my favorite poems.
You've got a really nice start on him!

      "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!"

    23. Wow, lots of posts in here lately. <333

Thank you! It's probably my favorite poem, myself. <333333

    24. *chuckles* Heh, no worries Lady V - It's not like my screen names MATCH. *not that smart* Anyhow, can't wait to see it, srsly!

    25. Totally Off Topic: Mome Raths Outgarbe, is it supposed to mean something?
I never found out if the cat was speaking backwards or something else. lol
Do you plan on staying with the Disney's Chershire cat's color theme?

    26. XD Thanks, hun.

Manda-Chan: [jabberwocknerd] No, not TECHNICALLY, but it's widely speculated/explained upon that Lewis Caroll made up many of the words in Jabberwock. 'Mome Raths,' for instance, MIGHT be the shadow underneath a sundial...but we can't really verify. ^^'[/jabberwocknerd]

And no. XDDDD I'm going for a gray tabby kinda theme. ^^ <333

    27. I love Alice in Wonderland!! I can't wait to see him finished <3 What does boiling do, btw?

    28. OMG looking really good i cant wat to see it done. is it a boy or a gril

    29. ab_rowin: I'm under the impression that's it's a guy, because the OP refers to the doll as a him.

    30. I love it, such attitude. I can't wait to see what it looks like finished.

    31. He reminds me of the Cheshire Cat from American McGee's Alice. ^_____^

    32. good luck.. you got a cute start with it

    33. Xyria - Thanks! It's another way to cure the Sculpey, is all. ^^ Without baking it on a pan.

      blur - Thanks! <333

-cain- - I'm kinda happy to hear you say that - he's my favorite Cheshire Cat design I've seen around. <3333 He's spiff. But this little guy is LOOSELY based on him...and mostly based on a character of mine. ^^

      heavenchick - Thank you! ^^

    34. Finish that second eyewell yet deary?

    35. Still refining it. ^^' It needs outer sanding and a bit of patchwork for the chip....

    36. Again, Chesh just gets so much abuse. ^^'''''

    37. Wow, that dolls going to be awesome finished!

    38. That he does, Thesta, that he does..... XD'

      Thanks, Satsuki! <3

    39. *shifty eyes* Vin needs to update her progress as Thesta was spacey and forgot to ask her if she'd been working on it or not.

    40. Wow, what a very interesting idea!!! Good luck!!

    41. I do. XD' I might do some sanding today, and if I do, I'll take a few new pics. <3

      Thanks, Snitter! <3

    42. *prods* You told me last night you were mixing sculpy or the body.

    43. I did. <333 I've been hanging around, but now I'm working out the torso mechanics and the armature. I want to joint in the tail, I'm just trying to work out the best way to string it in....

    44. Tails are tricky little devils. *nods*

    45. Indeed they are.

**Blinks down at sig** .....Finally, hm? <3

    46. *grumbles* Still waiting on Paypal.

So what do you think of a magnetic tail?

    47. Not a bad idea at all. <3 I wanna do a jointed tail for Julian, mind you, just because with the way I am I'd be knocking the magnet off every three seconds. XD''''

    48. Magnets are lurve. ^^

    49. Magnets hate me. XD'

    50. So do a lot of things, but that never stopped you before. It is usualy things you love most that cause the most problems. ^^ *ish to early to make a truly witty remark*

    51. Ooh, I'll be watching from the sidelines for progress, Lady V!

    52. Thanks! <3333

Working on the armature tonight. <3 There's a side project I'm gonna be doing on the side, actually, too, while Julian-parts are in the freezer.... >.>

Hint - It's a Silent Hill creature that isn't represented very often.

Unfortunately, it doesn't suit the rules of this forum, so it won't get it's own thread, but maybe I'll poke a picture up in here during one of my dry spells to prove to y'all that I'm keeping busy. XD'

    53. Hurray for armatuers!

    54. Indeed. XD''''' I hate making them, but they're a necessary evil.

The other mini-doll is just gonna be play, really..... ^^

    55. ...Mmkay, so the armature is totally not working as I'd like. XD'''''' Tomorrow I'm gonna go for broke and try another method entirely. XD''''' If it works, I'll have a basic top and bottom very soon....

    56. I've got a very very rough body and armature done. It'll be going in the freezer in a minute or two. ^^

    57. Get pictures of rough armatuer and Julian's head!!! *flails*

    58. **Sighs**

If I don't before I put him in the freezer, you're gonna eat me over the phone, aren't you? XD'

    59. Most likely. ^^

    60. I thought as much. XD'

Well, I got some pics. They're not the best, but they're a good idea. SO. I'll reencode and upload some. XD'
