Moldmaking Mold box materials

Aug 13, 2015

    1. So far I've seen mold boxes for casting being made out of acrylic sheets, plywood and legos. However I'm going to need between 5 and 8 tiny boxes (with the longest edge being 10cm, and most between 4 and 7), so I'd figure the easiest and cheapest solution would be 5mm thick cardboard. Is this a good idea? Will it soak up the moisture from the silicone? Maybe there's something else that can be used for box building?

I considered making a one big mold for all the parts, but they differ so much in size and thickness I'd end up using twice as much silicone, risking falling short... Though honestly it still might be better than having to cut out 40 small pieces with a fretsaw :sweat

EDIT: Okay, seems like I found the answer after all, as seen in this tutorial, Oomoo hardens normally in a cardboard box, so that's a big relief.

    2. I have had success with 1/4" foam board, and that is what I always use. I cut it up and assemble the boxes with a hot gle gun along the seams. Once the box is built I also run the glue gun along the inside of the seams (inside the box) so there won't be leakage.

After I have poured the rubber for the first 1/2 of the mold, t take the box apart by pulling. When it's apart I take out all the clay, clean the rubber, then flip it over & re-assemble the box around it, again using the glue gun. I fill any gaps with puddles of the glue. Then I pour the second half of the mold, after of course making the holes out of clay for the eventual resin pour.

      Hope this helps.
