Wearables Mohawk Wig!

Feb 19, 2015

    1. Hello everyone! Hopefully I am posting everything correctly, I still have no idea what I'm doing.

A few days ago, I finally received my Doll Chateau Cyril which I had intended to turn into one of my characters. The problem here is that my character has a mohawk, which isn't exactly a common thing for doll wigs. I realized that I would have to make my own. I practiced making wigs, ending up with a brown yarn wig (which was pretty adorable actually) and some sort of confusing blonde thing that I pretty much regret. I finally decided to grow a pair and try to make a proper wig. It's not perfect, but I am pretty excited about it! I was wondering if anyone had any advice on things I might have done right, or ways I can improve for the future.

I ended up really enjoying the whole wig making thing, despite the fact that I have little to no idea what I'm doing.

Anyways, thank you for taking the time to look!

    2. This looks so great and very realistic! Are you planning on gelling it and making it stand up?

    3. Yes!! I might make a second wig similar to this just for standing up, because I'm a bit nervous about trying to wash it out afterwards... Thank you so much, by the way!!

    4. I've read on many forums that people use white glue to make their real mohawks stand up, so you might keep that in mind if the gel isn't strong enough or makes the hair gross. There are washable white glues, so if you don't like it you can rinse it out and restart.

    5. Oh yes! When I had a mohawk I tried that, but it actually didn't work that well for me. it might be that mine was too long or something. I was thinking about using aquanet hairspray, because if i covered the lower portion of his head it might be fairly easy to comb/wash out, and that stuff holds like nothing else I've seen in my life. The only thing I'm worried about is the wig coming apart. I used e6000 to stick it all together, and i dont know how that stuff holds up with washing. I should make a test wig and try it! Anyways, thank you for the good advice! I will try it!

    6. I love it, it looks awesome and very realistic!

    7. Oh wow its one of the best Mohawk wigs I have ever seen, amazing work, if this is the result when you just started, cant wait to see what will come out after some practice, yet you can totally sell wigs like this one

    8. I really love how well you did the short hair. How hard was it to get it all trimmed evenly?

    9. This looks great! I love that you got the short part to look good as well as the long part, it seems like that would be difficult to do.

    10. Wow, looks great, and the short hair looks super realistic!

    11. He looks great with the Mohawk.

    12. Oh wow! I really LOVE that wig! You made the shorn side look completely believable. From what I see, you did a spot on job with the hairline, that's where it coulda gone soooo wrong, but yours is sooo very right.

    13. Hey that looks really neat! I love the way you've done the short hair!

    14. Wow!! That looks so amazing. Like a lot of people already said, the sides look so believable. That had to be difficult. Good job!!!!

    15. Those sides are amazing! Never seen someone get the sides that short that well. It looks very natural!

    16. This is an absolutely amazing wig! :D it fits the Cyril sculpt so well too >w>

    17. Have to agree with all the comments. this is an amazing wig. Would love to see it styled and to know how you got such a realistic shaved side.

    18. That is just AMAZING I really LOVE it :) you should make some more and sell them?

    19. That looks fantastic! It honestly does look real, it's nearly the same style I had a few months ago.
Hopefully it'll spike well, mine never did :<

    20. This is mad cute and really well done, would you ever consider doing a tutorial? I'd love to cut some wigs shorter but I am not exactly a talented hairstylist. Also Cyril's such a handsome dude! I know this post is a bit old so you may have found a better solution by now, but I had some thoughts.

My first suggestion for getting it to stand up would be products for synthetic wigs. From what I've noticed, the hairsprays tend to have a stiffer hold than sprays meant for human hair. I got mine from wigs.com, but I do have to say that some of their products have a strong odor. It goes away after a bit but my dude reeked like a Regis salon for like a week after so it might not be the best thing if you're sensitive.

If that doesn't work or you aren't into the rank smells of most alcohol-based hair products (why do they do that? yecch), what I used to do for my actual mohawk was rub in a small amount of Joico ICE Spiker and carefully blow-dry my 'hawk upside down on the no-heat low setting (which would probably be way easier and less headrush-inducing for a disembodied doll wig) and then finish it off with TIGI Rockaholic Fun Times hairspray (comes in a big bright orange canister.) There's also a Japanese hair product called GATSBY Moving Rubber that works really well. The strongest hold comes in a dark pink tub, there's a Japanese grocery near me that has it but you could easily get it online, probably from Amazon or direct from their website. As a bonus, both of those things have pretty light scents (the GATSBY kind of smells like Japanese apple-flavored candy.) Wax or glue first, careful blow-drying with no heat and then spray as a finisher was always what worked best for my real hair, but everything is very dependent on stuff like humidity which can ruin your whole plan.

In general I don't know what the long-term effects are of human hair products on synthetic wigs, but I guess that's what wig shampoo is for.

I hope this ramble is useful to someone!

    21. This is wonderful. I love it a lot!

    22. You did a really good job laying the hair for the shaved sides.

    23. I know some people use wood glue. You could also try a deathawk look, of course, which requires a lot less product (from IRL experience, mine could pretty much old itself - a bit of hairspray was more for making it last a few days...)

What materials did you use, by the way, and do you have any links to tutorials? I need to make my punk boy his 'hawk eventually.

    24. Totally inspired!

    25. The whole thing is seamless! It looks so great! Any tips to achieve this look? This is beautiful work :)

    26. (I broke it, I don't know how replies work, kill me)

That is extremely helpful!! I hadn't thought of trying synthetic products on the wig, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it. I hadn't even thought about humidity and the weather being a problem... Where I live, it is incredibly dry almost all the time, so I never had a problem like that with my own hair in the past, it completely slipped my mind that that was a thing!!

I was thinking about trying glue, but finding something not water soluble that wouldn't leave weird white bits on the hair is a bit tough. Maybe I'll see what happens if I use the e6000 for that as well.

...In other news, I'm gonna take your advice for my own hair when I cut it again. I hadn't even heard of GATSBY!

Anyway, I'm gonna remake this wig soon, and I'll try to make a tutorial. I am the WORST hair stylist, like, very very bad. So if I can do this, you can do it ten times better. Thank you!

    27. Wow it looks so realistic! I love the way the shaved sides look :D Fantastic job!
