Jul 28, 2013

    1. Ah, sorry. I don' follow the careers of ponies, bears, or the strange floating box o' fries on CN....

A grasshopper hops into a bar. The bartender says, "Hey, we've got a drink named after you!"
The grasshopper says, "Really? You've got a drink named Steve?"

Oy. What's the maximum number of characters in a post?
Lessee... I have to remove two faceups and redo them. I have at least 6 heads sitting around like mushrooms waiting for faceups and get put into the does-it-match/fit game for the available bodies. The clothing and wig stashes need full reorganization, and a lot of the clothing needs ironing too, since when I move doll bodies during hurricane season, I use the clothing as padding, and since I still haven't gotten around to doing this after last year's climatological festivities, I might as well leave it until after this year's hurricane season. Then I'm still looking for a missing BF foot that's somewhere in the house....

Doll plans as in buying? It depends on what wins the toss - of course, at this point, I have to use one of those D&D dice. A two-sided coin just isn't enough.

Nobody thinks in terms of hours. It's just dealing with one thing after another, both in conceptual and nuts-and-bolts realms, until the whole thing becomes presentable. Being involved in this kind of planning for the first time is very daunting! However, I haven't done near as much as some quite magnificent members of this team--

Armeleia is the one to answer that. Personally, I would love to have a black or dark blue t-shirt with a DOA design someday!

1 - I've heard bits and pieces about the WAY-back beginning, but I've only been here since 2006. Don't know about reception. I just stuck my nose in and started participating. It is strange, though, to check posts from that time and realize there are so many familiar names you don't see posting any more. In SF/media fandom, you got used to people gafiating on to other interests after a couple of years, and you just lose touch with them. But in this type of forum, the past is sort of kept alive and present.

2 - Dunno. But immortality would definitely be involved! So would the ability to fly. But it's no use having wings unless you also have the ability to keep the feathers in working order, so I guess a griffin would be more practical than a Pegasus.....

3 - SO many....Avatar, Bladerunner, Demolition Man, Forbidden Planet, the Alien/Terminator/Riddick series -- LOTS!
Anime - I've loved TONS. But all-time favorites (even if the hands-on animation wasn't as good or consistent as the later CG stuff) has to be the ones to which I've given up some of my personal space for large numbers of their animation cels and sketches - Weiss Kreuz, Generator Gawl and a real oldie/oddity, Patarillo!

4 - Oh yeah. Bleach - Renji Abari, Keisuke Urahara (and would have had a Yoruichi if FL's new tan had been darker). There's a temporary Naruto Shippuden Gaara here, and am considering at least one more from that show - I love what they did with the grown-up characters and designs. And one or two other favs from elsewhere are in the works....

      1. It's still 42. Ford Prefect said that's probably still the right answer. He went to check. He'll be back in 400 years, more or less.
      2. Yes, indeed. I would love one of her, but without the moose antlers! That's too big a responsibility to get to a meet with and back intact!

    2. Well firstly thank you for loving DoA! It means a lot that people enjoy the place and want to keep coming here :)

      1) I wasn't in the hobby during the Yahoo! Group and DoA the VBulletin forum was already a few years old by the time I joined, and when I became a moderator I think the majority of the original moderators had retired and moved on to pastures new.

      2) Are werewolves mythical? They are now. I've always wanted to be a werewolf, but a Terry Pratchett or Twilight style one that can shift between forms whenever I wanted, not a poor legendary loupgarou type that has to obey the phases of the moon. That would be less cool.

      3) I am a huge Star Trek fan from the old days when it was definitely not cool to be into Star Trek or even sci-fi in general.

      4) No, I don't. I did have a thought that I could just have a doll for cosplay and dress them up as different characters, but every time I tried that they ended up with their own personalities and didn't stay as a blank slate.

      1. 42!

      2. Yeah :) I really love DC Alberta, the only thing that is slightly weird is that she has human feet and not hooves. I was so close to buying an Ada, but when I saw how tiny she actually is I decided against. I'm not really good with the super tiny dolls.

    3. 1) Who are the pioneers who started Den of Angels? How was the reception when you first started?

Den of Angels existed as a Yahoo Group first, I was not a part of that but I know a few people that were around for that. The forum was started by Aimee Major Steinberger in 2004, I still remember the names of some of the original/early Mods: Cassiel, Hitasura, gothiclibrarian, Fyredancer, Rhian, Zalem, Suzuka, Deb, nikita, nikittin, Kellyhime, but very few of them were still on staff by the time I joined the team.

My reception to the team? I can't really recall. I just remember getting to work, clearing out threads with dead links and images...

(interesting fact, the forum's first owner was named Aimee, and the forum's current owner armeleia is also an Aimee, makes for confusion and is quite the coincidence)

2)If you can be a mythical creature, what would you be and why?

I think I'll go with being a sphinx, I was fascinated with them as a kid and would draw them all the time.

3)What is your favourite sci-fi movie or anime?

I am not good at picking one of anything!

My favorite fav Sci-fi movies: Bladerunner, Inception, Dark City, Until the End of the World, 28 Days Later, Strange Days, 12 Monkeys, Mad Max, The Fifth Element, eXistenZ, Children of Men, Looper, The Road, Source Code, Moon, the Aliens franchise, and Pacific Rim. I haven't seen Cloud Atlas or Melancholia yet, but I'm sure they'll join my list.

Favorite Sci-Fi Anime: Evangelion, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Saikano, Trigun, Wolf's Rain, Gurren Lagann, Crest of the Stars, Full Metal Panic, Planetes, Casshern Sins, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Towards the Terra, Ergo Proxy, Please Save My Earth, Alien Nine, Noein, Giant Robo, Now and Then Here and There, Battle Angel Alita, Silent Moebius, and all things Harlock related.

4)Do you have any doll based on a movie/anime character?

No, I only make dolls of my OCs.
I am hoping to shape my character Edel's look as he grows up based on what I like about Kiyo Kyujo's Zone 00 character Ango Shima. And I have a character planned that will take his visual queues from a mix of characters from Usamaru Furuya's Lychee Light Club and Pet Shop of Horror's Count D.

      1. What is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything?

      My co-mods got this covered.

      2. Do you think moosetar when you look at Doll Chateau Alberta/Ada too?

I hadn't, but now I will. It does make me think I should try to spot one in Spirited Away, I could so imagine one hiding in there someplace.

    4. Dear lovely mods, what is the color of your panties? (Or boxers if you prefer.)

    5. Dear Mods

What is your weapon of choice for the zombie apocalypse?

    6. Dear lovely mods, what is the color of your panties? (Or boxers if you prefer.)

I hope this question doesn't keep you up at night. >__>

What is your weapon of choice for the zombie apocalypse?

I'd hope for a small pistol with a silencer and a compound bow.

    7. 1. Aimee and a few others, I wandered in shortly after it was all started up so I don't know all the details
      2. Kappa. I love swimming and eating cucumbers and its a water demon that looks like a turtle with a bowl in its head...
      3. Recently, the various Riddick movies, but I love sci-fi in both anime and movie form so it's an answer that will change from moment to moment.
      4. Nope, though my boy Toshi has a faceup based off Japanese singer Amano Tsukiko

      1. 42.. now where did I put that towel...
      2. No, I think 'klepto moosie!' thanks to Cathym's Ada, Rei the klepto moose

.... umm okay? Today is domo boxers

      That was random

      Oldskin Volks SD13 boy

    8. HA! Well, we did say ask us anything. Bright orange.

In the short term? idrisfynn with a small pistol and a compound bow. Long term: some sort of aerosol anti-zombie Double-stranded RNA Activated Caspase Oligomerizer.

      ~

Here's a question for my fellow mods! :D
What is your Keirsey/MBTI personality type?

    9. Dear mods I have two questions :)
      1. If you could change one thing about the hobby, what would it be?
      2. If you could give everyone on DoA a doll-related gift for free what would it be?

    10. Dear mods: Is there any one doll that you would snap up instantly (no waffling - just a "take my money" moment) if you found it or it was re-released? If so, which??

    11. Idrisfynn answered the pioneering part well:
There was also Biscuitbear in the first round. Hitasura and Kellyhime came later... around the time of Hitasura, there was also Junkets, celticgeekess, and Zagzagael. The forum was originally a Yahoo!Group, but when it outgrew that, Aimee Major offered to host the site because she had a bit of web space. At that time, hosting DoA wasn't a big deal at all! When we started outgrowing server after server though, that was an issue... ;) We have had a total of... I think 6 server moves, including a time where we were hosted by Cosplay.com!

I first started as a mod in October of 2005, when the forum was just about a year old. The reception was fine, but I was a bit intimidated by the rest of the group. Not because they were intimidating, but because I was really pretty shy. But they were all very nice to me and I was happy to meet them.

      2. I think I would be a sylph, a substanceless creature of the air. Or, if I had to choose an unfriendly mythical creature, I would be a will o' wisp.

      3. I'm really bad at picking superlatives. I really enjoyed the Star Trek movies (the original ones and then the reboot, though I didn't see the newest one) and I loved the most recent adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I also liked the Aliens movies (though not Prometheus) and I loved Pacific Rim.

      4. Nope! All my dolls are original characters. :)

      1. The obvious answer is 42. The less obvious answer is green and misery.

      2. Yes.

      Blue with whales and hearts.

      Lawn mower.

This time I was INFJ, but it seems to alternate between INFJ and INTJ.

      1. I would get rid of the recasting issue.
      2. I would give everyone a nice pair of urethane eyes in the color of their choice. I just love urethane eyes and I think they make dolls look so self-aware! I think people would really enjoy them.

Before I had a house, I think I would have had an instant-purchase doll. However, my expenses are so much higher now that I can't really make those split-second decisions anymore... and honestly, I don't even know what would tempt me like that anymore that I don't already have.

    12. This is an original question. They're actually Moomin-print!

I think range weapons are quite important, but also something you can carry long distances without getting tired. I think a lightweight halberd would do nicely for chopping off zombie heads at a distance and could also be used as a walking stick or pole to tie your belongings to.

Well, I just took the test and I got "Idealist Counselor (INFJ)" Is this good? :s

      1. The obvious is to remove recasting. It's horrible practice and the people who defend it are foolish for thinking there's no harm in it. The financial backing (to purchase up legit dolls to be copied) is pretty huge when you sit down and consider how many sculpts are being recast from original high-value dolls. It is so unlikely as to be ridiculous that the initial funding to begin an activity like recasting was generated completely lawfully. You're not buying a cheap doll, you're buying into crime.

      2. I would give everyone a pair of fabulous shoes. Finding well-fitting doll shoes can sometimes be a pain, especially if you want a specific kind of shoe.

If the Volks/AL Unoss body was re-released or available as an option for FCS I would be all over it.

    13. 1. No recasts. It's done so much soul-sucking damage to so many people in a hobby that just supposed to be fun and creative.
      2. A piece of custom jewelry for their favorite doll.

La Legend des Temp Ludwig, when he finally gets released. Or a white SDGraffiti F-33 when Volks finally adds that body to FCS. I don't really have money for dolls anymore and I don't have credit cards, so the instant purchase idea is kind of a fantasy anyway. The last doll I said I'd snap right up still took me a year and a Christmas bonus before I could buy her.

ETA: I'm always an INTJ (rational mastermind) no matter which version of the test I take. No one type is better than another, Jes, it's just a way of illustrating your preferred modus operandi.

    14. Jescissa always good to know I own the same pants as a DOA mod :D

I love this thread, it's so interesting to read your answers. I especially like the DOA history, I recall a few of the original mod names

      some questions;
      1. what is your favourite meal/cuisine?
      2. Do you prefer to be too hot or too cold?
      3. Would you rather have hair for teeth or teeth for hair?

    15. I can't say I've ever watched MLP ^^; Sorry! I'm a bigger fan of HBO series or anime in general... I've grown old and boring so most of the time my entertainment is just the news. .____.

uhhh... a joke...a joke... I feel like the most serious person on the planet. My jokes only seem like depressing cynical comments on the state of the world!

^u^ So good to see someone doused in Anniversary spirit! I'm really happy to hear that you find DoA a home :)! It is very much one for me as well. I started in 2007, but had lurked a few years before that. I wasn't aware of anyone really, as staff members at the time. I much more spent my time devouring all the information I could find about dolls on DoA. XD... The reception was wonderful, for me. It was a really strong community atmosphere, with talented members everywhere! When I just was learning to paint dolls, I also received a ton of great advice from random members who had gone through the motions. :) I'm the type to research everything before posting any questions I have, so it was really great to get more detailed input via critiques. ^u^

You mean I'm not already a mystical unicorn? D: ....

Sci-fi eh... Probably Evangelion. I just LOVED EVA-01's design and the detail/insanity of the story. STILL love it. I think the Eva designs are some of the most graceful and cool bot designs I've seen.

Sadly, I don't have any dolls based on movies/anime characters, since mine are mostly all original characters.. I'd love to make a Kakashi [sorry, I'm a shameless fangirl] doll though, a really badass one..XD

My, my, the team is so in tune on this one! 42, definitely. XD

I have no idea what moosetar is, but Ada/Alberta inspire a grand question mark in me. DC's style is so whimsical! I love looking at them, but I don't think I'd ever own one.

Today is the day of orange panties!

Probably my two best friends, since they play zombie games to the nth degree and know their way around an apocalypse! If not... A scythe would be nice.

I'm a rational mastermind; INTJ. It's pretty accurate, right down to my romantic style O___o

I would also change the recasting issue. It's absolutely poisonous and is killing the hobby, imo. I'm really afraid that if it continues this way, companies will just give up. I always just feel like apologizing to the legitimate sculptors, tailors, painters, etc... because as hobbyists it is our responsibility to protect this wonderful world of bjds. Recasting is a huge slap to the face to the whole hobby.

:) I think if I could give everyone a gift, it would be a true understanding/appreciation of the doll artisan in business. I think all else could follow, after that basic notion.

8U Not really... I'm extremely hard pressed to spend my money. I usually am the type to say no to something if even a little bit is bothering me. I love Hijikata [who doesn't?] but I doubt I could ever justify the spending. Clothing, however, is an entirely different story. XDDDDD

oh god, please don't ask me to choose. I love SO MANY TYPES OF FOOD :...(

I'm never too cold, but always too hot! I'd much rather be cold! Cold can be solved by fires, hot chocolate, sweaters, socks, blankets, etc... And really, as a Canadian, I can handle my cold without most of those things. XD

UHMMMM... Hair for teeth. Like a whale :D Because teeth for hair just sounds terrifying and I wouldn't know how to style it.

    16. What is your Keirsey/MBTI personality type?

I usually test as an ENFP (Extraverted Intuition with Introverted Feeling), aka the Idealist Champion.

      1. If you could change one thing about the hobby, what would it be?

I guess I can't be surprised we all agree on this one, recasts. I miss the days when the worst divisive dramas in the hobby revolved around hurt feelings rather than theft. Nobody knows who they can trust anymore, there's way more anger and fear. I don't think any of us hoped for more of either of those things in a hobby.

      2. If you could give everyone on DoA a doll-related gift for free what would it be?

I would gift every one a pair of urethane eyes, I love them like I love opals. I think I'll be more specific and say I'd gift Mystics or Vings.

Is there any one doll that you would snap up instantly (no waffling - just a "take my money" moment) if you found it or it was re-released? If so, which??

Actually, I just did this... soon I will have the White Luster "Sylva" head I missed the sale of several months ago.

      1. what is your favourite meal/cuisine?

I love anything that comes in dumpling form, any kind from anywhere in the world. Gyoza, momo, samosa, all kinds of dim sum, vareniki, knish, pierogi, ravioli! As far as cuisines of the world I eat more Japanese, Thai and Indian food when I go out. But I am also a sucker for a great burger and fries.
I am the least fussy eater I've ever known, I'll try anything and in a group I'm always the guinea pig. >__<

      2. Do you prefer to be too hot or too cold?

Too cold, that's why I moved from SoCal to San Francisco. I can always put on more layers and sit under a blanket.

      3. Would you rather have hair for teeth or teeth for hair?

Oh the mental images!! Yeah, teeth for hair freaks me out. Talk about a curb-stomping nightmare. But then, hair in my mouth makes me gag. If I think of it more like baleen it's okay. So hair for teeth.

    17. I should have said "change one thing APART from recasts" because the recast thing is just super obvious and of course would be the thing to change :doh

    18. Sometimes the obvious is important to state. Loudly! :)

    19. amended: "change one thing APART from recasts" ?

If I had the power to change one thing aside from the recast issue (and in this statement let me pretend the issue didn't exist), I would make people stop comparing their own dolls to everyone else's as a way of measuring themselves within the community.

    20. Ooh ooh ooh I got another one!

I'm pretty sure we've all had moments of "OMG THAT IS SO COOL" and moments of "Okay shut up before I slap you with a king salmon" and moments of "this is going to drive me up the wall screaming" in our time on this forum, and you guys have probably had more of the latter two than most. However. Have you, in your tenure on DoA (modly or otherwise), had one moment stand out as a Crowning Moment of Funny? (Yes, that is a TV Tropes link. No, I am not sorry. Muahahahahahahaaaa!!!)

    21. Yay! Underwear-twins :) Jude makes an amazing Rosie the Riveter, btw! I love your avatar!

      1) At the moment it's tapas! If you are ever in Liverpool make sure you go to Tapas Tapas (http://www.tapastapas.co.uk/) incredible restaurant with fantastic staff and delicious seasonal food.

      2) I would much rather be too cold because you can always warm up with an extra jumper or a blanket. I am always the grumpiest person in hot weather.

      3) Eeeech. Perhaps, hair for teeth? At least it works for baleen whales!

Will answer again then :) I would change perceptions of elitism. It is okay to have a preference of one thing above all others. That in itself is really not a bad thing. Knowing what you like, being honest about what you like, being confident about what you like, it's all good stuff. I would change it so that other people aren't threatened by someone else's confidence and openness. Saying "I prefer Volks dolls" is not secret code for "all other dolls suck."

True elitism, where someone genuinely does think they're a cut above because of the dolls they collect or the handbag the use or the clothes they wear... it definitely exists, but those people are in a very small minority. The fear of elitism is actually bigger than the actual problem of elitism.

    22. 1. Mediterranean cuisine, hands down! The summer I spent in Greece was heaven. California Mexican is my comfort food, though. I could live on fresh salsa.

      2. Depends on how hot is too hot. One can only strip down so much before there's nothing left to take off and I hate air conditioning. I guess I'd have to pick too cold because coats are my fave type of clothing.

      3. Also taking the baleen option!! O_o Yay Blue Whales!

If I could change something else about the hobby, I'd say we need a non-toxic sealant. Too many faceup artists develop respiratory problems.

    23. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...my fellow staff have mentioned some of the ones I'd do already.

I think I would probably want to change the want/need/have mentality to a more creative one, with less of an emphasis on "having to be good at it". In recent years the demographics have shifted from a customizer's mentality to a buyer's mentality. There's such joy to be had in creating everything from scratch, regardless of talent, that I think lots of people would benefit from it. It's nice to be able to create anything, and while skill is an ultimate goal, I don't think the learning process should be at all discarded as worthless or for naught :) It's also an exercise in application of self. I'd want everyone to stop worrying about comparing themselves/their attempts and just to accept that they won't be perfect off the bat, but that doesn't mean they won't be very good later on ^^ I'm a fan of hard work!

XDDD I think sakuraharu's takes the cake, that was the first I thought of. This more recent one made me laugh too, if only because I share the human struggles!

    24. Every time I got to read everyone's reply on their panties I felt like Chii pointing out panties. Haha

But I have a new question for the lovely mods!

I dropped my Macbook on the tile and the corner is all kinds of beat up now. My dad beat at it with a hammer trying to flatten it but now the piece that's covering all the giblets around the keyboard and track pad is starting to pop up. I lack the funds to have Apple fix it (plus it's a really old Macbook Pro so not worth fixing) and wonder, what ways would you fix this? It keeps popping up and scratching my arm as I click refresh waiting for the second challenge to come up. :c

    25. Sorry that I'm so late to the party, but I'm going to be replying now too. Hee. Plus this maintenance question is a question close to my heart. If percussive maintenance (the hammer) has failed you, most damages can be solved with liberal application of duct tape. If duct tape doesn't work, just add more duct tape! At least it has the added bonus of making it not hurt so much if it pops up. D:

If that doesn't work, maybe it's time to replace the poor thing. Tiled floors are evil, especially for fragile items. I've had many a glass end up on a tiled floor.

    26. Get some thin brass stock that's about an inch wide and have dad use that hammer to shape a few lengths of it into c-shaped clips that are the right depth and length to grip the edge of your computer and reach the part that's popping up. Coat the arms of the clip with liquid (or ordinary) electrical tape so that there are no sharp edges. Slide the clips onto your laptop. Should be thin enough that you can still close it. :)

    27. I'm also going to shuffle in apologetically, and take a stab at the last few pages of questions, hehehehe. ;)

      1. Yes, I have. I was on the bad end of AOotM when I just had a brain slip and answered a question regarding a group order in a discussion thread. So I know how easy it is to 'slip up'. But I also know how important it is to follow that very rule. Everyone makes mistakes. We just have to try really hard to keep things where they belong i.e. transactions in the right place. ;)

      2. The Moderation Team as a rule looks at the state of play on the forum regularly to make sure everything is fair amongst members. As for members impacting rules - that happens all the time. But not in this specific way really. Quite often someone will send us a suggestion in Ask the Mods and that makes a big difference to how things operate...

You had me at steak. ;)

      1. No :P
      2. He does ping on the lovely scale, but do I dare listen to him sing? :P

      1. Right now is just getting faceups on some of my dolls! *fail* XD
      2. I dunno how much, off the top of my head. Particularly because some Mods (you know who you are!) have been seriously depriving themselves of sleep to get stuff looking as spiffy as it does! But lets just say a truckload. ;)
      3. I think it'd be lovely to have a re-release! I wouldn't mind getting a couple myself. As for the contest, I'll leave that for Mods more in the know. ;)

      All the Fluttershy. ;)

      1. I remember Aimee Steinberger being one of the founders, but I wasn't around then. I think some of the other Mods have covered the history far better than me! :P
      2. Mermaid. They're just a creature that's been hugely part of my creative influences since I was a kid. My avvie is evidence. ;)
      3. Sci-fi movie at the moment is Pacific Rim. Sci-fi anime is much harder...can I pick a series? Cowboy Bebop.
      4. Nope.

      1. Jess already beat me to it. ;)
      2. Yep, totally moosetar! :D

      *checks* Light blue.

Sword. Almost any sword. I'd prefer nothing too unwieldy, because I'd get tired. My swordfighting troupe discuss this regularly (cos' why not?). And my very specific answer would be - my traditional long bow and sword for unforseen close combat.

      1. I think I'd try to make people see that it's far better to get somewhere with kindness. It's too easy to get emotional and for it to turn nasty. I'd convince people to pick niceness first.
      2. I'd pick a beautiful doll couch. Nothing makes a doll more comfortable that a nice plush piece of furniture.

Oooh. Y'know what? There's no instant snap up. I always consider the price. But I'm a very 'slow' and 'boring' collector. Ask any of my doll friends!

But a doll I would stop and seriously consider if I ever saw it would be a Volks Yugiri. The lips! Those eyes! I've loved him for a LONG time...

      1. Curry. All the curry! Japanese, Indian, Thai, whatever. Give it me!
      2. Too cold. I can rug up and drink warming things!
      3. Teeth for hair! It'd be like an insta-helmet! A very creepy one! Man, could you imagine flossing? Yikes!

Y'know what, I can't think of one! But the trolling thread linked here was pretty darn funny. So I'll steal that!

I'd grieve and move on, but given you've said funds are an issue, I'd keep at trying to fix the cover. Macs are fairly resistant to trauma if they're the metal cased ones. I've seen holes burnt in some and they're totally fine. But I'd also be saving up my pennies for a replacement.

    28. Sneaking back in and answering a few more.

      1. I don't think I have, but if I have, then I'm very sorry. D:

      2. Feedback from our members about rules definitely does have an effect! We do value all the feedback. :3

      1. I prefer taking tips from The Following. ;D

      2. I don't know who that is, sorry!

I've just recently moved, so I'm not working on anything at the moment because I don't have most of my dolls with me. However, I am waiting on an F-29. ^^

The only character I really like is Luna because she looks awesome.

Knock knock, who's there? THE DOOR! (Props to asdf movie for that joke.)

      1. I only really remember Aimee, so I don't remember much.

      2. If we're talking creatures rather than humanoids, then I'd like to be a Naga because I love snakes. ...though, that's humanoid too. So, Naga or Valkyrie.

      3. Probably Star Trek Nemesis for Sci-fi movies.

      4. My YoSD White Rabbit is named after Albert Wesker from Resident Evil, if that counts? xD

Hrm, I have three favourites. My SD17 Williams because he's ever so fun to dress and remains one of my grails. My Unoa Lusis in fairy skin because I've always wanted a Lusis. Finally, probably my YoSD White Rabbit because he's adorable. <3

    29. Maybe Harry Potter has a spell for that, if not, I'd probably just superglue it and smooth the edges with a touch of silicone after its dry >____>

One for the rest of the team:
If one of your dolls were alive a la human scale, living, breathing, real creature, which one would you choose to be stranded on an island with?

    30. Some of them would terrify me if they were real. No thanks on the 7ft tall, mind-controlling psychic with no moral code (MA Corvi/IOS 80cm). Maybe I'd take Lena (SD16 F36), she can teleport, but that would be cheating, I think.

So strictly under the parameter of being "stranded", I'd take Idris (F30). He's strong, capable, smart, emotionally balanced, and very social. He can also see the future, just in case rescue might happen and if not I wouldn't have to waste time wondering.

    31. I think Morideryn would be the right choice. She's a tribal princess and knows everything about hunting and foraging and making a decent outdoor shelter!

    32. Hey mods: How did you choose your user name and what does it mean, if anything?

I'll be fair: Rosslyn was my very first Dungeons and Dragons character.

    33. Mine is actually a blend of my RL name Jessica with Narcissa (Malfoy.) During a weekend after a midnight HP book launch my friends and I got into a long discussion about good and bad in the HP universe and invented an off-shoot of the Death Eaters called the Archers of Death and came up with DE-inspired names for each other. I can only remember Jescissa, Vonniemort, Greybecky, Llinucius and Niatrix, but there were a few others.

    34. I'd take Fawne, my CP Lishe, because she's resourceful and tough. And we'd look out for one another. n.n

Taralphiel was a Random Elf Name Generator name from a Tolkien RP site I frequented when I was 16 or 17. I think it very simply, and probably not accurately, breaks down to 'Swan Queen'. :P

And funnily enough, I've since used the name, or a bit of a chopped down version, in a D&D campaign for a Half-Elf Rogue character. :D

    35. Mine is pretty boring - it's actually my real name.

I chose to use my name because that's what I used on DoA Yahoo group, and I always thought DoA will be this small niche forum where everybody knows each other, so using my name seemed like a good idea at the time

    36. Hmm. Most of them are completely useless urban pansies. I think I'd have to pick Anastasia, since her ability to manipulate matter and energy would definitely be an advantage. I would just have to hope that she'd decide she needed companionship more than she needed bacon. :atremblin

A long long time ago when I signed up for my very first email account, I decided to use the name of the character of mine who spent the most time on a computer. At the time, that was Aaron St. James. It became my default ID in most places and it was shortened to St. James because he hates his first name and never told it to anyone he met as an adult. I think of it more as a British place name than a Catholic saint name - though I did grow up steeped in Catholicism - so it never occurred to me that it might imply that I was religious. It does still seem awkward to refer to the doll I have of St. James as St. James without feeling like I'm creepily talking about myself in the third person, or that I think he's some kind of Mini-Me. :|

    37. Idris Fynn is the name of one of my characters (doll image in my avatar). I distinguish my name from his name by having mine run together in lower case, and his in proper name form.

I was already using his name for my email addy, and I figured that since this place was called Den of Angels, using his name worked best, as he is one of the forces for justice and balance in the story. The Welsh meaning of Idris is "ardent/impulsive/passionate lord/leader". It is also the name of an early prophet in the Qur'an, he is thought to be a parallel to the biblical Enoch, descendant of Adam, long lived and undying. Fynn is a Gaelic name meaning "fair". I think all of this ties into his character and place in the story.

    38. What is the single funniest and/or strangest incident you've ever experienced in the BJD hobby (real life or online)?

    39. Befriending JennyNemesis? I was just hand delivering a jewelry order to a local customer at a meetup, and she turned out to be one for the most outrageously funny and smart women I've ever met. Been doing public spit takes ever since.

    40. I've got another one:
What was the first bjd that had an impact or memorable effect on you to influence your thinking or even maybe your future collection in some way? It could be the one that made you go "Ok, yes, I want one of these bjd of my own!" or one later that made you look at dolls in a new way, or an odd one that put you off and caused you to say 'No, none like that for me, thanks'.

Also, sweet or salty, chocolate/candy/ice cream or chips/crisps....which do you prefer in a snack food when you get 'the crave'?

    41. Today, or in general? In general, it's whatever the Great Lady Hanes puts in the multi-pack. Today....it's a different color than what it was yesterday.

You're gonna be sorry you asked this one....

Let's put it this way: I have 5 giant totes of laces, ribbons, silk flowers and pearls from my crafting era. I have 15 years of beads and beading supplies from all the projects I wanted to do and noticed in a lot of how-to beading books. I went to SF/media conventions for almost 40 years and never found a dealers room I didn't enjoy. I've been in the bonsai hobby on and off for 20 years and that means not only plants, but shaping tools, wire, pots, stands, trays and a ton of books with prettier trees than mine. I have a sewing machine for the cloth dolls I was going to get into making and lots of fabric for the doll clothing I'd like to make. I collected japanese animation cels until the CG evolution and they require storage folders, folder support stands and a regulated climate. I crochet and can't resist a great yarn sale and/or interesting books with patterns I don't have the patience to try. I did Polynesian dancing for several years and still have the Tahitian "grass" skirts and tall "hats" that I made and embellished myself, as well as 2 tote bins full of shell strands and collections you can't find in stores any more. Then there's the art supplies, the writing supplies, the spare computer parts from the desktop I'm still learning how to assemble. The VHS tape/DVD/CD collection due to "archivist's disease", a consequence of the conjunction of my first videotape recorder and first cable tv account.

I'll stop here, but you get the idea. Hobbywhelming, indeed.

Nigel. He's a current incarnation of a powerful god, has the power to get us off any isolated island, and likes hotel accommodations just as much as I do. I know I should say Cal, but really, he'd think about alleviating his boredom long before thinking of escape, and I wouldn't want to be in the direct line of that fire--

Since other people have been recommending classic PS's, this is one of my favorites (probably not work-safe):
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...oys-in-underwear-amp- mild-nudity)-(Img-Hvy)

      1. Chinese or pizza/Italian.
      2. Neither. I prefer to be absurdly comfortable.
      3. Hair for teeth. Don't think I'd get a good night's rest trying to sleep on a scalp full of molars.

Ha. There are at least 5....

      1. The same thing I'd change about every hobby I've ever been in. That need of some people to be the biggest fish, no matter how small the pond in which they swim.
      2. The doll of their dreams. But they'd have 5 seconds to choose--

Five acquaintances I can run faster than.

The character creation for Calciferbird, my MNF El. His personality just wrote out so strong I couldn't even think of getting another El for years. And then there's the experience of being at the NY Dolpa, tables full of big ol' Volks boys that made me want one of my own....

Salt over sweet, but ice cream/sherbert over chips.

    42. You know... I only just got this... right up until yesterday I was worried you were a pervert... now I officially think you are hilarious!!

Godly Modlies... If you could bottle your awesomeness and sell it as a scent... what would it smell like and what would it be called?

    43. These questions are hilarious!

Mod darlings: if you could have a doll sculpted and designed to 100% of your exact specifications, but you had to sacrifice your current collection, would you do it?

    44. Apart from recasts... I think I would change everyone looking for validation from other people. Other people don't need to like your dolls as long as you do! And if someone doesn't like something, it doesn't mean that it's inferior or that you're not allowed to like it.

I love curry, be in Thai, Japanese, or Indian. I especially love red curry that has that milky coconut base. It's sooooo goood.

I'd rather be too hot than too cold, I think.

And I'm going to take a turn from the rest of the mods and say I'd rather have teeth for hair. Hair for teeth seems creepier and less functional... and I think of how icky and annoying it is to get a single piece of hair in your mouth...

Mine was a nickname from a friend in high school. I'm still not sure of exactly where it came from, but I've always thought it was a combination of Amidala and Princess Leia, and then my own name (Aimee). I can still really hear it in his hard Rochester accent. A lot of people think it is pronounced and spelled "Armelia", but it's got another 'e' in there... so it's Ar-meh-leia (like Leia from Star Wars).

I'd probably choose Knife. He's a real sweetheart, not to mention he's a powerful magic user... so we'd be pretty set. Though he pretty much hates nature, so he probably wouldn't be too thrilled about it.

Um... the first doll I fell in love with was Volks Lukas. I still feel a squishy thrill of nostalgia when I see one, and I still think he's one of the most beautiful BJD sculpts ever.

I tend to prefer sweet. I am a bit of a chocolate fiend. Though to be honest, my favorite is fleur de sel caramel, which satisfies both salty and sweet!

I think I might... but at the same time, my dolls tend to go in little groups, and I don't think I could ever just have one doll alone without feeling as though he must be lonely. I don't think they're self-aware, but I project and I'd probably be feel bad for his solitary life. Could I buy someone else later? ;)

    45. Delf Dreaming Shiwoo was the one that tipped me over into wanting my own BJD. His original promotional photos were so ethereal and sweet! idrisfynn had tried to point me at Volks Cecile first but his default face-up and Little Lord Fauntleroy look really turned me off. Later on, I can't say that I was thrilled by anthros or the realism of iplehouse dolls, but I do find some of them to be pretty now. I still prefer my dolls to be more stylized, but humanoid. Doll Chateau has been a very inspiring new view!

My snack weakness is actually butter, so I will go for a flakey, buttery, caramelized, fresh out of the oven kouign amann before anything else. And unfortunately for me, there are a half dozen pastry shops within an eight block radius of my home, never mind all the ones near work or on my walk in between. I just try to limit myself to one a day and make it a really good one that I have to walk up at least one hill to get to.

Wasn't this a RuPaul's Drag Race challenge? I don't recall that ending well, but at least I won't mistake the Marui One building for Times Square!
I'd want it to smell like sun-warmed cat fur, salty ocean breezes, leather bound books, smokey pu-erh and a wisp of spicy greenery. And I'd call it Life's Too Short, Chill the F*** Out.

Nope, unless getting it produced is going to cost me enough that I have to sell some of them, I don't think I'll need to sacrifice them. :)

    46. LMAO - Yes it was!!! its only on cable here so I never get to see it anymore but oh I loled myself silly watching in our room at Disneyland!! I'd totally buy that ;)

    47. Well, I doubt that any sort of awesomeness is involved. But my first impulse towards a scent was, strangely enough, that if I could produce a scent that smells like chicken marsala, I'd be very happy. I have a long and happy connoisseur-relationship with that dish. But selling involves something people would want to buy... I'd have to hire someone to create a concoction of rosemary, myrrh, sandalwood and sage. Providing they do blend together harmoniously, that would be awesome. I'd probably want to name it Scarborough Fair, just to really lock in the ambience of counterculture, niche and residual-hippie-ish interests.

Nope. Never, not even a moment's hesitation in answering.

Obviously, my collection shows that my specifications are mutable and varied; and just because I could design something doesn't mean it would work better or look better than what's already out there. I've also been in the hobby long enough, and had enough *must have* crushes, to realize belatedly how transitory grail-impulses really are, and selling your soul to satisfy one of them really isn't worth it. And to sacrifice the dolls and characters I've poured bits of my soul into for some theoretical attempt at perfection-in-resin-alone -- just isn't worth it at all!

    48. This particular Dreaming Lishe was one of the first I saw and I thought she was incredible - I still think she is :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/sigridsurrounded/613270699/

I am definitely a savory girl! I like chocolate but I'd prefer a packet of crisps!

Such a hard question!! I would have to say no because my tastes are a bit fickle and I know that as soon as I had a doll entirely to my specifications I'd be likely to change my mind again a little while later :p At least with my gang I have a mix I'm happy with :)

Fun question! It would be a mingle of the scent of freshly opened books, the mountain rose in my garden, pink lemonade, cherries and redcurrants! I'd call it something simple like 'Ffrwyth', (fruit in Welsh.)

    49. Well that 'moment' was the first time I saw a BJD. It was a CP El owned by a good friend of mine. And, several years later, my collection continues to grow because of her! :)

I'm usually a salty snack food person. I'm trying to stick with 'clean' eating and rid myself of junk at the moment, so rather than chips, it'd be kale chips. ;)

That said, it's Father's Day here and my Dad has requested scones. So I do cheat once in a while. ;)

My scent would be called 'Flozzy Lozzy' (a nickname my Mum gave me). It'd be based in mangoes (love love LOVE mangoes!), with breezes of summer and a teensy hint of flowers like Jasmine. ;)

I couldn't part with my collection. It'd tempt me, but I'd just have to look at my first doll, and know I couldn't do it! My dolls have so many amazing memories, I couldn't part with them all for the sake of one!

      Great questions everyone! :)

    50. So happy to see Truffle make an appearance and I'm really loving reading this thread. Hehe ^_^

      Dear lovely mods,

      - If you could pick one or several of your dolls to go on vacation with you (instead of a person) who would you take, where would you go and what would you do together? Feel free to be exotic or fanciful.

    51. What was the first bjd that had an impact or memorable effect on you to influence your thinking or even maybe your future collection in some way? It could be the one that made you go "Ok, yes, I want one of these bjd of my own!"

In 2005, I had been looking at BJDs and wanting one for five years, but I hadn't taken the plunge. It was seeing this doll called an SA Bermann? made by some guy with a studio called Dollshe? I saw a picture of him, jumped out of my chair and declared I was going to sell one of my kidneys to get him. :sweat I started looking for information about him and joined this forum in the process. He wasn't all that popular at the time, so he wasn't that hard to get. It was kinda crazy to see the feeding frenzy that happened over Bermanns shortly after, and I was glad I moved quickly to get one before all that happened. *_*

or one later that made you look at dolls in a new way

About a year ago, I was getting a bit burnt out and less interested in new releases. In an attempt to shake myself out if it I started poking about on other forums and collecting links to dozens of other small artist shops and studios that were outside the main of the hobby. I am continuously interested in what they are doing and marvel at the continued ingenuity of doll artists, quite a few are not "on topic" for DoA, but I collect a lot of things that aren't. :P

or an odd one that put you off and caused you to say 'No, none like that for me, thanks'.

I have never been into the hyper-realism of the mini-mee heads. I've seen some come out quite lovely, but they made me realize that I have a line between my BJDs and my action figures. I love both doll types, but I don't like them completely fused together. I like my BJDs to stay more stylized and my action figures to look like the art or people that inspired them. Iplehouse is sort of riding a line that makes me less interested in them. Lovely, but not for me.

Also, sweet or salty, chocolate/candy/ice cream or chips/crisps....which do you prefer in a snack food when you get 'the crave'?

I'm salty. Love chips, sea salt & vinegar preferably. Though, a nice dark choco bar with caramel and sea salt is very nice. I can do sweet & salty then.

If you could bottle your awesomeness and sell it as a scent... what would it smell like and what would it be called?

It would smell like insomnia, caffeine and ozone with a hint of clove spice and dusty books. I think I'll call it Unsleeping as the other names I came up with are uh, not... forum appropriate.

If you could pick one or several of your dolls to go on vacation with you (instead of a person) who would you take, where would you go and what would you do together? Feel free to be exotic or fanciful.

I only ever do the same thing when I vacation, so they can go with me and do that or stay home. I would take them to a big city somewhere in the world where we'd shop, people watch, look at art, eat lovely little things and sleep the sleep of the dead. I think, assuming they were suddenly alive and could carry their own luggage, I'd take Magnus, Lex, Maeve and Kyuuya. They would most enjoy the activities.

    52. I actually find holidays very stressful to organise. The best bit for me is the travelling rather than the arriving! However, if my dolls really wanted to go somewhere and I had to take them, I would take Rupert (SDC Kurt), my poor neglected boy, and we would go to stay in a hut on an island in the middle of a lake or something. Somewhere very quiet and peaceful.

    53. First of all, thank you so much to all the moderators for doing a great job with this forum, I really admire you all because you have great patience and thanks to you we can have this wonderful forum for free! I don't think I would enjoy this hobby as much without the community. I must say that I highly enjoyed all the contests!!! I didn't participate or voted because I came late to the party:sweat but I still enjoyed the great ideas for the contests and the talented participants' entries! :aheartbea

My question or request is: show us your favorite BJD photo of all time and why it is your favorite? ( I forgot to mention, a photo you've taken)

    54. Thank you for enjoying the forum!

      That's a tricky question. I think it would be a tie between this photo;

It's not the best technical image, and there's tons I could improve on, but I really like the way Morideryn looks in this photo, and the green and red flowers compliment her red hair and green eyes so well. I even like the shadows the flowers cast on her neck even though a better photographer might have taken those out or moved the flowers so they didn't cast a shadow.

      And this photo;

I think this one is just fun, and it reminds me of a really lovely day out by the waterfall.

    55. Oh my goodness, bottle that up! Where can I pre-order? :D

    56. This will always be a favorite, the image came out great. The whole photoshoot was a group effort. The story behind the shoot was all green_judy, and us helpers included Kiyakotari, JennyNemesis, St. James & a couple others but my memory is terrible. GJ directed and we all posed the dolls and took pics.

For an image that was just me (and my helper St. J), probably this one:

      or

      or maybe:

This is all going to be archived soon, and asking me to ever pick one of anything is crazy so I figure I'd post a few. ;P

    57. I would take Kaspar to Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland in June. I've always wanted to do a photoshoot of him on his home turf. And to eat a lot of cheese and chocolate. I'd have to bring Magnus along too because Kaspar wouldn't go without him and then idrisfynn would have to come along to carry him and because I can't eat all of that chocolate by myself. The cheese is all mine though, because I'm being fanciful!

Hmmm, that's tough. It could be a photo of my favorite doll, or my favorite concept, or my favorite scene, or my favorite illustration of characters, but I think that ultimately this is my favorite BJD photo:

It illustrates exactly what is amazing about BJD engineering when it is done right. That's my doll holding her brand new doll; no sueding, no wiring, no strings, no putty, no props, no camera tricks, no photoshop.
