Hi! I have an Aprilstory Rebecca, and I've been kinda bothered about her eyes not showing properly in photos. After a photoshoot I had to edit her eyes in nearly every photo so they would actually show normally. Is it the eyelashes that are shading the eyes too much? or would I have to mod it from the inside so the eyes come closer to the eyelids? At first I kind of had this idea that eyelashes are a must, but maybe not? (first photo is from before I put in eyelashes)
She looks really cute! I think she might benefit from a different pair of eyes, maybe with a higher dome. Her current ones seem to have a very low/flat dome, which can make it harder to catch the light. Also, the same pair of eyes can look drastically different in a different doll, so before deciding on a mod I'd recommend playing with some other eyes for your girl until you find the perfect look. I hope this helps!
Eyes can be really tricky. I think that editing the eyes of dolls in pictures to look more evenly illuminated may have been a practice more common than you'd think (?) - I have never done this but I have heard others seeming to consider it a basic edit. Before modding, have you tried any difference eyes in her? Eyes come in different dome shapes and most dolls wear a certain kind of eye better than others. Trying to figure out which one is Best can get expensive and frustrating. Ideally you just want the eye that best forms to the eyewell shape and gets that iris nice and close to the front. As for whether eyelashes are mandatory, that's a matter of opinion and totally up to you! I'm team no-eyelashes anytime it makes my life easier.
Thanks! I'll see if I still have some extra eyes somewhere I can try with ^^ I shall have to experiment a little. I could live without the eyelashes but I'd be scared to actually modify so I hope I can find a different solution. Thanks!
When dolls are made, I don't always know that the artist creating the eye wells does so while considering the variety of shapes doll eyes come in. Some eyes are made quite spherical, some have very high domes, some are very flat and wide, there's a lot of variety. When I know what eyes I want for my doll, I do bevel them out with an eye beveling tool (i have a set of these) so the eyes set in perfectly. This is best done before a doll has a faceup as over vigorous beveling could catch some of the paint around the inner eye edge. So sometimes I end up waiting until I get a doll repainted before I get a chance to do this. Looking at the eyes you have, you may want to consider going a size down. Of course it's a personal preference but usually you don't see that much iris in a human eye and I think one size smaller would allow the eye to sit properly. edit: I also edit my photos to make the eyes a little bit brighter! haha
A beveler as already mentioned can help to thin the eye well and allow the eyeball to sit flush closer to the opening. Having said that, eyelashes do add a lot of shadow, I personally love eyelashes on dolls with replaceable eyes, but they add a lot of extra shade. Which helps (in my opinion), to avoid the always surprised-look. By having that extra shade soften the glaring right at you stare. Lower domed eyes will help in how well the eye sit in narrow eye-shapes. I own mostly narrow eyed dolls, high domes always leave gaps and create even more shadow, due to the negative space, in narrow-shaped-eyed-dolls. Lighter eye colors also help. Eyelashes are definitely a personal choice, it's not a necessary feature. I feel opened eyed dolls look bald-eyed without them, but that's again, personal preference. Lighting from different angles also help to avoid how dark the eyelashes create shadows. As well as lash placement. I suck at both placing lashes and setting lights, so I won't pretend to give you any suggestions. Hope that helps you some, and good luck. (:
I had no idea such tools existed! I think I'll look into it. Thank you! And I do agree about the eye size, I think I'll look for smaller ones eventually :^)
Thank you! Yeah I am now considering if I should just do away with the lashes At least to see if it helps.
Agreed that you just need to find the right eyes for a better fit. Ashuradark offers a kit of resin blanks with different sizes and shapes, not sure if it's still available but something like this could help you try different options easily?
Oh that's interesting! There's so many tools and things I never would have been aware of Thank you so much, that's really helpful!
