I couldn't find an existing thread on this, so I figured I'd start one. Unfortunately I missed the pre-order (I was checking instagram like crazy, but I guess the official pre-order dates were only posted on the website) but at least I managed to get on the waitlist. I'm very excited to finally get my hands on bactro, and I love the smaller scale! I'm already planning how I'd like to paint and dress them...just a matter of finding things at the proper size! Love to hear what everyone else is planning to do with theirs.
Thank you for starting a thread for Mini Bactro, tuneful87! And glad to hear you made it on the wait list! I ordered a light blue one. I had spotted the pre-order announcement on BJD Collectasy. I love the larger, original-size Bactros, too, but wasn't able to get one. I'm more into smaller dolls anyway, so getting this mini is even better. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about getting one. Have you seen the WIP pic from Haru Casting? Harucasting's WIP on Sep 11. Can't wait to see more in-progress pics - helps ease the waiting a bit and keep the excitement going.
The light blue is very pretty. Thanks for sharing the progress photo... You'll have one in your hands before you know it! I'm planning to get one of each color. Are you planning to make your own wig and clothes for her?
Thank you, tuneful87! I don't blame you for wanting all three - they'll look awesome together! I would have loved to buy another, but could only afford one this time. I'm hoping there will be another pre-order offered for them at some point. I can definitely make a wig for her, since I've made wigs before, but not sure about clothes. I have a lot of doll clothes, so I'll see if she can fit in anything before I commit to whipping her up something. If I can't find anything that works, I'll take a stab at it. I've seen some pics of the larger Bactro dolls dressed beautifully on Flickr. Will you be making wigs and clothes for yours?
Trust me, I shouldn't be getting three myself! But I figure I don't want to miss out and later regret it... I have minor experience making wigs (saran and mohair) but I wouldn't say I'm great at it....it's the part that really messes me up. Otherwise, I think I do a decent job. Love to see the wigs you've done. Do you accept commissions at all? As far as hair color, Green will probably get a blonde bob (nylon or saran), Blue will get long white wavy mohair wig, and Yellow will be a redhead in mohair, perhaps with a sideswept ponytail, or more likely a braid. For clothing, I'm thinking short summer dresses and romper shorts/suspenders combos. My Pollen are dressed rather regally, but the Bactro has a more carefree, fun-loving look, so I think the playful clothing will suit them a bit better. I have no sewing experience (other than one class) so I'm planning to make a duct-tape dummy and commission my friend, Fern Black.
Sounds like you may have more experience making wigs that I do, tuneful87. I've only made a handful of mohair wigs for my tiny dolls, following tutorials I found on-line. One was a Marie Antoinette style for my Catsy , but the rest were just the simple sort. I've also modified manufactured wigs. I own a lot of cat bjds, so have to make room for those ears, but not sure Bactro would need much wig modification. I'm thinking she can probably wear mass produced, with little to no modification. Your wig choices sound great! I know from experience how pretty white mohair looks on blue resin dolls. It gives them an ethereal look. I made one for my blue Nabiyette. It's a long wavy one, but not thick, since she's a fairy and wispy works better for her. Not sure which way I'll go with my Bactro. I have leftover white mohair, but I may want to go with pinks or purples. Maybe even a gradient one, where the color gets darker on the ends. I recently saw a pic of a blue resin wearing a deep pink wig that looked great. Well, I suppose we could give them a wig wardrobe, right? Lots of options out there. They look kind of cute bald, too. Lucky you to have Pollen dolls! I didn't even know about Pollen until recently - really wonderful doll. Bet yours must look very impressive in their regal attire. I've seen pics of the larger Bactro dolls wearing corset tops, which looked very nice on them. I love romantic and cute styles, but I think you're right about Bactro. She lends herself to many different styles, since she's such a free spirit. I don't think there's a wrong way to dress her.
That's a good point. There should be a decent variety of pre-made wigs that fit them...I believe they're 3/4, right? I have so many colorful dolls (dablyop, ceryop, argonautica, pollen, etc) but...they all have fancy head-plates or sculpted mohawks or spikes, so I don't get to utilize wigs. So...this should be fun! Also - I have a friend who loves the Catsy dolls! She has one but has been looking for another for ages. Pink/purple/gradients would work well with blue as well. I actually just listed a very pretty pink mohair wig for sale. It's 5/6, but the mohair could probably be salvaged to make a tiny wig. Pollen comes up for sale here and there, so you might manage to find one yet. I *think* I got the last two in stock, blue twins (yet to have the photoshoot they deserve). They fit into Monster High clothing fairly well, so I put them in custom white dresses. I also have a white one I snagged on ebay...she's my favorite: Mitski by the_alien_experience, on Flickr
She's gorgeous, tuneful87! Very regal, indeed, and I can see why she's your favorite. Yes, I see what you mean - you'd never want to cover up Pollen's head with a wig. It's wonderful with those spikes! I don't know what size wig Bactro might take. In the side-by-side comparison pic Mewiefish posted on her facebook, it appears Bactro's head is a little bigger than Pollen's. A 3 is pretty small - I've used that size on an Elfdoll tiny. They're only 14 cm tall, while Bactro is expected to come in at 22 cm. My best guess would be more the 4, but possibly even larger. Perhaps Mewiefish will post the measurements soon. That would give us a much better idea of what we can buy for them. I love colored resins, too, especially the fantasy colors. I only have a couple blue ones now, my favorite color, but I have a few others in various shades of mint resin - my latest is Nympheas Dolls' Brioche, which actually looks rather blue in brighter light. Catsy cats - those I have a merry band of, in the 4 colors they made them in and another I dyed pink. Also in both sexes, since they made males and females. Catsy was the first bjd to sucker me in. Too bad that Elfdoll stopped making dolls. They do turn up for sale from time to time, so I hope your friend finds another one. And she won't be competing with me for it - no room in this inn for more. They wouldn't be considered "on-topic" for this thread, but you can see pics of them here: Kitty Korner
Thank you! Sorry, I had it in my head as 3/4 but Mewiefish posted a head circumference as 11cm, which comes out to 4.3 inches. I suspect a custom wig might be best, as 4/5 will probably be too big and 3/4 too small. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. Thanks for the link...I'll leave my comments on flickr.
If it's a wig with some give, a 4 should work fine. My only concern is how deep is her headcap - meaning is there more to it than the average doll. It almost looks like her head is longer in some pics, but you're right - probably best to wait and see. Thanks for the comments on flickr - figured they were from you, so had to check out your flickr, too and spotted your lovely Pollen. Wow - great pics and some other fantastic dolls, too! Noticed you had some Max Toy kaiju sofubi figures. Naturally, I have a soft spot for Negora, especially Max Toy's version. Second to my love of dolls come Japanese sofubi toys. Lots of fun weird there.
Forgot to ask the other day, but did Mewiefish post any other measurements for Mini Bactro, besides her head circumference?
Yes, she posted height and eye size I believe. The height posted was similar to Pollen, but the mini bactro seemed taller in photos!
I was just checking Haru Casting's to see if there were anymore WIP pics for Mini Bactro. I didn't see any but noticed a pic of doll that I believe was at about the same stage of progress is now cast in a cream white. Hope that a good sign that Bactro is not too far behind. BTW - I received your flickr pm and responded back. I hope you received it okay, @tuneful87
Was just checking out Haru Casting's flickr - there is a pic of the blue Mini Bactro pieces: Harucasting's WIP on Oct 14. Won't be long now!
You were hoping for lighter? I think you never can tell what the exact color is until it's in your hands. I mean, monitors read color differently and then some people up the saturation level in their pics. Of course, it won't be the same lt. blue that was used in the big Bactros, since those were hand cast by Mewiefish, I believe. It's a different type resin, too. I think this new stuff is lighter weight - I read a post where someone mentioned it, in regard to Bulbi, another doll Haru Casting produced. Check out comments #32 -34: HeartStrung Bulbi doll (25cm) Not 100% sure Mini Bactro will be the same, but also not sure she'll be different. If it's as it looks, I'm happy with the color, but then again, I really love blue dolls. Sometimes the blue is so light, it hardly registers and for me, that's disappointing. Like with that blue marshmallow. Same thing with some pink resins. I have a pale pink resin that most people would think is white, because it gets washed out from the lighting. Those are the times I have to up the saturation level, so people can see the color better and how it appears IRL.
Well, looks like they've multiplied - their parts, anyway: So far.. I just see the mint and blue, no pastel yellows. Hard to imagine no one ordering one in that color, as it's rather pretty, too.
I wold love to get a blue one of these at some point, though I can't afford one right now. Hopefully I'll have a real job by the next pre-order!
So many pieces! Hmm... Yes, there must be have been been some yellow ordered... I'm very curious to see how that color turns out.
Yes, yellow was ordered and a photo has been posted of them with the blue and mint now: Harucasting's WIP on Nov 29. Looks like they cast the yellows last, as Haru Casting posted that one more yellow left to go. Hope this finally means they will be shipped to Creatures Dolls soon and then on to us.
I don't know the answer, but you can always ask her, either through her blog (Contact | Creatures Dolls) or Facebook page (Creatures Dolls). I did see her latest update on Facebook, where she said that she wanted to avoid shipping during the holidays, so the current order won't be shipping until sometime in January. She did refer to the current order as the "first preorder", so sounds like she's definitely planning to offer another preorder at some point. Hope it's sometime soon!
Thanks for the response. I sent her an email after reading this and she said she would do another preorder (!!!). She also said in December so hopefully she’ll release more info soon!!
You can get on the wait list now! Make sure you ask to be included, as I believe spots are filling up.
Eek, photos of yellow, green, and blue together! Harucasting's WIP on Nov 29. I can't wait until the next order opens up.
I've been keeping an eye on Haru casting's flickr to see when pics are posted showing them boxed and ready to ship out to Creatures Dolls. I imagine she'll open that second ordering period around the same time. I'd kind of like to have the blue one I'm waiting for in-hand first, just in case I want to order another in a different color.
Oooo, what would your next color choice be? Once the next order opens up, I'd like to start sketching outfit and wig ideas.
Probably the mint one, though the pale yellow is pretty, too. There's something about having a pair that I find appealing, because that was my first experience seeing Bactro. Someone had a pair of them and they had them both looking so great - very girly and hip. As though they were teenagers. This pic here: Birds of a Feather, now and for Ever! Only thing is, those are the original, larger size dolls. Their legs look longer to me than Mini Bactro's, but it's hard to judge. What do you think? For me, if the proportions are different, it may change the way I would dress and style her. She may be more like a little sister than a big sister. I think the ordering period will start pretty soon, so get your sketch book out and start having some fun! And hopefully, since Haru has already cast that first order, the second one will be finished faster. I ordered at the end of July and it's been over 5 months. Usually they're ready to ship in 3 to 4, based on other dolls I've seen them do.
They're all packed up and ready to ship out! Looks like there are 14 blue, 8 green and 8 yellow - at least from what I can make out in that one group pic.
Eek! They look amazing. So devastated I missed the pre-order but do hope a subsequent order happens. I'm on the wait list so hopefully Mewie will reach out once we're good to go! I love Koala Krash's girls...she's painted so many bactro. Personally, I think the proportions are exactly the same. I can't imagine Mewie changing them. I think it's simply a matter of the photography...Koala shot that photo from very low which elongated the dolls, while Haru shot from above so they look shorter. Just my perspective!
My MiniBactro arrived with me and she is the perfect big sis for my Feldspathe from Miwie. ^_^ She still needs a face up but she already looks very cute. I'm unsure if she will get a wig or if I will leave her head blank. I hope to see more MiniBactros in the future and I think I somewhere read that Miwie wanted 'soon' to open a pre-order again. Maybe I will need a second one.
Congratulations, @Saiyaku! She makes the perfect big sis for your Feldspathe - they look adorable together! The blue Mini Bactro I ordered shipped out on the 23rd and I'm hoping she'll arrive sometime next week. Will share pics as soon as I can.
@Dino1Kidd Yes, I will post photos when she is finished. @Cattwo I hope you will get your MiniBactro soon. She only needed to travel a short way to me from France to Germany. ^_~ Please post pictures when you get her.
@Saiyaku OMG she's incredible. I am in love with that outfit, especially the pants. Did you make them yourself?
@tuneful87 She is very cute and so tiny. (I saw Miwiefish's handcasted Bactros at the LDoll (a French BJD Convention) and I regretted that I didn't bought one at that time, so I'm relieved to get a 'second' chance). I hope for you she will soon open her next pre-order. Unfortunately I'm no good at sewing but luckily Dearmine has many cute outfits. But the outfits are way too big for little Bactro and you will need to make it smaller. I think someone with semi sewing skills could already do such pants themselves. ^_~
@Saiyaku! You're so lucky to have seen those at the convention! I would give anything to own that green xb12 - such a beauty. I have a friend who will be sewing clothes for the mini bactro for me, and I think I will need to use your photo as an inspiration for one of the outfits! Do you plan to wig her?
@tuneful87 Bloomers on dolls look often so cute and I hope your friend can realize your outfits plans. Will you choose the green/mint colour for your girl? It would be great if other fantasy colours would be available for the next pre-order but if not, I think I would love a second one in mint. The colour looks very nice. I fell in love with the blue Bactro, that's why I ordered her in this colour. Photo from the booth: Photo by Sai Chan I also like the wig style. I tried a 4-5 Wig but the bangs were too long and it looked a bit off. I hope I can see wig styles from other MiniBactro owners to get a feeling what style could fit her but I think she would also look good without a wig. Do you think you will use a wig with her?
@Saiyaku That bactro is very pretty with raven hair! Do you think an exact 4 wig would fit better? I did some outfit sketches the other day and I included wigs in all my designs. Hopefully someone talented with wig making will get a mini bactro and take commissions! I'm on the wait list for all three colors, and if more colors were released, I'd be interested in them as well. I've been wanting a bactro for probably 5 years now. I stupidly missed out on the pre-order because I was following things on instagram but the official announcement was on the blog and facebook, I believe. But I'm eager to make up for lost time!
@tuneful87 I tried a Leekeword wig with 3.5 inch (but I think the wig feels bigger than 3.5 inch). => it's this one LSO-010 And I also tried a no name brand wig with 4-5 inch wig. It's the wig for my Enoki (Irrealdoll) and I had to cut the bangs. When I tried an other wig the bangs were too long for MiniBactro. I think a 4inch wig is better than a 4-5 inch wig but maybe it depends on the wig brand. But it would be great if someone will take commission in the future for a perfect fitting Bactro wig. If more BJD owner have MiniBactro it would be interesting for the wig maker (Frappzilla for example also offers wigs for Enoki). Awwhhh, that would be a cute army of Bactros and I'm looking forward what you will do with each of them. The wait is definitely worth. Yes, the announcement was on FB.
I think the bob style is very complimentary to her outfit. Thanks for sharing the wig tips as well. I look forward to seeing how you paint her.
Your Bactro looks great in those wigs, @Saiyaku! I had some trouble fitting my Bactro in anything smaller than a 4-5 wig. Her head measures 4 1/2 inches, so that makes sense I guess. Anyway, so sorry for the long delay in posting a pic of my Bactro, but here she is with the wig wardrobe I made for her (the stand is by DAE):
Omg! These pictures are just so good. I love the way you styled her. I definitely have to get one! Can’t wait for the next preorder
Thank you very much, Dino1Kidd! What's nice about Bactro is that you can pretty much style her anyway you want - you're only limited by your imagination. I'd like to give her an 18th century style one day, too. She's a lot of fun and I hope Mewiefish opens up the next preorder soon - I'd love for you to have one, too!
On Instagram Mewiefish posted a picture and she said that she’s going to open the second preorder soon!!!
Would someone be able to provide the diameter of mini bactro's forearm at the widest point? I'm planning outfits and trying to figure out what minimum sleeve diameter I'll need.
The widest point on my Bactro's forearm is 1 1/2 inches. Her wrist joint is a touch larger than that, about 1 3/4", and her hand is about 2 1/4 inches, because her fingers splay out. When I say "about", it's because my tape measure has a metal tip and I had to try and measure from the 1 inch mark, folding back that metal tip so it wouldn't get in the way. So please take these measurements with consideration that they may very close, but not be 100% dead on. Allow a little more wiggle room. Sorry I couldn't be more accurate than that - perhaps another owners here has a better measuring tape they can use.
That's perfect, thanks so much! My friend and I are brainstorming how to make fitted sleeves for her. I was thinking perhaps a long slit in the back of the sleeve might work, which would clasp together with a few tiny buttons. I can't think of any other way around it without the entire sleeve being as wide as her hand!
It will certainly be a challenge, but I'm sure you and your friend will figure something out that will work well. I think she's worth the effort to design for and I'm looking forward to what you come up! Good luck to you, tuneful87!
Nice to see that pre-orders for the next batch of Mini Bactros are being taken now! Hope everyone who wants one remembers to submit their order by May 8th. I was going to get another doll, but may only wind up ordering the sleeping face for my blue one. Anyone else ordering one?
I sent an email on Saturday for the 2nd preorder but I haven't received any confirmation yet... Is that normal? I'm afraid my email didn't go through :<
I sent one a couple days ago to order a sleeping face and I haven't heard back yet, either. I wish I could remember more sharply how things played out last year, but I do feel like it took awhile for Mewie to send out confirmations. Still, if you're worried, send her a note about it. The preorder is open until May 8th, so it you want to wait and give it a couple more days before contacting her, you can do that, too.
