Midori the Satyr (doll nudity) Casting successful! New pics!

Sep 26, 2008

    1. This is truly awesome.
I have a friend who loves satyr's who'd go nuts over this.

    2. Hurrah! Midori's first test part cast is a success! I put the middle part of his left leg into a cup to form a silicon mould, waited for it to set, pried the leg out plus its various vents and cardboard contraptions and then poured resin in to see how it came out!

I got a pretty good leg part! it needs a little sanding, and my inserting a straw to make the hole method needs revising, but i'm pretty pleased. Only a couple of tiny bubbles.

I'm using white resin, does anyone have any advice on tinting or do you think i should just leave him white? I could give him some colour with a bit of blushing. I could even cast his legs green or something, so he lives up to his namesake liqueur! XD

Next step: finish the mould inserts for his other upteen million parts (just hands, headcap, feet plugs and lower body to go!) and get the silicon in there. If i can do that tomorrow then i'll be well on the way, and i can do casting experiments to my hearts content at home. hee! so much fun ^^

    3. Hey!

Looking good! It's exciting watching your project come together!

Using transparent silicone must give you a little more control (or at least reassurance), as you can see inside the mould when filling it with resin. Also, I guess it means you can save on resin,... as you can see when the piece is filled and you don't have to fill the inlet right to the top. Right? I'm thinking about positioning the inlet at the bottom of the piece so it fills from bottom to top,... has it worked well this way, do you think?

Hope you post more pics soon... good luck!

    4. Hello! thanks for your encouraging words!

Ok, i can pass on some advice from a guy who helped me who has been casting things like this for years- he used to be in the aircraft industry i believe.

The inlet is made out of a glue gun stick which is whittled to a point on one edge and glued at the thin end to the piece to be cast. I positioned it at the bottom of the part so that when the resin is poured slowly in it fills up from the bottom, forcing the air upwards and out of the vents. (the cocktail sticks) It's a relatively fat tube to build up enough hydrostatic pressure or weight of resin when it's being poured to force it into all the parts of the mould. It's really working well so far!

The silicon is called transil 40 and if anything it's over spec for this project. It's really expensive and I was lucky to get a good rate on it through my university, but it keeps its shape beautifully and cuts really smoothly with a scalpel blade. I had to use a vacuum chamber to get a bubble free mould though.

I've just finished the rest of the moulds (the hands have 10 vents! phew!) and so hopefully i can get them into moulds tomorrow and have them ready to extract on Tuesday! The resin itself takes only four hours to set, so potentially i could have a finished cast by Wednesday! So exciting! Wish me luck ^^

      Also, this may be a little late in the day... but does anyone know the correct elastic/hooks to use for stringing a bjd? I've been improvising so far ^^;;

    5. Hurrah! A huge chunk of Midori's body parts have been submerged in the awesome goop!

...and the four that didn't make it :(

Hopefully i can finish up the silicon moulds tomorrow.

    6. First head cast! It's a bit patchy and helps me see where the air bubbles form, so it's pretty much to help me refine the mould, but still! Exciting! XD

      Also, merry christmas ! :hollyberry

    7. His head is sweet! Looks great!

    8. Love him! Very interesting little guy.

    9. Congrats on your success with the casting
      lol (i like the background)

    10. A huge thankyou to everyone for all your support! I've finally got a finished cast assembled. There are a couple of bits that could do with a re-cast, the eyes came out a little too startled and there a few air bubbles, but in all he's not too bad! I need to sort out his feet plugs, he just has brass rings in there at the moment. I'm really happy that he's come together, so here are some quick photos!

Now i just need to figure out body blushing, a wig and something to preserve his modesty other than his hand. :p

Wow. This was a long journey. I figured out a lot along the way! I also coated myself in resin, destroyed my favourite hoodie and snapped a lot of tiny fingers and ears. So yes. Thanks again for the huge support from this forum!

    11. Congratulations - that is a real achievement and he is wonderfull
