Micro 4/3 – what lenses?

Sep 23, 2012

    1. It seems like most people are using dslrs, but for those using micro 4/3 cameras, what lenses do you have or recommend?

I have the Oly 60mm f/2.8 on order, but I'm wondering if it would be too sharp or not have a good depth of field for doll photography.

    2. The new macro? Nice glass. ;)

I don't have any native-m43 portrait lenses yet, but would suggest possibly looking at something wider than 60 for full body shots or groups, like the Pany Leica 25mm f/1.4 or the Oly 45mm f/1.8. If you're a zoom user, the new Pany 35-100mm f/2.8 should serve adequately as well, though it costs about what all three primes would.

If you're willing to go non-native (adapted), there's too many possibilities to list, though I would suggest Minolta SR and Canon FD lenses are somewhat cheaper than usual since those mounts are obsolete. Good lenses of ~50mm focal length can be quite cheap in full frame format, though of course specific lenses I'm sure can still be quite up there since "everybody" is adapting obsolete glass to mirrorless mounts nowadays.

    3. I really wanted to order the Oly 60mm that you are getting. But what i heard is that the 12,45 and 75mm lens from Olympus are the greatest lens for Micro Four Thirds that you can get. They are also dubbed as the "Holy Trinity".

Currently i use the 17mm f2.8 not as great as the 17mm f1.8 but it's still useable and at an affordable price as well. Although it isn't macro it works well enough for me

    4. I did end up buying the 60mm and really like it. It's very sharp and is especially good for picking up details; it also does a good job of isolating the doll from a background. I have a lot of really tiny dolls (10–14cm), and it's perfect for that. I took photos of a dollhouse and the rooms almost looked real! I also enjoyed using it on my Unoa. However, photographing an SD was cumbersome because it was hard to get the doll in the frame without being fairly far from it. I'm used to propping the doll up with one hand and photographing with the other, and I couldn't do that. It's a fantastic lens but I would mostly recommend it to someone with tinies. I agree with gaiaswill that the 25 or 45 might be better for full body shots, and for 1/3 dolls in general.

I don't think the 75mm would be useful for doll photography, but would love to see doll photo examples if anyone has it.

    5. I have 4/3 olympus 50mm macro
