This is a question for those who have purchased the kits and made them with the included resin. I would be interested in learning how badly have they yellowed so far. I know that all resin yellows, as most plastics due to some extent as well. However, I have learned as well that UV resin is probably the worse at aging poorly, when it comes to its lightfastness. Preferably, I would like to learn from people who have had these kits for longer, hopefully since they released late last year. I am interested in in them, but I would love to know if I should avoid using the resin, and just settle for water-soluble glue, or even not building the kit and just keeping the miniatures separate. Thanks to anyone who can provide any concrete first-hand information on how badly these yellow so far. I know it's not been even a year yet, since these have been out. Having said that, from what I have seen/read about UV resin, it yellows pretty fast. I did a search outside this forum, but I don't feel a lot of people know that resin yellows pretty badly overtime, so perhaps it's not something most other people outside of these dolls are concerned about, but I am. Only so that I don't use the resin and nothing else. I would probably still purchase one or two of the kits, because I do love miniatures, I just rather avoid using something that's going to look like yellow piss after a few months. (:
I have a few of these that I've had for some time now and I haven't noticed any yellowing! I haven't taken any care to keep them out of the sun either... actually, I forgot one in the windowsill for a couple of weeks because the resin was taking a long time to cure and it looked perfect even weeks later. They're really good quality little minis! I love them, they make perfect props for 1/4th or 1/3rd dolls!
Cool! Thank you so much for replying, roserising! Were the ones you got semi-transulent resin, or ones leaning more toward the opaque? Thanks again for sharing your experience! (:
I purchased several shortly after release, so in early January of 2023. Out of the semi-opaque yellow and mint resin in two milkshakes and the transparent red in a pie, none of them have yellowed at all. They still look great, and even came with enough add ins that I have extra 1/6 scale chocolate chips, banana slices, cherries, and even an extra cookie to use for my dolls. I’d definitely give them a try if you’re interested, they’re fun to make and are great little props. I will say that I keep mine stored in an opaque box with my other props when not using them, so they haven’t been sitting out in the light this whole time. I did leave one on the windowsill for maybe a week to be sure it cured fully (not a lot of sunlight in January where I live) and it was completely fine, though.
I have a few of the MGA kits. I did them a few months ago (the first one was probably in January or even December last year) and they have been sitting on my book shelf since then. I do see a little bit of yellowing, but mostly with my one opaque dessert. It's the parfait in the photo - and it's mostly mellowing and less out-and-out yellowing. The semi-translucent ones aren't too bad at all. With coloured resin, I also expect the colours to fade a little over time. One of the boba drinks (the "peach" one one the left) did lose a little bit of its peachy colour over time, but since the colours are subtle to start with, it's not horribly noticeable. As for scaling, they are at the very most 1/6. I don't see them fitting any larger doll and still look to scale. Thank you both VicVersal, and SPhosphate for sharing your experiences with these kits! Seems that the yellowing might vary a bit. I am glad these are smaller props, although I don't really plan on using them for doll related settings. I own 1:6 scale figures, a ”mature” tiny BJD, and way too many Barbie but I don't really enjoy setting up dioramas. I just love miniatures, and these seem like nicely detailed kits. Thanks for the photos, those were quite helpful as well, SPhosphate.
I've got both kinds - my favorite is the strawberry boba which is a translucent resin, but I also have some donuts and peanut butter banana toast that have the opaque resin. The one that ended up in a window for a few weeks was the opaque resin (iced donuts!).
I have a couple sitting in my windowsill, but behind the divider where they're not in direct direct sunlight. As far as I can tell, none of them have yellowed! I have a minor addiction to minature food items, so I have a good mix of the opaque and translucent resins. Also very excited that they've done a series two for both diner and cafe! Also kind of want the mini kitchen for my YoSDs and fashion dolls.
Thank you roserising, for replying to my additional questions! Kindly appreciated! (: MagnusVale, thank you for sharing your experiences with the various kinds of resin opacities! It's great to hear they'll be doing more series; hopefully they'll expand to other types of foods, as well, it would be cool to see candies and carnival type foods. n___n
One thing I do know about resin is it will work with any mold as long as it's silicone and there are plenty of melt candy and fondant molds that are the right size to be doll treats. It's also easy to get a 2 part silicone mold maker and follow (the right kind of) silicone+cornstarch mold making tutorials. And it's good to know about the UV resin yellowing. I almost started down that route but ended up getting old fashioned 2 part. Silicone tools are a big help.
This is all good information as I’ve recently bought some of the new lifestyle kits that have aquariums and plants. I’m still not sure about using the resin in the aquariums as the fish, which are very cute, tiny and detailed, just end up disappearing when the resin is applied. Or maybe it was the angle of the video I watched. Anyway, I’m really looking forward to getting my kits and seeing which ones I got. I’ve known about the food kits, but have been trying not to get any as I don’t need more things, but darn they look so cute and fun.
DollyKim, that's useful for people wanting to make any kind of resin props. My main point with this, is whether this company's resin yellows as fast as other UV resins, because the other miniatures that come in the kit, that are not resin, are detailed enough that I am interested in them. Anyone can make anything out of resin using a mold, for sure. That's how these dolls were created. These are just kits that have resin as part of the "gimmick," but already include other non-resin plastic pieces, that are tiny, cute and probably a good size for most fashion dolls. (: Kurogane, I hope you share your kits once you get them. I am also eyeing the mini fish tank and cactai kits, hard to get the ones you want though, but if the tiny non-resin parts are as detailed as they appear, then I guess it's a good purchase, even if the resin won't be of use to some of us. =^-^=
I got my mini lifestyle kits and then bought some of the diner series 2. The kits are fantastic! The details are amazing, even the packaging is adorable. With the lifestyle series I got the Betta fish, a clown fish, the set of two succulents in pots, and unfortunately three candle sets which one was a duplicate. I did find the terrarium set and cactus twins on eBay for a decent price (I hate having to do that, but with blind boxes, sometimes it’s more cost effective). I used some model railroad ‘dirt’ with pva glue to fill the pots and glue in the plants as I wanted to keep the potting soil packages intact as they are so darn cute. I haven’t done the fish as I’m still debating whether or not to use resin or set up the aquariums but have pretend water. The diner series I got was two lemon Bundt cakes, the party cake, strawberry sundae, banana split, and the ramen bowl. I’ve decided to mod the cakes and added blush to one of the Bundt cakes so it looks baked and painted the other chocolate. For the party cake I thought it looked odd with just a yellow cake with pink frosting on the tops of the two tiers, so I painted the whole cake white and did the pink glaze on the top of both layers. It looks really nice! I will take pictures when everything is finished. I’m waiting for the air dry clay I used to fill up the waffle and banana split bowls to dry so I can glue everything in, then use the resin glazes. I really wonder how these will look in a few years as the plastic that is used for the ice cream, cakes, and fruit parts is a softer rubbery stuff, not a hard plastic. Anyway, these are so much fun I see why they are hard to get. I want more!
Thank so much for your detailed experience kurogane! I'm having a hard time finding them locally as well. I might have to get them through Amzn, which I hate doing with toys but end up doing anyway. I don't need these in collector shape, so I don't mind -- probably can't get too beaten up in transit either, since they come i plastic balls. lol! DX Can't wait to see your customized ones! (:
