I've seen some beautiful faceups with a mettalic or glitter pain for eyeshadow. I NEED to do this on my dollie... but I don't know what to use. I don't want anything that may harm her. Any help is appreciated. Also, what type of pastel/chalks are reccommended? I'm heading to Michaels soon and want to get my faceup stuff, but I'm not really sure. And lastly, I know this may sound dumb, but I love the watercolor pencil eyebrows I've seen here on DOA. But, um... HOW do you USE a water color pencil? Thank you for answering my stupid NEWBIE faceup question!
The glitter that I've used before is mica powder mixed with a gloss (Like liquitex varnish). I got the powder from here: http://www.coastalscents.com/cfwebstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=35 Though mica powder can be mixed in just about anything, you can mix it into acrylic colors as well. For soft pastels I like to use Rembrandt, I've gotten some wonderful colors and smoothness from that brand. ^_^ Hope that helps!
Instead of buying a whole box of cheapish pastels, consider going for the more expensive artists ones which are often sold as individual colours. You can pick out the shades you want and get a better quality for teh same price as the box. Same thing for watercolour pencils. I just bought half a dozen faber castell artists quality pencils in the shades I wanted instead of a whole box of cheaper pencils. To use them you just sharpen and draw like you would with a normal pencil, but the trick is to keep the point very very sharp, I keep a pad of rough paper next to where I work and rub the pencil on it's sides to repoint the tip after every few strokes. I domy eyelashes teh same way too, but you do have to be obsessive about repointing the tip often for best results.
Here is thread about different brands of pastels and watercolor pencils. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108998 Have fun doing your faceup!
I love mica I use it on my glass beads the darker shades tend to discolour when heated though (blue black turns kindda coppery), I'm not sure how they colour natural mica, but I would wonder if darker colours might stain if left for long periods silver etc are fine though , never had a problem with those
You can use Metalic Colors from Acrilex or Shine Pearl Powder from Volks . I use an different kind of glitter and mix him with the acrylic to make mettalic paint.
if you get the cheap crafts acrylics (they work really well contrary to popular belief XP) have metallic colors, and a wide selection of glosses, shiny colors, metalics, glow in the darks, pearl sheens etc. Just make sure to make the distinction between opaque and semi opaque. Micheals especially has huge racks of them! they usually come in little bottles. hope this helps!
http://www.dharmatrading.com sells Jacquard Lumiere, it's an amazing light body metallic acrylic that comes in a lot of colors, I use it for a lot of things.
You can also buy metallic pastels. Sennelier makes them. They are available in more than a dozen colors, plus "metal" colors such as gold, silver, copper, etc. I used the gold, copper, and bronze on my Thistlewing. I applied them lightly to my doll because I wanted a soft effect. You can layer more for a more profound look.
Oh wow! That looks amazing! I'm going to have to look those up!!! ETA: Ok, I really looked for those pastels, but the only metallic pastels I can find are all oil. And oil is bad for their little resin faces. Am I just missing it?
I have a question. Will the watercolor pencil and pastel wash off? I have heard people applying acrylics on their dolls which will probably leave a permanent face up. But I love the soft touch of some other doll's face up and it looks airbrush. Does pastel achieve the same touch?
I was only able to find oil pastels in metallic colors as well. Oil pastels are bad for resin, right?
I believe the metallic pastels lossefaire was talking about were these: http://www.dickblick.com/zz200/36/ They are non-oil based, soft pastels. The "metallic" ones are the "Iridescent" colors at the bottom.
The only kind of pastels I can buy in singles in town are NuPastels. I don't know if they make any "metallic" ones or not.
You can find pearl powders in the scrapbooking and stamping section of hobby lobby. :3 I mix it with my matte acrylic sealer and my gloss sealer. It was about $15 for four small pots, but it came in blue, red, purple, and green- and a really awesome brush that I use for blush now.
Edit: NuPastels are "chalk" pastels. And if they're anything like other Prismacolors products, they're super dense pigment-wise. Other people use them and seem to like them quite a bit. I was thinking of ArtStix, which are basically the lead out of Prismacolors pencils. I've heard of people using the Prismacolors pencils for eyebrows and eyeliner, but I imagine that they probably stain.
Has anyone ever used Van Gogh pearlescent pastels for faceups? (http://www.dickblick.com/zz200/15/ , the two bottom left pictures in the thumbnails) I saw them at the art store today when I was looking for regular pastels, and just had to buy them. They look like they'd be good for shimmery lips. Anyone tried them?
Heavens, thanks for the link to those luminescent pastels! Been looking for the non-oil variety for a while now and had almost given them up as unfindable. *happy fox... off to buy pastels *
Bumping up this very old thread to ask... are there any other options for shimmer/glittery/iridescent/pearlescent pastels out there? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for doing nice shimmery eyeshadow?
I've been wondering about glitter as well. Would Glitter glue be okay on the resin? Also to use it as means to stick small jewels on their face?
I love Townsend pastels for metallic eyeshadow effects. They have a huge range of subtle iridescent, metallic and pearl pastels that you can buy by the individual stick and they are luxuriously soft but still very dry. I have also used the Volks pearl powders, but I find the loose powder to be more clumpy and harder to control. Glitter glue would be safe if it's just white glue with glitter in it. If it is not a PVA glue, it may have damaging solvents in it.
I've been looking at the Townsend pearlescent pastels myself, I saw them here = http://www.fineartstore.com/Catalog...el/a/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost,UnitCost I wonder if they are sold in sets? Also, is it safe to mix in regular fine glitter into the shaved pastels for the effect?
I wouldn't suggest mixing glitter into the pastel. You will have to seal the pastel to keep it from rubbing off, if you seal over the glitter, it won't be glittery and shiny anymore. Even shimmery pastels have to be lightly sealed over to keep the shimmer. I tend to apply them at the very end and then put a light coat of MSC to keep them from smudging away, but not so much that it mattes away the shimmer.
They are sold in sets. Regular (even ultra fine) glitter tends to be too large and look like specks of dirt. It really has to be a powder before it looks like it's the right scale. Larger metallic spots are better achieved with paint and a very fine brush.
Thank you St. James, but I only see the 'Metallic' set? I was hoping to get the Pearlescent set only And those seem to only be sold individually? Or perhaps I'm missing something >.<
Someone here said they used pearl powder found in the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby, so I checked out the scrapbooking supplies at my local craft store and ended up with this...does anyone know if it will work in faceups? I'm annoyed that it says nothing on the packaging about what it's made of and therefore whether or not it's safe to put on dolls (on top of MSC of course). Edit: Slightly off topic, but I also got some Master's Touch gloss varnish that says "acrylic medium" on the bottle, and if anyone could tell me whether that's safe as well, I would truly appreciate it!
If thay are just plain dry powders, they should be just fine to use. The only time I've seen that kind of shimmer powders that would be a problem are the ones made specifically for wax panting, as they contain small amounts of oil to help the bind to the wax. So if these are marketed as all purpose glitter powders they should be fine. It says "shimmer powder mix-ins" on the package. Do you have any clue about what they are supposed to be mixed in with. If it's any type of water based products, the risk of there being oil in there is very slim. If you are unsure, you can do an oil stain test by putting some of the glitter on a piece of paper and leave it there for a day or so. If a wet looking stain developes under the glitter, that is likely oil absorbing into the paper. (The same test can be used for anything from eye putty to wig care products.)
Update: I just managed to find this product online and the name of it is "3ct Wax Seal Metals Shimmer Powder". And here is the description: Now I'm concerned because apparently it's meant for use with wax. It's frustrating because there was absolutely none of this info on the packaging. I'm doing the test on the piece of paper just to be sure, but I might be returning this and looking for something else...
I use PearlEx powders to get the metallic effects it sounds like you’re looking for. They’re just mica powders so no oil or wax or anything like that, so they’re resin safe. Virtually all of my faceups have them
