~20cm Dolls Messing about with clay!

Jun 15, 2020

    1. Hi ^o^

I don't know why, but I decided to break out the clay and try making a one off absolutely tiny doll for fun. Here's a pic of the base, unsanded, uncarved, very in need of work 2 body segments I started with. I have 1 more to make, and oh no I have decided to change the jointing system because I have planned literally nothing.

Absolutely do not do what I did and start making a doll without doing any sketches. I don't really have regrets, because I am really just playing around. It's incredibly likely that this will be the only clay doll I make!

The clay I'm using is air dry fimo, because it's cheap and easy to get in the UK. (I know people recommend sculpey, but that brand is less common here, and the air dry variety is not available at all, unless you want to import it). Considering how brutal I was ripping the form out, I am surprised at how well it held up! The air dry clay of my youth would have crumbled, without a doubt. But this was hardy enough that the tail didn't fall off or anything! XD If anything was going to topple, it would have been that bobble tail.

I know the face looks funny XD I have to carve the mouth properly, and add a bit more shape to the snout. I really don't use clay, so this is an adventure. There's a lot of decorative touches to add. I want to tidy up the inside of the doll too, so it's less ragged. I also have to take a knife to the little butt to change the body joints, which I hope won't destroy it.

Okay, ramble over. I'm being deliberately mysterious about what it is. XD Hopefully this little dude will be cleaned up soon!

    2. Good luck on your sculpting journey! No plan just makes it more exciting

    3. Thank you XD

I wish I had more to show, but I haven't had time to sculpt more. And now the weather's turned hot as hell, which isn't going to help. This clay dries fast!

I did carve down the tail end (I feel a bit bad calling it the butt piece XD ) although it was more like sawing with a craft knife. I took almost a centimetre off! I was surprised by how sturdy the clay is. This stuff can take some punishment! And it carves quite well. (I'm sure there are better clays, but I am having a good time with this fimo)

I'm gonna try find some scrappy brushes and see if painting on a thick slip layer might help even the surface out before sanding. And waiting on some glitter to make his eyes look like a starry sky. :D I'm just using some cabochons instead of traditional eyes.

Way too hyped about this silly little fellow XD
