Materials Materials for sculpting- DAS (need some help!)

Sep 25, 2005

    1. Hi! i went to Michaels (huge craft store with a gargantuin amount of stuff) and i bought myself a thing of super sculpey. while i was there i bought this other type of air drying clay called "Das" i liked the consistancy, but i don't know if it will be any good on doll sculpting. does anyone know anything about this stuff? if you do, share the info! i would be greatful! thank you all!

    2. Das is an air drying clay, rather pourous a brittle when dry...its not very good for a finished piece, and would not make a good master to cast from. Pretty much play with it for practice and sculpt the doll from some thing else.

I love air dry clay too, but things always seem to fall apart when they dry >__<

    3. Yeah, that DAS stuff is really weird. I got some a really long time ago, and didn't like how it performed. I remember it being very chalky, and it set up too fast for me to finish what I was working on. Polymer, or even regular clay (the kind you have to put in a kiln) would be much better. To my surprise, I found out a lot of professional doll makers use regular clay. I don't know how they do it!

    4. i would love to use regular clay to sculpt my dolls...

...except i dont have a kiln nor access to one. OH WELL, super sculpey it is XD

    5. I find DAS very frustrating to work with, and it doesn't really dry nice

      sorry to be so negative!

regular clay is the best sculpting medium I've ever used for this purpose as it doesn't sqish into the wrong shope when you try to do anything does that make sense >_<

I also like salt dough as it behaves very similar to clay, but will not last as a finished piece

the Eberhard Faber light clay (it's got a picture of a bird puppet on it) is wonderful stuff, if you want air drying clay. very light and you can use water, and it is very smooth, also dries quite strong considering it's weight

    6. I made a complete doll out of DAS the trick is to handle it for about ten mintues (keep some water around so it doesn't dry) and once the clay is together there should be no problem with it. Make sure you coat it with a sealant , because if you get it wet and it isn't sealed it will turn into "clay" again. I'll post the pictures of my beauty as soon as the mods approve it

    7. random quesetion what do you mean by when the mods approve?

    8. you have to get the doll approved by the moderators before you can post it up...it's all in the announcement at the top

    9. Cripes! I never read that top post, so I never knew about the policy about emailing the mods to approve a pic....I hope they can forgive me! Please forgive me!! I promise to read all *read first* posts before doing anything from now on!

    10. Das clay is pretty nice sometimes..I made a head out of das clay, combined with artista clay, which is a very light, very easy to handle clay which is used for claying very small parts, as well as doll faces..I made the basics of the head with das clay, and then the details and a few layers to make it all smooth with artista.

it was just for a school project by the way, not a bjd, but it was a human-looking head and I suppose it would be possible to cast from it..it's really, really hard after just 2 days of drying. If you want to, I could send you a few pictures..the head isn't painted yet, but oh well..won't post it on the boards since it's not a bjd or anything..

    11. wow, thank you all for the info! i've found that i do like the supersculpey better, so i think i'm just going to use that! i'm also going to use some porcelain. yay!

Cryogenesis: i was looking at your sculpt. i'm so jealous of you talent i could just stab you with a spork! i love your doll! she has one of the most lovely bodies i've seen! are you considering casting her?

Babytarragon: i've used EF before and i very much like it, only it's a little hard to find at the craft stores by me. usually they always have sculpey and fimo, which is this other german-made stuff. do you know if they sell big packages of EF online?

      Danke!

    12. sorry I've only seen it in the small bags in craft shops, not sure which online shops would have it. >_<
