Material for glasslike eyes

Mar 3, 2015

    1. Okay so for the doll I want to make I basically need custom eyes but the stuff I have tried has not gone great. I tried a normal epoxie resin and it kept making stickcasts no matter how close to the directions I followed. So I tried a smaller kit for jewely and it worked but I am getting a shit ton of bubbles still even after like really extensive bubble removal. I also tried "modge podge dimension magic" but that is just a complete waste of time.

The epoxie is my best bet so I will keep trying but I was just wondering if there was anything else that would produce a similar effect (has to be a clear thing that is shiny and smooth when hardened). I live in a dorm right now so like I can't have anything big/dangerous like a polymer clay oven and it can't be super pricey either. Anyone have any ideas?

    2. How about a clear resin that hardens with UV light? You can get a UV nail light to harden them. That technique is shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XE__rSlUOu0

Polymer clay can also be baked in a toaster oven, though I don't know if you'd be allowed something like that in a dorm room.

    3. we can't have anything like an oven in our room but maybe the UV light thing? I will have to look at the cost of that.

    4. You might want to try something like Magic Glos. It's a UV-cured resin so you can use a nail light like HP suggested or just set it in the sunlight for a bit. It takes some getting used to but it was specifically made for doming jewelry projects.

    5. I just recently heard of this myself and am STILL waiting on my first tube ordered two weeks ago to arrive!! There's another tutorial on youtube by a woman who uses it and says she didn't like the results with the UV light so she just puts them in direct sunlight to cure. That's the method I want to try. Of course, Lisa Pavelka herself (maker of Magic Glos) says direct sunlight means outside in the sunlight not in a windowsill. I am likely to try it both ways just to see for myself.

    6. how long in the sunlight would it take? It is realllyy cold where I am at so it might be hard to do for me. (if you could link me to the video that would be great also!)

    8. ty I actually got the stuff last night and it worked really great! I dunno if this is a good idea yet in the longrun but like I also tried an idea of my own: I put high gloss top coat for nails after the resin cured to make the results even more shiny!

    9. Just be careful with the nail polish topcoat - yours probably worked okay but certain ones definitely do not - as evidenced by the eyes sitting on my keyboard that I tried doing the other day with clear nail polish (Seche Vite) on top... the nail polish shrunk like, a LOT, so rather than a pretty clear drop on top, they look all, well, pruney.

    10. Mine actually had good results and I haven't noticed anything bad yet with the top coat I used.
