Esthetics Masking a doll for blushing

May 31, 2023

    1. A while ago I found a post or a comment thread where someone explained and showed how they mask off the joints to prepare a doll for torso/ body blushing. I thought I saved it, but I can't seem to find it now when I try searching for it anywhere on the forum. I have a doll I need to do some torso blushing on soon, so I was hoping to review it again before I did that.
Can anyone help me find it? Or does anyone have suggestions or advice on what to use to mask off the joint areas when working on torso blushing?

    2. I usually do full body blushing for my dolls, so I don't mask off the other areas because I want all the body to get equal amounts of fixative. However, I have done partial repaints on OT heads a lot, and tiny ones at that. I find just about anything can work for masking off areas, including kneading erasers (really good for masking off tiny eyes, like on action figures). I usually use a piece of plastic wrap, or grocery store bags (that are re-used, but cleaned prior to using them for doll painting). I just cut pieces of it, and shapes out of it depending on what I am trying to mask off. I tape the plastic to itself wrapped around the area that I am masking and that works really well. I have also done so with reproposed pieces of paper, like plain old computer paper, because I spray extremely light layers of MSC, as I am stingy when it comes to using that stuff. (:

Hope that helps, in the meantime, and I hope you're able to find the thread you're looking for! I know all about bookmarking specific webpages or websites and then not ever finding them ever again. n___n

    3. I have the doll unstrung because I dyed him, so I only need to mask off his joints really. I'm just too lazy to do a full body blushing because his legs aren't really going to be seen since he'll be wearing pants, but his outfit has an open cut top xD

For when you do tape off areas, what kind of tape do you use? I've used scotch tape to keep plastic wrap in plastic to protect the face while I sculpted ear mods, but I'm not sure if that would just pull up any sealant that got on it more than say painter's tape or washi tape might.

    4. I find blue painter's tape is just fine for what you're describing. I've never had a problem with it leaving residue but if it did, a little rub with a magic eraser would remove it.

If the sealant does flake up off easily, it may have been sprayed during high humidity, or too close to the resin, too "wetly". You can magic eraser off that flaky area, clean it with a drop of soap and water, and when it's dry seal it again.

(One other alternative is to whip up a batch of dye the color you're blushing with, and do the limb ends and joint peanuts in that color, kind of ombre'd on. It's a bit fiddly but the result is blushing that doesn't chip easily.)

    5. I never use tape alone. That's why I go for the plastic wrap or plastic produce bags you get at the grocery store. It's easy to just cut off a piece as big as I need, and I tape that plastic piece to itself. I am usually masking painted or sealed areas, so I don't want anything getting damaged, the wrapping plastic around the masked off piece helps me to avoid using tape on the area itself. Hope that helps and good luck. (:
