Manly Men or Gentle Boys doll preference?

Mar 6, 2019

    1. I'm team soft boys all the way!

    2. Me too

    3. I like both. One of my doll head is manly and the other one looks like he's still a boy. Well, I think I preffer to buy manly sculpts more nowadays.

    4. I'd eventually like to say "both," but I have painfully few boy dolls who're all old as dirt and as such definitely predate the "manly men" craze that has swept the BJD world. I'm not super enamored by ALL THE MUSCLES, but I do like my collection to be diverse and that will undoubtedly one day include a guy who's built like he's starring in an Avengers movie.

    5. I lovee gentle boys <3 My next doll is going to be a boy too I think.

    6. I like both, but I'd love to add a more manly one to my collection someday. I don't have a problem with muscle as long as they aren't built like he-man (that'd be such a pain to make clothes for). I'm having a hard time finding one I like though. Most of the guys seem to either look like they belong to an idol group or have some odd scowl or scar/tattoo/odd feature. Someday I'll find the right one...

    7. Same here I love them too!

    8. Manly men. And I'd recommend Immortaliy of Soul's Jade or Nebel wholeheartedly. You can create some awesome manly faceups with those sculpts.

    9. I prefer the soft, more pretty boys. However, I wouldn't rule out a more masculine doll if I had a particular character in mind.

    10. Manly men all the way. I really love the more realistic looking male dolls; sharp, chiseled features rather than soft and rounded. That look also just aligns with the characters I'm trying to create though, so a couple of my guy dolls might have softer looking features but they still won't have that anime-esque or little boy look to them.

I don't connect to those kinds of dolls, I can certainly love and appreciate them in someone else's crew but they don't work for me. I can't get passed how baby-faced they look and most faceups only help age them so much. Those looks are just made weirder for me when those same baby faces have bodies that are muscled or even ripped. A sculpt that barely looks like it graduated preschool shouldn't have a six pack. lol

    11. I like both, but I guess I do tend to lean more towards the "gentle boys" type dolls, especially since I tend to just lean towards dolls that look cute over cool in general.

    12. My collection has a bunch of soft boys and pretty boys, but I do like the look of manly bjds. I would love to add a few to my collection. I'm thinking of getting a Granado at some point.

    13. I don't own any yet, but I like both manly men and gentle boys, and the whole scale between them, I think each type lends itself well to different kinds of characters, so I have some of each on my wishlist.

    14. Strong features and prominent noses or unusual noses if not prominent. But the guys don't have to be particulary manly at all. I tend to be firmly on fantasy and semi-realistic side -- these kinds of sculpts usually aren't very testosteron charged, anyway:) I will happily use strong female sculpt for a male doll and vice versa as long as it's features, shape etc. fit the character I've planed.

    15. i really love both but it depends on character, ideally i like a guy doll to fall in the middle of the 2 someone whos got the right amount of both feaures

    16. Both, all, every!

All kinds of guys--I love the variety. The more the merrier! :XD:

    17. I like more feminine/gentle male dolls! That being said, I prefer female dolls and don't have any boys so I don't know how relevant my opinion is.

    18. I prefer softer boys when it comes to dolls that I buy, but I like to look at all the other manly masculine dolls photos although I don't imagine myself buying one, at least for now

    19. I like both, but I do want my male dolls who are adults in my doll world here to look like adults.
The youngsters should look like boys.

    20. I lean more towards a muscular look, but I dont mind if the head/face itself has slightly softer lines. If they look like a teenager it's too soft though :XD: hard to explain but there's often a fine line between a ripped but androgynous man vs a 15 y/o on steroids in this hoppy

    21. Hard lean toward the "gentle boys" side here, myself. I have a preference for androgynous males in general and my OCs reflect this to a degree. I do have one (1) who's a bit more on the masculine side of things with his slightly sharper features, and that's made things a little tricky when looking for a MSD to shell him so he'll match my other boys in height. There's plenty of SD sculpts that would suit him, but alas, those are too big for me to be able to comfortably tote around haha.

    22. It depends. In general, I don't like the super manly faces for dolls and prefer the let's call it 'bishounen-look'
But depending on the character I have in mind, I would also lean towards a more manly face, but not overly wide jaw structure if that makes sense?

    23. Firstly, great topic. XD Its always fun to answer these types of questions and fairly interesting to read about others preference too.
Well, if one would happen to see my dolls in person they could easily tell that I have a preference for manly-looking BJD.. but believe it or not, cute looking boys used to be my eye candy. About nine years ago before I started into the hobby, the first male BJD that caught my attention was Crobidoll Zion, which I ended up never buying because I was still a student back then living off my parents. I could remember telling myself I would buy him as my first doll when I finally land a job, but I never expected my preference to have drastically changed in which I ended up going for Ringdoll Sol.

    24. You know, I posted this and I ended up getting neither a manly man nor a gentle boy. I got a pretty girl.

    25. I tend to prefer the more mature guy sculpts but some of my favorite guy dolls have been the younger looking ones. My biggest bias is I really like mature “age” dolls as a whole so even when I get smaller dolls I like them to look mature. Typically this limits my guy dolls to the bigger scale sd dolls but I have been considering getting a dollshe fashion line boy to go with my minifees. I do not like the look of the minifee boys but I do love my feeple60 boy. However I do think I would enjoy the smaller dollshe guys.

    26. I definitely prefer more masculine sculpts, though I don't have any boys; nor do I really want one. xD But yes, if I had to pick they have to be the kind that wouldn't be mistaken for a girl doll; LOL.

    27. I'm sure there will be a day when I need both, but for the part it's manly men (which is hard to find in the 1/4th scale) or rather male dolls that don't look like children because I don't really have children characters.

    28. For me, it's character dependent. I have some that are sleekly muscled (Dollshe) and some that are serious gym-rat bodies (Iple, Granado, etc). Some have almost no muscle definition at all. Some are between the two extremes. Of course this all means that I have literally dozens of ever so slightly different patterns to accommodate all these body shapes. For faces, I have stylized boys as well as more realistic sculpts to some that are pure fantasy and couldn't be mistaken for anything remotely human (Argonautica Little Kio, Akhmel Nathan, Miracle Doll Snake demon). Again, it's what the character demands that is what I buy.

I have 2 that sort of mess with a person's expectations as their faces are very soft/gentle looking but their bodies are muscled, 6-pack abs. But, that's also part of their character as well. Oleander is an assassin in the Immortal Army. He's very out and has definite feminine leanings in his face and choice of colours/clothes. But his body is all muscle because of what he does for a living. Khale has a very soft/gentle face and prefers pastel colours, white or black clothes in flowing ancient Chinese/Japanese/Korean inspired styles. His body is muscled because of military training he went through when he was a teen and just kept up the exercise regime.

    29. I greatly prefer more 'realistic' style masculine sculpts, but if theres a nice faceup on a prettyboy type one, it can really win me over. Like, for example, I LOVE Doll Zone's Carter, with the default faceup on the one eye closed version.

    30. I'm definitely a member of the "Gentle Boys" Club ♡

I do prefer a cool bishounen kind of vibe over a straight babyface though. I adore the korean boyband aesthetic of most Switch dolls for example (and I'm not even into K-Pop x'D) But I like when they're cool but soft - does that make sense!? xD

    31. I love pretty boys ... even my older looking males always end up being very slim/androgynous sculpts. I think I prefer them because of years of anime watching, or maybe because they have a bit more versatility in terms of being able to wear both masculine and feminine style

    32. Both?
      Both.
      Both is good.

If could post any gif on this website I swear it would be this one! XD

I don't have a lot of funds for this hobby so softer looking male dolls always appealed to me because I felt I could dress them up in a sweet style fashion. The more manly men models can make for a super-model looking androgyny which I also find really fantastic. Basically I like both, and I don't like to be pinned in by style or gender-norms is what I think I'm trying to get at albeit in a crazily round-about way.

    33. I prefer the more softer, teen style dolls when it comes to more masculine sculpts. The muscles and highly defined features on male dolls are a huge turn off for me

    34. I am really addicted to adult masculine dolls like Ringdoll because they are fitting perfect for my story characters but since I saw the Fairyland male motion line O found a mad body I love sadly the headsculpt doesn't fit my aesthetic.

    35. I personally prefer mature bishonen type men. Ultra masculine faces are kinda squicky for me... but at the same time so are really young babyface types. I prefer them to look like adults, but... pretty. Slim jaw, high cheekbones, etc. I also think it's partially due to anime influence. If you know yaoi, then I prefer more the stereotypical cool bishie seme look than the stereotypical cute uke look.

    36. I've always been a sucker for pretty boys. The prettier, the better. The bodybuilder/musclebound/hypermasculine sort of guy has never been a turn-on for me.

    37. I like both, I just prefer them to look more on the realistic side.

    38. I love both types, but I buy only sweet boys. I really admire big masculine guys, but they're too heavy for me and I don't feel comfortable holding them, so I prefer watching the photos of muscular bjd men and keeping cute boys.

    39. I like both? Haha, I mean I really like Soom Idealians cause they have gentle/cute faces but it's also masculine. I think I lean more to manlier bjd sculpts, in that broad shoulders and athleticism is shown on the body sculpt, and that it's not too thin/lean.

    40. I generally like both though lately I’ve been looking at more realistic mature male sculpts. I think a good mix of both is nice to have though.

    41. That's hilarious, yet exactly true. (Depends though)

At first I was thinking manly because the first ever doll I fell in love with and also my first. Iplehouse HID falcon. He's beautiful and BIG. Muscular and full of veins.
But my very next boy is an iplehouse Leonard. He's much more of a pretty boy. So I guess I'm guilty of both.

    42. I was wondering this same thing. I generally like the look of muscular built male dolls, but honestly it depends on the "partner" that they will have (if they aren't single being their wild and free self). I like my partners to look compatible. For a time, it took me awhile to settle on the right companion for my Yoko. She is a soft spoken and shy character and I wanted her to have a boyfriend who has similar traits, but a little bold and adventurous. I ultimately settled on LUTS Bory on a Model Delf body. The body is somewhat slim and a bit muscular, but not chiseled. Since they are to be 18 and 19yrs old, he still has a sweetness to his face, but definitely male. Kinda like the 'BTS boy band' look Lol I also like the moody artist kinda look, which for me is a softer boy aesthetic.

    43. I prefer a more youthful look where the sculpt looks like the they are in their late teens or young adult. I do like that bishonen look as long as there is some maturity to the sculpt, so it’s not too young or androgynous looking. While I find muscular sculpts beautiful, I find that they are a little too much for me.

    44. For me its a mix of both and completely depends on character. I have many characters floating around that are manly men yet the only ones I actually have in doll form are the soft boys. Why exactly it ended up that way, I'm not sure. :)

    45. I love Dollshe boys and I have since I started in the hobby. I also love the Soom and Ringdoll men. Lately after obtaining my Iplehouse grail I’ve started gravitating towards more masculine men and I am interested in getting a Granado man next. I think my taste varies and it depends on what I am inspired by at the time I want a doll.

    46. I definitely prefer more "manly men" as sculpts, but there aren't a lot out there that fit my specific tastes which is why I stick to female dolls.

    47. I think my Dollshe David is probably my manliest man.

And then on the flipside I have a few super effeminate boys.

Nabarro Boy's Har is probably in the middle because he's not super femme but he has like soft lines going for him.

I like a little of everything I guess

    49. I’m a fan of soft and gentle boys. I think they look sweet and you can dress them up a bit more cute. I think the more masculine sculpts look cool and handsome but they’re not really my aesthetic I guess.

    50. I prefer manly dolls but not too manly or realistic. My all time favorites are Soom ID men. They are jus

But recently I like Volks DD boys...

    52. I only own the boys!! I have 2 HID Falcon sculpt - 1 is paired with David Kuncci & the other one is with Granado Enoch. So mostly man but some softness in the features.
I also own a La Legende Ludwig who’s searching for his softer feature boyfriend

    53. It depends on the look I'm going for. I have a group of characters I want to turn into dolls. One of the boys I want are more feminine while the other two are more masculine. I don't really like the childish look for my "adult" dolls though.

    54. I like manly men more, but I'm not sure if I'll ever get one. I collect minis and I'm yet to see a really manly sculpt. Aside from 50cm dolls like Souldoll Vito and Soom Idealian 51, which I love, but the problem with those lines is that their heads are too small for them to look good with my existing crew. I might start a separate collection someday, but I'd prefer to keep everyone together.

All that said, I do love my gentle boy to bits! He's not going to be my only boy doll, either, that's for sure.

    55. If you're looking for 50cm boys, Dream Valley have a few nice ones. Two of their boys are on my wishlist, Vine and Serene.

    56. I can appreciate both aesthetic-wise, though I lean more towards the gentle look, definitely :) I like the androgynous appearance, boys who can pull off frilly pumpkin shorts, and girls who gives that Oscar vibe (my love). Swapping sets of clothes? Yes please.

    57. I think “soft” bjd boys are super cute but I have never felt the need to own one.
Personally, I prefer “manly men” more, which is why I like Ringdoll’s dolls a lot.
They have “manly men” and also “manly men” with some soft features (ex. Xie Lian), or at least I consider them like that.
It all depends on personal taste, and I think both are lovely, but “manly men” sculpts are my favorite.

    58. All of my males are gentle souls. I would prefer if they were not quite SO feminine, but androgynous is ok to a degree. I think it has a lot to do with my experiences with real life human males. I grew up with 3 macho brothers, and my ex was a big burly "manly-man" I can do without more testosterone in my life, thank you very much.
I was attracted to BJDs because I was into the images of males in the Final Fantasy games. I am attracted to their somewhat feminine faces, even if their characters are not exactly soft.

Edited to add: my boys are all dressed in regular guy style clothing. I like their somewhat feminine faces, but they are still regular guys in my mind.

    59. I have a mix. Most of my dolls were picked with a specific character in mind, and thus a sculpt/body that would be fitting... some are pretty buff.

    60. After I got older I started to prefer manly dudes xD Like, hairy manly dudes lol, buuuut nowadays I also appreciate more feminine, softer kind of boys and even androgynous. I have had that problem with bjd boys, since I prefer smaller bjds but older looking scupts... but I was going to buy a feminine-looking boy for myself that Luts makes, I only didnt buy it cause of money :P But yeah yay for diversity I guess
