Wearables Male oni -Akebono's wig (11/29/2025)

Apr 27, 2022

    1. Hello everyone!

It was a long time since I last opened a project journal. But I realized I had open a thread for my female Oni in 2016, and that it was a great injustice : I own male ogres since nearly as long as female ones. They are currently 7 (two are only heads but they will have their own bodies one day).
In order of characters age, they are named Gokkan, Fubuki, Nishibi, Matsuyama, Akebono, Ikazuchi and Yamaji.

      What I'd like to do:

      Gokkan:
      Mods To Do:
      • sand seams lines on the body (when he will have one again. I sold the previous one)
      Aesthetics To Do:
      • faceup (finished on 11/05/2022)
      • tattoos
      • manicure and pedicure (new hands bought on 11/04/2022)

      Crafting To Do:
      • Warai-jō mask for Gokkan (complete but given to Matsuyama, so I need to redo an other mask for Gokkan)
      • Wig for Gokkan - wig cap is in progress since one or two years ^^'
      • Sew him outfits, something more simple than what the others wear.

      Fubuki:

      • Tengu mask for Yamaji (done in 2019)
      • Yamaji's wig (done in 2017)

Fubuki is my oldest oni male doll (in terme of doll and not of character's age). He is an Another Secret Acheron on Popodoll 68 body with Doll Legend hands and DollChateau feet. I got him in 2016, and I've nearly finished his customization over years.
I've painted his faceup back in 2016. He was originaly supposed to go on a Ringdoll NS body, but I finally liked him more on a Popodoll 68body I got later. But that explaned why you can see ringdoll hands on his faceup photos.

      Faceup finished:

With wig, made one year later:

I let him in this stage (faceup and wig done, but nothing else) until 2019, where I found both time and will to paint his mask and tattoos.

Here is a picture of the jô mask:

And here an awful phone picture of the tattoo in progress:

Next time I will show the work on one of Fukuki's son, Yamaji!
      Thank you for viewing :)

    2. oh wow, your dedication to this project is amazing! Fubuki's faceup and tattoos are to die for, I was particularly blown away by the linework WIP on his back tattoos :D thank you for sharing!

    3. Your work is absolutely amazing and great inspiration to boot!! I am absolutely in awe of your line work on that tattoo.

      • x 1
    4. Drop dead gorgeous! I love your faceup style, and the detail in his tattoo is incredible! I'm really excited to see the other guys, your work is lovely!

      • x 1
    5. Your talent for skin texture is wild! was this airbrushed initially?

      • x 1
    6. Much respect for all your work!
Also it's encouraging to see another person with large-ish spaces between projects go back and finish them. It's inspiring!

    7. I'm so happy to see a journal for these :D !
Your progress are always amazing. The texture on the face is really delicate, I really appreciate how much dimension you gave to the face with your faceup too

The tattoo is simply beautiful, and very detailed. It must have taken so much work, but the result was well worth it

I hope you find time to work on your other customizations ~

    8. I don't say such things lightly, but you really should have your own doll exhibition one of these days. Your consistency in your art, imagination and execution alike, over the years is truly mind-blowing. I am glad you decided to show these projects here.

    9. Thank you very much for your kind comment!

Thanks a lot! This linework took me a looooong time XD

Thank you very much! Here is the next guy, and the only other one to be tatooed yet. I've years behind my on my personal tattoos schedule.

Thank you! Nope, I don't have an airbrush. If your question is about how I withened the head, I used a sponge and white acrylique XD

Thank you! Haha yeah I'm so slow on my project. I love having a lot of different projects in the same time, and I'm not well organized :sweat

And I'm so happy to see you here!
Than you very much for your compliments :)

That's a huge compliment, thank you! Sadly I fear my dolls are not enough to be "finished" do make an exhibit. And I must admit I have absolutely no clue to how organized such an exhibit.
Anyway, thank you so much for you kind words!

Today I show you my second nearly finished male oni, Yamaji! Yamaji is Fubuki's second son. In term of doll, he is a Miracledoll Baiye on Jie doll body (currently with one spiridoll hand, but that's because his right hand fell apart and I didn't take the time to string it again). I got him in 2017. I did nearly all his customization in 2017, aside his mask that I did in 2019.
Currently he is looking like this:

Like I said, I painted his faceup and did his wig right after the makeup in 2017 :

Then I painted his tattoos some months later. You can see they are older than Fubuki's, because I less successful with their shoulder-to-bust transitions. Also the body has no skin effect, as I was a little too lazy to make them.

Two years later, I crafted his Tengu mask. This tengu has a mistake : I make it ears! :doh But it is nice looking nonetheless.

      The mask unpainted:

      And painted:
I need to refresh his body blush, and maybe redo a little his tattoos on his shoulders, or maybe redo the arms completely, I dunno.

Next time I'll show you Matsuyama or Ikazuchi! They are both unfinished (one doesn't have manicure and tattoos, the other has no wig and no tattoos), but at least they have their bodies XD.

      • x 11
    10. @Follow-the-Wind Stunning work again! I can't imagine how long the tattoos take, they're so detailed and I can't for the life of me figure out how you blended out some of the gray parts behind the flowers so smoothly, you're magic!

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what material are the masks made from? It's got such a cool natural texture, I've not seen a clay like that (besides maybe when I get on a pottery video kick on YT, potters clay has more texture than the air dry stuff I'm used to).

    11. @MonochromeNocturne Thank you for the compliments! My masks are made of woodformo. It's a wood clay available in Japan. I like a lot its texture too!

      • x 2
    12. Impressive work once again! The wig has a very successful hairline (Back then, I was curious to do a wig with pulled back hair too but never managed ^^; ) -- What fibers did you use? It looks quite natural with the flyaways

You really put so much care into making your customizations, it's amazing!

    13. Thank you very much! I used kidassia and alpaga. Kidassia are more thick and more realistic IMO, but alpaga is better for the finishing touches.

Today I'm going to show you Matsuyama, my DF-A 2018 gift head on Volks SDgou body! He is not as advanced than Fubuki and Yamaji. I have done his faceup, reused a wig, and sewed two outfits for him (a third is in progress ^^).

Here is a picture of him before faceup, right after his mod (I added horns):

I was lucky this wig fits him, as my wigs are made on dolls heads and are usually not switchable between my dolls. Then I painted his faceup:

And now he will stay like this until I find time and will to paint his tattoos. I may changed his hands for jointed hands - I like jointed hands better- that's why I didn't paint his manicure while I was painting his face.
But as he is my only 65cm ogre, he needs a whole wardrobe... so I have sewed this outfit to begin with:

Yukata + haori, very simple. It was the first outfit I sewed since many years ^^'
But I like better outfits composed by haori, short kimono and hakama. So I sew quickly a second outfit for him:

Currently I'm sewing a third outfit, a beige and brown one. Pictures soon!

    14. I got Gokkan's body! It's a Dollchateau one. It is too young (bleeeeh) and a little too pink. The pink is not a big deal, I will slighlty blush both head and neck and it will work. But the young aspect of the body disturb me. I think he will never be naked... or I need to heavy mod it. Don't know what I will decided. Here is he (with clothes XD):

And I begin his faceup :

    15. I love the age you've captured in the face! Question about your tattoo linework: what kind of tool are you using? I have a hard time imagining it done with a fine brush, but that is because I lack the skill? Anyway, I am in awe of your tattoo work! I hope to earn some competence in the skill in time!

    16. @Valdemagra Thank you for the compliments!

To answer your question, here a pic of the fine brushes I'm using for linework:
The one on left is still a little too thick for me, but my brushes lose hairs over time, so it will be fine in some months. The one on right is nearly not usable anymore.
There is people using thicker brushes with really thin result, but I personnaly prefer this type of brushes. It's a matter of taste.

      • x 1
    17. Yikes! :ablink: It is as tricky as it looks! Thanks for taking the time to send a visual! :abow:

      • x 1
    18. You're welcome!

Here is Gokkan's faceup finished! The goatee won't stay like that. In fact I already styled it in peak.
I was also so disappointed by his dollchateau hands that I bought a paire of Dollpire hands on dollmore. I will mod them to look more old, but it will be better to begin with.

      • x 6
    19. I literally can't believe the amount of detail you are able to add to these dolls, and so neatly! I have a hand tremor so I can't even dream of doing such work

      • x 1
    20. Thank you so much @Invizible_Goose_ !

I have begin a Warai-jō (smiling old man) mask for Gokkan. Here are pictures at different steps:

I still haven't received his new hands and I haven't work on his wig since last year.

      • x 5
    21. Finally my Warai-jō is too huge for Gokkan (that has a quite small head), so I gave it to Matsuyama. I like quite well the result with him:

      • x 9
    22. Poor male oni! I work so much less on them...
Gokkan still has no wig. Nishibi got a body, but it needs some mods so I didn't even painted his faceup. Akebono still owns no body.

All I did is begining a new mask, that will be for Nishibi. It's a Shikami:

    23. I really love that this is clearly personal work with your own creative spin, but you still manage to make everything feel so authentic. The kabuki masks are straight out of Japan. Love the old man mask, and the onna in the other thread is just perfect. You even made cracks in the laquer, it's crazy.

EDIT: I don't know why I said Kabuki at the time - these are Noh masks! Noh is a more ancient form of theater and while there is some overlap, Kabuki masks are a different style.

    24. This journal has been such a fun read! All of these oni clearly are related in some way, but they all look so different from each other, too. I love the heads you picked out for each of them, and the tattoos and faceups are a thing of beauty!
Glad you're still able to find time to make some progress - even slow progress will get all these boys done eventually! I'm rooting for you! :thumbup

      • x 1
    25. Thank you so much for your kind comment! To say the truth, the Onna only has the cracks painted :)

Thank you very much! Yeah progress are slow, because I have too much dolls and projects, and not enough free time :sweat

Reading again the first post, I realized I never shower Ikazuchi in this thread. It's a Miracledoll Chihuo, and Fubuki's first son. Here is he then!
I only painted his faceup (and manicure) and made him a wig, in 2021. Three years later, he still has nothing else. I know I'd like a more steampunk mask for him, and I'd like to sew him some outfits. But I did none of those yet.

Here a pic of how he is currently looking:

(The hat is his personal fashion accessory. I nearly never take picture of him without, and I seldomly put it on an other doll  )

    26. I sewed an outfit for Ikazuchi! Pictures are not utterly beautiful because there is little light today.

    28. Love the colours! He almost has a sort of Taisho Roman style

    29. Thank you very much! I work not enough on these boys, they are neglected compared to my oni girls.

      Thank you! Yes, right!

I suddenly wanted to have more outfits for my male oni. Problem is, they are from various sizes, and I need to buy or sew for each of them, or nearly. So I took a look at what fabrics I had for them. Here is the result of my archeological dig in my fabrics.

It's not a lot, I have enough for 4 outfits. The two fabrics on the left, I don't know for who I will sew it yet. The second couple of fabrics (the cream with birds and the red with traditional shippou pattern) will be for Fubuki, and is probably the next I'll sew. The coral colored linen and the green fabric with fish will be for Ikazuchi, on the same pattern (sleevless haori + yukata) than the last I did. The blue fabrics, I wish to make a haori + a sleeveless yukata out of it. Maybe for Ikazuchi, or his brother Yamaji (Yamaji is only a little shorter than Ikazuchi).

As I'm currently buying a body for Akebono, I need to began looking for fabric for him too. He needs colorfull but not rich fabrics (no gold thread in it),and I would prefer with traditionnal pattern. I don't own such fabrics yet.
I also need to find things for Akebono's father, Nishibi. He needs simple, sober fabrics. I own him since two years and haven't work on him yet. What a shame. XD

    30. This project journal is AMAZING, thank you for sharing it with us! I can't wait to see more of your work, it's gorgeous!

    31. Thank you very much @vinesses for your kind comment! ♥

Some news here. I started Nishibi's and Akebono's faceups. The one for Akebono is really not far yet (so no picture), but here is where Nishibi is:

Nishibi is a Lees BJD Fu devil head. I own him since 2023 and I am only now working on him. His body, a Loongsoul one, is beautiful but to huge for my taste (he is 73cm with a head, and I prefer dolls not taller than 68 cm). I will ask a friend if she can reduce his legs, in order to shorten him a little (70cm would be good, less may be strange and not doable anyway).

Next step on Nishibi's faceup! This faceup won't last long I fear, the sealant is giving me a hard time.

    33. I have always loved your work and your personal progress is still just breathtaking. Its like a box of candy, limited time, and savoring every single bite. I even actually read your blogs instead of skimming. Well worth the time.

    34. Thank yo so much @Fushia Lace ! I'm glad if reading my full-of-flaw english is still enjoyable. ^_^'

I've also painted Akebono's faceup! Here is a picture of him in progress:

And here are they both with faceup completed! Sadly I don't have their eyes yet. I still need to order them.

      Thank you for looking!

    35. I just read trough the journal and your work is amazing! The faces are so detailed and their clothes are beautiful<3 I love how full of character they all are, and how everyone has their own mask!

    36. Thank you so much @ArtsyCreature !

      I finally made Akebono's wig:

    37. All your modded horns look so great in this series. (a-a-and the wigs, a-a-and face-ups, a-a-nd the tats, a-a-nd the garments, a-a-nd the shoes... etc!) Love all your updates! Thank you!

      • x 1
    38. Thank you @Valdemagra ! In fact, only Matsuyma (the DFA head) has modded horns, from all my male oni. I reshaped a little the right one of Akebono (it was broken), but that's all ^_^
Anyway, thank you so much for your warm compliments!

Edit to add a pic of the fabrics I choose for Akebono's first outfit:
