Wearables Making up for lost patterns

Jul 14, 2025

    1. So, today I finally decided it's time to stop grieving for my lost stack of patterns and start to redo all of them and, maybe, better than before.
Long story short: I had a binder with all my handmade patterns for my dolls that I created from scratch but, for some reason, it disappeared. It's more than 2 years I'm actively searching for that binder with no luck and my will to sew for my dolls was obviously 0, since I lost years of work. Will I ever find it again? who knows!
Well, as I said, I was pondering from weeks what to do and I just told myself: redo everything, and start to sew for dolls again!
So, I decided to start with some basic patterns for my girl, Ferris. She's on a 58cm Heydoll body and, this time, I plan to digitalize everything so my work won't get lost again.

I started with the mummy wrap, easy patterning version.
I used cling wrap and tape and put a strip of paper under everything in the back where I had to cut to protect the resin from accidental scratches.

And here the tape monster ready to be cut!

And I found myself with this piece

I had to fiddle to fix it cause it came out too big for some reason and the side seam wasn't centered, but after some work I managed to make it fit properly. So, here my new base pattern, I'm excited.

Here the pattern mockup (it looks loose cause I didn't pin it on the back but it actually fits like a glove)

And that's it for today! I actually did more: I managed to recover a pattern for a corset I did (I still had the sewn corset mockup, so I kinda traced the pattern from the fabric and fixed it till it worked) and a pair of large underpants that I did again recovering the pattern from a pair of pants I did in the past.
I will post those as soon as I have time and share the method too, it if can be useful for someone <3

    2. Heartbreaking situation, but well done for making a start on replacing it.

    3. It was time to go on, they won't reappear magically and I searched everywhere so... they're gone! Better start to do everything again and finish all my projects.

    4. Ugh what a loss, hopefully it will still turn up somewhere strange :(

Thank you for showing how you make patterns with masking tape. I heard about this method and bought tape, but had been hesitant to use it on my dolls because I didn’t know how to cut it without scratching them. Your method with the paper and plastic wrap makes so much more sense. It’s also really helpful to see how you used smaller and shorter pieces of tape to get the form right.

    5. I know it will appear when I don't need it anymore, if it's still somewhere :XD:

I'm happy that's helpful to you! I can recommend to use as few cling wrap as you can, cause it makes bulk and you come out with a pattern that's not 100% accurate (I did this mistake here, so I had to make the finished paper pattern smaller than what I got with the tape cause there was some cling wrap bulk under the it).
Scratching the body is something I fear so much with this method, I don't remember who recommended me to put something on the middle of the back (where you cut) but it's super useful! It's even better if it's thin carboard if you're afraid to scratch the doll.

    6. @Rurimas
Thank you for the advice on the cling wrap. The bulk was something I was wondering about when I saw others using this method, but when it was wrap alone it made a little sense? I much like the wrap and tape combination better.

    7. I tried with cling wrap only but honestly it doesn't work well for me. For sure, next time I'm gonna do this on another doll I'll be more careful to really spread the wrap evenly and then tape.
Another thing I don't like about the cling wrap only is that you have to use permanent markers since it's plastic and that scares me so nope! I prefer using pencils, they don't stain resin and if I dirty the doll they're easy to take off

    8. ugh same! I don’t want permanent markers anywhere near my dolls. Whether from them potentially bleeding through or clumsily dropping an open marker, that’s a nope for me.

    9. I just wanted to say I really feel for you! I lost my decade's worth of patterns for all my dolls in my last long distance move. It definitely took wind out of my sails. I'm happy to see you're ready to start making patterns again! I hope it goes well

    10. Nooo I really feel your pain :...( losing all the patterns you worked are for is a big hit.
But somehow we have to go on, so I just had to accept they won't appear by themselves and if I wanna finish my doll projects the only way was : do them again! And smarter this time, so I'm planning to maybe make a blog or something with all my patterns as an archive.

    11. UPDATE: Searching in my phone gallery I found some old photos of some of the old patterns I did and, with some luck and an altering image software I maybe will be able to recover a couple of patterns :shudder
      Wish me luck!

    13. And I did it! I recovered the priest robe pattern of the dress I did for one of my SD boys.
I have to test it again and modify it a little cause I noticed when I did it there was a dart I didn't like much, but at least I don't need to redo it from scratch.

On another note, today I decided to make some basic clothes for my MSD Doll Leaves Louis, so I did it. This time I didn't create the patterns, I used some from Missy's Imaginings (I'm so glad her website is still up, she has a ton of useful free patterns).
Here the result (not perfect, but at least he's not naked anymore)

I am using this brown fabric cause it's very lighweight cotton and I have a lot. It's perfect to test patterns before using the more expensive fabrics.
