Hello all, in preparation for my upcoming dolls, I need to get some sewing practice, as I have only just recently expelled the demons out of my sewing machine and been able to actually use it. I impulse bought some different colored jersey fabrics when I was supposed to be buying thread a couple weeks ago, so I've decided to get the practicing in by making 3 of my current dolls a sweater in each color! I have 5 colors and 3 dolls, so all put together it will be 15 sweaters (phew!) For day 1 of this practice run I've chalked out sweaters in every color for my two YOSD sized babies, Casper (Ring Doll Momo) and Daisy (Bobobie Isabella). I'll be using this pattern for those The third who will be getting sweaters will be my 1/8 Kamden. The pattern for his sweaters is measured and drawn by me For my 1/6 sweaters, I'll be making 5 Solid colored ones and 5 I will be swapping the sleeves for some variation. I might do the same for some of Kamden's cuffs, since his sleeves are not swappable in his pattern. Feel free to follow along and give me advice along the way! I'm not new to sewing, but I am relatively new to machine sewing. Here's Progress Pic number 1, also showing all the colors I have My plan for tomorrow is to cut and sew at least one sweater, ideally two!
That's a lot of sweaters! You'll be an absolute pro by the end. The colours you've chosen look lovely, your dolls will have plenty of fun options. The only advice I have for machine sewing knits is the same as for most machine sewing: Test out the seams and settings before comitting. I'd say do it before cutting, in case it turns out you need a certain width of the seam allowance for the machine to behave. Most regular sewing machines can handle stretchy fabrics just fine, but it can take a bit of trial and error to get it right. Better get that over with on test pieces so that the actual sweaters goes smoothly and quickly. Best of luck with your project!
My only advice for sewing knit on a machine is if it's thin - your's looks quite lightweight in the picture - you might have trouble with the machine stretching it as it sews and/or eating it. I've experienced both, lol! You can put a stabilizing material underneath the fabric to help. I've used a single sheet of tissue paper. You just tear it off once you've finished sewing. It's not a perfect system, but it does work. There are other ways to stabilize your fabric - that's just the one I've tried. Have fun! Your dolls are going to love their new sweaters!
Thanks for your advice! I've finaly figured out what setting works the best for stretchy fabric on my machine so I have a bit of practice with it in the noggin THanks also for ur luck wishes, I am hopeful it will go relatively painlessly but that might be foolhardy! My machine does have a tendency to eat knits if the pieces are small, so tissue paper always helps. It's not the thinnest that I've ever worked with, so I think it will be okay, but if it starts getting hungry I'll be relying on ol tissue paper
Progress! Spun a wheel to decide what color to start with and got Mint, so I cut out all the mint 1/6 pieces, safely stored away the pieces for the second sweater and got to sewing! Spoiler: Progress Pictures Attached the shoulders and sleeves, this was relatively painless allthough I did require a bit of help from the tissue paper to get my machine to stop chewing on the shoulder I attached the collar and was so happy with how neat it looked, this is the first time I've managed to do a sweater collar that looked this nice, so much so that I wasnt even mad that I accidentally sewed it with the "N" I used to make sure I knew this was the neckline piece lol Unfortunately, my tup stitch got knocked off course because of my clumsiness, so the top stitching kinda ruined it T_T but I know how to prevent this next time I ended up having to hand sew the waistline, I tried to get it under my machine but I got paranoid that it was slipping, but I think it turned out pretty well! The back is crooked because I got too impatient when sewing it together in the back, but thats not going to be visible most of the time First Sweater is complete! It isn't perfect, but its definitely the best looking sweater I've ever made anyway! It looks really nice on Casper, goes well with his hair!
The neckline progress picture looks so good! This is such a good way to really learn the more annoying or harder parts of sewing.
Ah! So you have already discovered the helpfulness of tissue paper! Awesome. Your sweaters look adorable!
Progress again! It comes late today by my standards, but I have a sick guinea pig and spent the majority of the day dealing with that (he's doing alright for now, no worries!) This second sweater went a little better, although once again the top stitching did me dirty. I made the exact same mistake as on the first one, but I managed to fix it because it irked me so much. I also somehow managed gto sew the sleeve top stitches too far down, and sew the waistband on the wrong way out (only shows on the back, but still lol) overall though it looks good I think, although Daisy doesn't really like it. At this rate, Casper is gonna get 10 Sweaters and then Daisy is going to complain I never make her anything
Me too! IRL they arent the complete same, but they compliment instead of clash which is really nice Thank you! Mint is my favorite color so I really like it as well! He says thank you kindly I'm already learning a lot! By the final sweater, I'm gonna be a sweater pro I'm sure Tissue paper is a real savior honestly! Thank you so much for your kind words
Day 3 Progress! First tiny one: It turned out very big I think what happened is that I thought I hadnt drawn a seam allowance into my pattern, but I definitely did because it's far too big haha. But that's okay! It looks pretty cute. I think on his future ones I will shrink them a little, especially at the sleeve. I will also tighten the cuffs. Kamden doesn't really like pink that much, so this sweater might end up being owned by a future doll, but he thinks it's comfy. Also, check out his tamagochi! He's very proud of it.
You are keeping up a good pace with these. Your dolls are lucky to get such a boost to their warderobes!
Day 4 Progress! Dark Blue, and it's Casper's turn again! Im really struggling to get that top stitching right, but it improves every time so I wont be too upset about that. I love this color on him, it's super good Now remaining before the colors start doubling up is a grass green. I'm excited to start swapping sleeves and cuffs after that!
Day 5 Progress! I had two days of no progress. I know that I don't need to explain myself but this is like a crafting diary so I'll put the info under a spoiler for those who maybe saw my previous mentions of my sick piggie and are curious. Spoiler: CW: Pet Death Much of Monday was spent making a difficult decision regarding my Guinea Pig Hades. He has had a bad tooth for a little under a year, that has been filed every month to keep it from overgrowing. I had always known that this was a temporary fix to a problem that would eventually catch up to him, and unfortunately that was this week. I considered trying to take him to another vet 3 hours away, but considering his age and current state (unable to eat on his own, and needing painkillers) it felt cruel to stress him out like that, taking him away from his herd and going on a long car ride, with no guarantee that there was anything they could do over there anyway. I decided the most humane thing to do was to let him go, and I did yesterday. My little guinea pig herd means a lot to me, and I was really attached to Hades. Losing him has been very hard for me, and I didn't feel like doing much of anything yesterday. I just had to spend my remaining energy on cleaning the cage for my remaining two girls to help their mourning process as well. But, as always, the cure for sadness for me has always been to occupy myself, so I decided to jump back into my project As usual, teh top stitching is what gets me, I swear I'm actually trying to be accurate and go slow, I'm not making that up But in the end, these little mistakes arent really visible unless you really look for them. Decided to try and attach the waistband a little differently, and sewed it on before I sewed the sweater up at the back. This worked fine and made it easier to attach for me, so yay Now I have one sweater in all of the five colors that I bought Now to start doing some mixing and matching color wise, for funsies. Tomorrow is my birthday, and I'm going for a daytrip so unless I feel like doing something when I get home, there probably wont be an update until the 17th! Although one of my dolls Im waiting for is very close to arriving, and if she does that might throw everything off haha
Day 9 Update (I think, idk how to count lol) My prediction came trough, my new doll came in and it knocked me off track a bit haha But, on the 15th I actually made a second sweater later at night, and I just now had the time and brainpower to post it. Made it a little smaller than the first one, and swapped the details for a more exciting look! Tomorrow is my mom's birthday, so I don't know if I will be able to make the next sweater then, but we will see if I have the energy If I do, next will be a sleeve swapped sweater for Casper. Thanks to everyone staying tuned
Day.... I lost count! lol Was supposed to be a duo-color, but because the first tiny sweater was the pink one, I still had the pieces for a solid pink. So I did that first instead. It turned out really nice, I tihink. Top stitching still an issue but better than ever haha Going trough some difficult times in my personal life. And my new dolly is also taking a lot of my attention. But I am determined to finish!
