Making soft/squishy bodyparts.

Dec 27, 2005

    1. I started thinking, on this topic - http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38580

No matter what you think on how it looks, I think the concept of designing soft bodyparts, such as squishable boobs, to be facinating. Aparently it's a hard plastic core with soft material over top, and with joints in each breast to make them poseable.

I started thinking, how would others go about making soft, squishable, but durable bodies, the pros and cons of materials other than resin and hard clay. I think silicon, like Masterpiece eyes, would make a great torso if you wanted to be able to have more realistic breasts, pull them up with a bra or corset and make clevage, corset the waist down some, etc., but I have no clue on how easy it would be to work with, how durable it is, and so on.

You could also do the same to make poseable hands without joints, make a wire base and then cover it with something soft, like the life size Chii.

I know I was disapointed with the 'squishable' breasts I've encountered with Obitsu and DD. They were lovely, but squished like plastic, not like Soom or Masterpiece eyes.

So I go here for more expert opinions, faced with the challenge of making a soft bodypart, how would you go about doing it?

    2. Obistu and DD boobs seem so odd when squished because they are hollow. I've considered filling the bust on one of my 1/6th Obitsu Large Soft Bust with silicone to see how they respond to squishing when filled.

I figure making soft body parts is very similar to making the hard ones: Sculpt in clay, make a mold, cast in whichever material you wish to use. I think a soft vinyl would probably hold up better than silicone, though.

It would take some trial and error.

    3. I think that the breasts on that particular mod are foam latex which has been cast in a mold.

I've seen "Pinup Dolls" which have soft squishy bodies with internal armatures, and Gentaro Araki, the sculptor for Unoa, makes soft poseable dolls (I think they're silicone) . . . the main problem is that this kind of material isn't easily cleaned or customized, so you'd run into the problem of it getting grimy with handling, I'd think.

Here are some threads about the 'soft' dolls:

It seems like the Pinup Dolls site may be down -- they're very pretty Asian-featured girls, but the hands aren't very detailed, I can't really remember whether or not I liked the bodies, tbh. I'll try to scrounge up some photos of them :)

    4. there is a forum at www.dollfan.com which has several people who cast dolls (mostly babies) out of silicone.. if you can put up with the saccharine, and don't mind saying you love dolls that are ugly (you aren't allowed to offend anyone by being honest) then you may be able to ask questions and get answers.. I have a couple of silicone dolls and they feel FABULOUS!

    5. smooth-on.com makes a plastic called "Dragon Skin" which is commonly used for making movie quality rubbery things. It's very tough apparently. *shrugs* I have no idea if it would work for anything, but there it is. :3

    6. I had that reaction to Tristan's body and especially his butt. I took him apart, and put some scraps of polar fleece in them. I got enough in his torso that he only gives a little, and less in this butt, so it feels like a real butt. (Mind you that's about when his legs started falling off...) Do you think that would work if you didn't want to try the silicone?

    7. I'm not concerned with the silicone, since it would be east to remove again (silicone glue peels right off) I'm not sure how I would get the fleece to stay in place. And what kind of doll has a squishy BUTT? I've never seen it.
