Aesthetics Making Scrap from scratch

Hey, all! This is my journal to document making my "fursona". To preface: I don't actually have a fursona. If I did, however, it would be a crow or something. But, a while back I found a website that had a bunch of AI generated fursonas and came upon this one that was so endearingly ridiculous I couldn't help but zone in on it.



I named this purple/green abomination "Scrap", and immediately drew them for my own amusement.



A short time passed and on instagram I came upon @shecow and her wonderful cat sculpts. She had a few "failures" for sale (I wouldn't exactly call them failures, but I love a challenge) and she had a few for sale, and I bought one faceplate! G1, to be exact.



From this moment I knew this would be the catalyst for Scrap. I had recently bought my first 3D printer second-hand (a Flashforge Finder) and would flesh this character out as my first ever foray into 3D modeling and printing! It was intimidating, confusing, and frustrating at first, but soon became rewarding. My first project was to create a plate for the back part of the head. Using a head model off of the internet, I haphazardly combined and booleaned something that could vaguely fit (crossing my fingers, of course). And after a bit of trial and error, I printed something close enough, and decidedly filled the rest with apoxie sculpt as shown here:



Fits pretty good!



It doesn't look that bad... does it? Anyway, now begins finding a body to make into Scrap's perfect final form. I hope you'll find this journey entertaining! Stay tuned for updates as I create this impromptu character from head to toe

The body parts have been printed! I kitbashed/modded a BJD body I bought off cgtrader with a hare BJD downloaded off thingiverse. I modded the doll to be male, made the hips and booty pop, and booleaned the thighs and back legs of the hare to make digitigrade legs.


I tried to give the chest an acetone vapor bath to smooth out the printing layers and A. it didn't really work well with the PLA and B. the acetone straight up evaporated whatever red paint was on the glass tealight holder I was using to hold the chest part suspended. The PLA wicked it up like a sponge


Oh well, it's going to be spray painted, anyway. Kind of a shame because it looks so darned neat!


So now I have a bag of printed body parts waiting to be sanded down and spiffied up with some apoxie sculpt. Next update I'll post some pics of the raw prints versus the hand-sculpted bits!

Smudge in the background was quality control as I started to fill in with apoxie.




I mostly filled in gaps from where I melded two parts together, but over time built up detail in a few areas.


It's a little slow-going, but worth it. I haven't been feeling all that hot over the past few days, so that's A-okay by me. I intend to add fur detail from the knees down, and smooth everything else out nicely in preparation for painting!

 

Hopefully these images will show up, because I have begun to sculpt the fur details!



Keeping the fur towards the knees so Scrap can still wear shorts, yet show off their fuzzy legs :p
Once this apoxie dries I will be sanding it down and seeing if I need to add any small detail to balance everything out, but I'm pretty happy with these! Now onto the rest of the legs...

I laid the body out to see how it all looks together.

I need to reprint the right forearm as it warped while it was printing. Thank goodness it wasn't one of the parts I sculpted! I also want to shorten the torso. I love weird proportions but it's a wee bit too long... This will at least allow me access inside the torso to place a magnet for the tail!
