Making new BJD sculpts

Jun 4, 2021

    1. Hello Everyone! I am working on a couple of sculpts and I am looking for some critique and info on how to make them look better. The image in the background of each are the two commissioned reference pictures used to sculpt the heads. Thank you soo much for reading this!

    2. Cute reference designs! I think your sculpting is looking good so far. The detail is low, but for anime faces that seems to be standard (I would look at some Volks and other anime-style companies for reference).

One thing I notice is that in the second head the forehead/upper head is shorter than the reference photo indicates. Some volume would be accounted for with a wig, but you don't want the forehead to be too low/short. So maybe try raising it a little and giving more volume to the back of the head as well (when seen in profile view).

For the first head, the forehead slopes back rather steeply. That might be the look you are going for, but usually human heads have more of a brow ridge, even if it is a subtle one. You look look at some profiles of real people as well as other doll sculpts.

Good luck! I admire your efforts - I would love to sculpt some heads, but I'm too intimidated the start!

    3. Thanks soo much! This is my first sculpt and I have been working super hard to make it perfect.Sculpting these has been a blast but it is a lot of work and time especially since i am learning blender as I go. Good idea on the volks dolls I see what you meant by the forehead shape being off especially around the eyes. Thank you soo much for your time!

    4. You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help! I'm not a sculptor (yet haha) but I'm an artist and I know how it feels to need a fresh eye! I hope you'll continue to have fun learning as you work on these heads!
