I've posted about this project on Instagram, but not here yet, so here we go! I've been working on sculpting Garrus Vakarian from the Mass Effect video game series (to go with Shepard, who I have a journal about here), and I finally did a test print of him last night! I did the sculpt in Sculptris, then used 3D Builder to hollow out the head, make the eyewells, neckhold, and mandible joints. I'm happy to say that the joints are actually functional, and his crest snaps onto the rest of his head well enough that I didn't need to glue in any magnets. I'm sure the roughness of the material is partially why this is true, but hey, at least they fit! Here are some sculpting pictures from Sculptris. The criss-cross lines are NOT detail, but rather printing supports that didn't come off. Spoiler: Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations. 2020-05-03_11-37-41 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 2020-05-03_11-37-31 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 2020-05-03_11-37-21 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 2020-05-03_11-36-29 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr There was a printing error on one of the eyes. I am IN LOVE The model looks deadly printed out!!! What eyes does he wear? Are you planning to print him in SLA/sand him and paint him? And finally, can you move his "head fins" like in the game? Excited to see how it goes - the head looks incredible!
Edit: I don't know why some of the pictures aren't loading. They are there if you click on them, though. Thank you! Thank you! I made the eyes for him last summer out of resin. I think they are 10mm. I've started printing him in the highest resolution my printer can handle, and then I'll prime, sand, and paint him. I've got the mandibles printed already, and the crest/headcap is printed but unfortunately had an error pretty early into the print. I'm going to try to fix it with apoxie, and if I can't then I'll reprint the piece and see if I can figure out what went wrong. I am considering a resin printer, but that'll be a few months down the line, most likely. And yes, his mandibles move! They are just strung with a cheap hair tie right now, but they hold well enough for him to "smile." IMG_20200506_215943 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr IMG_20200506_220025 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr Same with the crest/headcap. Low res on the right, with partially-removed supports, and high res on the left, with supports still attached on the bottom. IMG_20200506_220044 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr Here are the printing errors on his crest. The middle support didn't form properly at all. I came back to the print a few hours in, and there was just this string-like pile of filament where the support and the beginnings of the middle spike should have been. I removed that mid-print in hopes the rest of the spike would print correctly. The support on the right side looks like it fell over partway through, because the tip of the spike is at least there. I may be able to sand and repair that without too much trouble. IMG_20200506_220058 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr IMG_20200506_220104 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr
The head is done! I didn't notice that one of his eyes is drooping a bit until I'd completed the face-up, but I can fix that later if it keeps bothering me. I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, and I've started planning the body. Here are progress pictures of the head. Spoiler: Primed and sanded! 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200511224342325_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200511224345463_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr I love the stone texture at this stage. I'm going to have to take advantage of this somehow with a different print. Some printing lines are still visible, but they actually feel pretty flat. 00000PORTRAIT_00000_BURST20200511224349219 by AndreaJEP, on Flickr Spoiler: Starting the Face-up 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200515001843820_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200515001839972_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr Spoiler: Calibrations Complete! :D 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200516171732919_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200516171736517_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200516171840813_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200516171834800_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr 00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200516171828330_COVER by AndreaJEP, on Flickr
Wow that sculpt is so accurate! Did you use an in-game model or is that all free-handed from reference? Either way, you've got some really impressive skills.
Wow, this looks amazing! I love Garrus so much. Are you thinking of making any other Mass Effect characters?
This is fantastic and the fact that the mandibles are jointed is really impressive. Are you planning to do his full suit as well, or is he going to end up in a borrowed N7 hoodie?
