Making Fay (8-19 still not done- comparison pics p.10)

Oct 9, 2006

1. So, I finally decided to post some pics of my little BJD in progress, Fay. She'll be about 25 cm tall, but she's gonna be wearing 24 mm eyes, and she fits an SD13 wig cap. In other words: big head:sweat

My "studio":

What I have so far (the dark bits in the hands are the pieces of wire for the fingers getting to the surface):

After sculpting a leg I realized I made her feet kinda huge, so I put in smaller beads and I'm now working on making them tinier:

When she's done, she's gonna look like this:

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/31236153/?qo=7&q=by:puffheadz&qh=sort:time+-in:scraps

If I can ever make that wig, that is:ablah: .

Since these pictures I've put in a new, better drilled bead for the hip joint, put more "muscle" onto the thigh, I've been working on the feet more and I've moved one hip socket further to the back (still need to do the other one).

I'm hoping to be done sculpting by next weekend, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna make that, with the load of job hours I have this week. I should hurry though, I'm not sure how long I can keep the resin I bought before it becomes useless.

Hope you like what I have so far:)

2. Oh my god, she's going to be ADORABLE! I can't wait to see more!

3. Thanks, Illves:)

I've got her arms and legs done so far, and I'm now working on her head. I think I'll need to flesh out her torso and arms some more to (visually) counterbalance that huge head :sweat I hope she won't become top heavy... I'll post new pics soon.

4. theres one problem i see so far... are you going to be able to cast it in resin and sell me one? :D its so cute-the concept art is adorable!

5. Your doll is looking so cute! It looks like you're well set-up too!

6. Chuuie: Well, I am going to cast her (probably two casts so I have parts for a second doll I want to make), but I'm nowhere near a professional caster and the 3 litres of resin and 5 kgs of silicon I bought pretty much depleted my bank account :( So I don't think I'll be able to make copies to sell anytime soon (not to mention I'm not even sure I WANT to sell copies).

Glad you all like Fay, though:)

7. Well, if you do decide to make casts of her, I'll definately have to get one! We share the same name! You left the 'e' off the end and everything. ^^

8. Update!

Got her almost complete now. I still need to make the arms, neck and upper torso thicker, make that one foot smaller and work out some details, and doctor the head some more (and of course hollow it out and fit in the eyes).

Her head is finally starting to look the way I want it to. My dad and brother both said she looks like an alien right now :(

9. OK, I replied to my thread, the post shows, but the thread won't get bumped and it still says Jade_Rust is the last poster O.O What gives?

10. No clue. But she's super cute!

I love her profile

11. Wow she really is coming along. Can't wait to see the final result and really good luck on that wig!!!

12. awwww so cute! she's coming along great i don't think she looks like an alien...boys are stupid! XP

13. oooh are you gonna be casting this in resin? please tell me you are! :D

14. yay ^3^ she looks so cute XD
waiting for more photos ^^!

15. New pics!

She put on a few er, grammes since last time:) And I've been working on her face more. Even though she's not wearing eyes yet, when I took this pic she looked like she just awoke after surgery or something, looking at me like: "[Mommy,] Can we go home now?" Or more to the point, she looked like my doggie does when I clean out her ears (the same "can I go now?" look), which is EXACTLY what I was going for, that she looks like my doggie I mean.

And a pic of the back of her legs and inside of her elbows, where the joints have to go in. I refined the shape of the "sockets" a bit. Maybe it helps some people to see how I did it:)

Hopefully I'll have her head hollowed out by tonight.

16. i think she will be just awesome girl ^_^

17. Fay can see:) ! I'm just about finished with the head, inside and out. I can't believe the amount of times I had to redo her mouth after accidentally sticking a big fat thumb impression on it from holding on tight to work on the inside of the head :vein

Now all she needs is ears and her left foot to be finished and I can bake her:)

18. Wow. That is cute!

Only suggestion is that the center of her forehead may be a little bit proteusive.

19. Oh good goddess! She's just too cute for words :D

20. *squeals*

Oh! I just want to hug her!

21. Awww shes looking soo cute! *-*

22. :ablink: COULD she be any cuter?? !!! ??? :thumbup

I can't believe what a difference eyes make... and that adorable mouth!

Where do you people find such talent?? :D

23. Glad you all like her:)

armeleia: I made her forehead look like that on purpose. Maybe I'll sand it off a bit after I bake her.

Jade_Rust: You and me both ;)

Baakay: Would you believe I hardly ever sculpt anything? I used to make things with clay in elementary school, but this is the second thing I've made since I was ten I believe. Five years ago I made a tiny simplified figurine out of Fimo (blah), and now this. I guess it helps that I'm good at drawing:) Thanks for the compliments!

Hopefully I'll have her ears and foot done tonight. Just sucks that I won't have any time to work on her this weekend :vein

24. Wauw that looks good! Iff I may ask are you dutch or belgium?????

Ik zie bladerdeeg staan op 1 van de dozen ^^!!

25. Bliss: Hollander hier:)

26. Huhuhu It was the box that betrayed uyour secret location!!!!! hehehehe ^_^!
But really het ziet er uit als een scheetie!

27. She is sooo adorable and looks just like the cartoon! WOW! I can not wait to see her finished.

28. yay! i think she looks cute like the preetiest flower ^_____^!!!!!!!

29. She is so cute! I just want to hug her repeatedly. :aheartbea

30. ::sob:: send her to get cast by professionals! then gimme one >.< im so green of you! i dont think ive ever seen such a cute doll!

31. As good as done and ready for baking!

And she has ears:) :

Sorry, have to do this. I so love her cute little feet :D

Next update she'll hopefully be baked, strung and sanded and ready for molding:)

32. that is looking beautiful. Great job for someone who hardly scuplt anything prior to this. :o

33. awww! she's adorable! :D

34. Why is she so cute? I come to love her more and more because of it!

35. kawai !!!
:D :D :D :aheartbea :aheartbea

36. Oh man, what a super cutiepieface. I love her big eyes and pert little mouth. She's going to be so adorable when you're through with her! Not that she isn't adorable now... But you know what I mean. ;)

37. Oh that is so cool. I love the way her ears came out!!! wow.

*ponders the big chunk-o-supersculpey upstairs....*

38. Thank you all:)

I baked her last night and to my great relief everything went perfectly: no blackening, no cracking, no melting core tape, nothing (except i need to sand down the inside of her head because I can't get her eyes into their sockets anymore>_< ) . Wrapping the tinfoil cores with adhesive tape worked like a charm, I got the cores out in ten seconds, literally, without needing forceps or anything. My dad was kind enough to make Luts style wrist and ankle joints for Fay today:)

I accidentally inhaled freshly-baked-supersculpey fumes and it made me ever so slightly short of breath for over an hour:|. I don't care what the guy at the resin store said, I'm gonna get me a mask before starting the molding and casting process. But first I have loads of sanding to do :sigh

I bought some clothes for Fay yesterday and when the guy at the toy store asked if it was a present and I said no, he tightened slightly and looked VERY disapproving>_< I thought at least toystore owners would be accepting of toy loving adults, but I guess not. But that's a story for another thread.

39. So after loads and loads of sanding (all by hand, no dremel!) and working on the joints I hit a small snag. I realized the beads I used for the elbow and ankle joint were too small, so that a big gaping hole was produced when bending the arm/leg. So I decided to enlarge the beads with sculpey, which worked good for the legs. At first it also worked for the arms, but all the beads came loose again and when I glued them back on, the added-on and blowdried sculpey crumbled>_<

^Pic from a few days ago. I've sanded out both thighs and fastened the beads again since then.

Also, when I was sanding down the sides of Fay's head some more to make her head and headcap align better, suddenly first her right and then her left ear came off:...( I glued them back on, but the fracture is still quite visible on the right ear. I hope I'll be able to fix that with spray putty.

Argh. I want her done (that means cast) by Christmas, but there's no way I'm gonna make that. And to think that when I started I thought I'd need 2 weeks tops:sweat That was 3 months ago.

40. Oh My!! Shes So Cute!!
I Love Her Feet!!
Is Gorgeous!
Well Done!
You Are Amazing Doing This!

41. aaaahh look at those widdle ears >.< *dies from excess of cute*

42. i still think she is coming along so cute! and if you decide to cast her and sell her to others ::pray:: i'd be happy to pay you in advance to cover casting mats :) her face is just too much for me-the cuteness is painful! i wish i was as talented as you! and im glad you havent given up on her-it had seemed like you puttered out for a bit-im glad youre keeping up! :D

43. sculpey is hard to work with in that if something isnt perfectly attached it will often break off or come loose. sculpey also doesnt really stick to wood that I know of. It doesnt quite stick to anything but itself, really >.>;
I'd be kinda worried about that bit when it came to casting. I guess your best bet is to spray putty everything and hope it comes out smooth.
For the body you may wanna use something thicker, like Gesso? It tends to smooth out easier and covers in a heavier layer, thus it is easier to fill dents and scrapes with it.

HOWEVER

Please spray putty the head. When I Gesso'd the face of my last doll a long time ago, it killed all the detail, including her poor lips which came out looking like a misshapen lump of gesso on her face.. That was why I stopped on my doll last time.

44. *cheers ShuriTigerH* We're all rootin' for you to complete your doll project! :)

45. Putty and gesso are your friend. Once you have the lumps and bumps sanded (not worrying about texture so much) A full coat all over the doll in Gesso then once that is sanded to near perfection putty spray will cover all cracks and ills!

I hope you get her done soon, I remember thinking it wouldn't much more than a month to finish a doll, and that was on the 3rd of September! Still looks like you're practically there. figure 2 or 3 days for molds, and a couple for casting, you might make that deadline yet!

46. Many thanks for the tips, everyone!

Chuuie: no way I'm giving up! Never:)

Shizen: yay:)

Lolipop: Yeah, in theory I could have her done by the end of next week, but I currently have long shifts at work plus a uni thesis to work on, so I'll be lucky if I can work on Fay for more than one day (Saturday) a week. But I will work on her:)

Aishiteru: thank you^_^

47. lol shuri, im cheering you on 100%-im hoping to get my hands on one of your Fays (since im gonna harass you until you break down and cast it at least twice) >.< i can give you a pet guinea pig to trade? :D lolololol ::guinea pig in lap cries pitiously:: :P

48. She's so awesome! Can't wait to see her all done! :whee:

49. Fay still needs to be sanded smooth, but I couldn't resist stringing her. Good thing I did too, now I know I need to make the neck hole deeper and string her a LOT tighter when I do it for real. I think her arms are just a tad too tight (she can't keep them straight as you can see from the pics) and her legs are, well, floppy. She can only sit right now, she collapses when standing and her head wobbles>_< But I love her sososo much :aheartbea
When she first popped into my mind I promised that one day soon I'd hold her in my arms for real. And tonight I did:)

I hope her elastic isn't too thin. I got elastic of 1mm thick. Anyone know how thick Yo-SD elastic is?

50. oh wow look at her alll strung and gorgious ^^

51. wow, she has come along !
how did you find doing the ears ? i'm having a bit of trouble with the shape of mine.
you must have felt great when she was strung for the first time :)

52. she looks so lovely and sweet sitting on the sculpey boxes >.<

53. She is sooo cute!! :)

54. Maggot: making her ears wasn't that hard, getting them to stay on was ^^;

Everyone: so glad you like her:) After posting in here last night I tried to get Fay to stand again, and it actually worked:) I only had my cellphone with me so I took some pics with that (please excuse the crap quality, cellphone+dark outside+only lamp light to work with=lousy pic). I was seriously expecting her to collapse and fall flat on her face the moment I took this pic, but she didn't.

55. oh my god!! look at this tiny beauty!! she's so lovely!!!

56. You have made a great job: she is sooooo cute!
I'll follow your job

57. She is so cute! I just love her very large head!

58. Oh wow! She's fantastic! Great job!

59. Love. just.... love that girl. wow.

Now then. Let us all begin to pray to whatever entity we prefer that the casting process goes well!! This little sweetheart HAS to be done!! :)
