Making copies of your master sculpt and artist casting

Nov 13, 2015

    1. So I know it's risky to send your master sculpt off to be cast, so I was wondering what is the preferred method for making copies of your sculpt to be sent off? I know with 3D printing now that it's become possible to have a doll scanned and printed, and then it seems like a lot of you are making artists casts and getting them to a finish level to be sent off? If anyone has gone the 3D scanning/printing route do you have any company suggestions for that?

The other question I wanted to ask, is if I am just doing this for hobby fun times and I only want to have a couple copies of my doll, is it possible to get a decent enough cast at home making my own molds and such? Or do you really need to have professional tools?

    2. I think it depends. I'm not sure sending a doll off to cast is worth it if you don't plan to sell it, but if you promote it it might not be hard to get people interested on it and could save you money. However if you don't plan to do that, casting yourself works just fine. It all depends of what you want.

      Rough comparison:
      Casting yourself:
Pros: fun, cheaper (if you're lucky), more freedom, you don't have to worry about mailing things back and forth
Cons: you need to learn and practice, need for safety measures (casting releases fumes), kind of a mess, results might not be as good as what you'd get from a professional company
      Casting companies
Pros: good results, easy to get copies with consistent quality, way less work
Cons: can be quite expensive, mailing your master is risky, you need to plan the master sculpt around the company's methods

    3. Thank you for your input! My intention to is definitely do an artist cast because even if I eventually wanted something professionally cast I would still need to have a copy of my master to send. Also I see the value in even having some junk casts to work with for sculpting purposes. I still have a lot of work to do on my doll yet, but I'm always thinking ahead of myself, lol.

    4. Making junk casts with silicone straight away can be really expensive so make sure to practice with small pieces first! And don't worry, it's good to think ahead because a lot of the time you need to take the casting methods into account while you plan the master.
