If you are in the US, you might find this helpful: The USPS offers a box that is a good size for shipping bjds FOR FREE. You will need 3 of these boxes which you can order here: http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/sto...01&categoryId=13354&productId=11637&langId=-1 If you don't want to order, ask your local PO if they carry the #7 Priority Mail box. The 2 POs I go to don't carry this particular box size so I have to order from the site. Basically, I took 3 boxes and lined them up within each other like this: I, then, taped up the box this way: (I don't like paying for shipping materials so yes, I even ordered the FREE priority mail tape!) I have pictured here is my Volks SD13 girl box still within the box it was shipped to me from Doll & Hobby 3 years ago! This shows how much extra room will be within the box but I think you can stuff it with used bubblewrap or whatever to keep the box from moving around within. Then you can take to the PO and use one of their free labels to mail to your buyer! Nifty? :-) Edit: Just a note on shipping a Volks Dollfie Dream...I used the smaller boxes and shipping within the US via Priority Mail cost under $7.
awesome! didn't know you could do that! I will keep that in mind, in case I ever decide to sell a doll (if I ever get above 2! XD)
Do you still have to send it Priority (seeing as you're using the Priority box )? and, About how much would it be to ship an SD using that method? Thank you!
If you use Priority mail boxes, you HAVE TO use priority mail. The PO won't let you ship in another method using those particular boxes. I don't know how much an SD would be as I've never shipped one. Maybe someone who tries this method of boxing can post an amount in this thread. I've looked on the USPS.com website and unfortunately, they don't have the same size boxes for Express mail. My suggestion if you go Priority Mail route is to get insurance and signature confirmation. http://www.usps.com/send/waystosendmail/extraservices/signatureconfirmationservice.htm
LMAO, that's how I ship furniture. XD I combine two of those boxes. My post master doesn't mind at all, he says he finds it clever. If you found out that you have to ship another method, you can wrap it up in brown paper. They look down on that, but they understand it happens.
Very true, you can trick them with the brown paper! And if you're low on brown paper, cut up some grocery bags if you keep them.
The post office is allowed - and DOES - if they thing you are using their boxes and not paying for Priority - check the box - even under the brown paper. I have seen this happen. And IF they catch you - not only do you get to pay the postage that you've already paid - but the make you pay for it via Priority as well! Personally, I don't think that cheating pays. I've seen people get caught at the post office! If you are going to use their boxes - for free as you say - then the RIGHT thing to do is to pay the appropriate postage. Go ahead and flame away - but I think that doing the right thing is still the best! Getting caught or not. Robyn
Hmm, I think if you're going to be shipping something that large and obviously, something of value such as a doll, I can't see why they would object to you using the brown paper over priority mail boxes if you're paying for Express mail. At least, this is how I understood the question when it was asked.
If you mail UPS (sometime it is cheaper) you can use these boxes. UPS doesn't care whose boxes you use. I always do a comparison between UPS and USPS for a large box.
Thank you for answering my questions! It is a clever method that I've thought about doing, but just never did. :3
IF the post office wouldn't object to the boxes being used when you're shipping via Express mail, my suggestion would be to forgo the brown paper and just turn the boxes inside out. You'd have to slit one side, and then tape it back together, but you wouldn't have the possible problem of the paper getting torn off.
I just got back from the PO so here are a few things I found out after discussing with both the manager and 2 of the counter service people: You can use the Priority Mail boxes for EMS IF you cover them with brown paper. They said that there is no way they will know if you use them unless all you are doing is covering just the part that says "Priority Mail". The manager (who I know personally) said that they don't have a problem with one using the boxes for that as we are paying an even more expensive fee. But, "downtown" or the main sorting station where mail goes before it's flown out of your city, they might think differently. Still, the manager had said that if the box is completely covered in brown shipping paper, they won't know what boxes you are using. They would rather you use their boxes and ship at the PO than go to UPS. If you invert the Priority Mail boxes to use for EMS or anything other than Priority Mail, you'll find that the inside of their boxes are stamped with "Priority Mail". The only way you can use is if you invert the boxes and cover with brown shipping paper. I know the manager and all the counter people at my PO on a first name basis (as they know me by my name) and they know my shipping habits. If I'm doing something wrong, they would tell me. But if they are telling me that I can use these boxes to ship EMS, by god, I'll do it if I have to. They said they aren't going to rip open the paper to find out what boxes you are using as they aren't allowed to do that.
My apology, I didn't realize the boxes had been changed so they couldn't be used wrong side out. I was just thinking that might be a way around the use of brown paper which they don't seem to like at the post office. Personally, I prefer not to wrap a box, for fear of the address label being torn off. But that's just me, I'm paranoid.
No, you can use the brown paper. I don't think the address label would get torn. If you cover the entire part except for the scanbar part for the tracking number, it won't come off.
*nods* That's just my personal paranoia/bias. I prefer not to wrap if I can help it. But being able to use the priority boxes with brown paper wrapping for EMS is an excellent resource!
Hmm, if the doll I'm selling has its shipper, I ship it in that... No sense in keeping that pristine... but the priority box stacking is a great idea if your doll only has its comparatively flimsy inner box. Raven
Exactly. If I don't have the shipping carton that the doll came in from Korea, or Japan, and can't find a box large enough, then stacking the priority boxes is an excellent idea. I would never ship a doll just in the pretty 'presentation' box.
Yeah, it's not sturdy enough to survive the rough treatment it would get via EMS. I saved the outer box as it's very snug and it helps keep sd13 Nana's box pristine. Call me crazy but I just like keeping it all nice. My msd box is so battered as the original owner wasn't as careful with the box.
Oh darn! No wonder I couldn't find it anywhere on the site. =/ I really needed tape and I don't want to buy the tape from where I work, It cost 5 bucks!
You can try sweet-talking the counter people at the PO. They have loads of it and might give you a roll.
Yeah, just ask the post office to reinforce it. They'll NEVER say no, as long as the top and bottom of the boxes are tapes as normal. I WOULD put a little clear tape on the corners, then just ask them to reinforce the entire thing with -theirs-. At least, my post office does this for me, they're SO nice. T_T
the link at the top of the post does not seem to want to work for me I found this on is it the same because I am in the process of selling of of my angels http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/sto...01&categoryId=13354&productId=11637&langId=-1
A good cheap source of stuffing for filling in the box gap is plastic bags from the grocery store. :3 I keep all of them(usually for kitty litter bags XD) that I get and they work very well to stuff boxes with! I wrap the inner doll and box in bubblewrap, but outside is usually plastic bags. X3
I tried to do this at my Post Office, they flat out said no. When I mentioned that other post offices apparently allow it because I'd seen it online...she laughed at me and told me that I was wrong. SO....I went to the UPS store. They were more than willing to tape boxes together for me....
Are you talking about using the boxes for Priority mail or turning them inside out for international uses? If it's Priority mail, I've had 2 PO managers tell me you can do this! I swear, USPS is so inconsistent!
I'm talking about taping Priority mail boxes together. I've turned Flat rate boxes inside out and used them to ship internationally...there was no issue there. But the second I asked if I could take Priority mail boxes together the woman laughed at me and told me no way. >_> UPS is far more expensive sure, but let me tell you....they are far less rude and more than willing to help out.
Ok, that woman is an idiot! She's basically losing a Priority mail sale right there. That's the reason why the PO manager told me you can tape the boxes up like that...they want you to use their service and if you are using the FREE boxes to mail it priority mail, all the more better. Just tape up the boxes and don't go to that woman's counter section next time.
Since I didn't notice a price listed yet, priority mail from Las Vegas, Nevada to Eugene, Oregon was $17. Not bad for an SD13!
Thanks nikita - this is so neat. And it works so well I send my MSD today. You don't have to use the big Boxes for the MSDs they have smaller ones who work well for them ^^ Same amount of boxes (3), tape and voila!
I had the same problem, I even asked for the manager and he told me no too. So I walked out and went to the P.O. by my mothers house and they took it with no problem.
i just use brown paper i get at the dollar tree for a buck to cover it, and they don't know, and i tape the sides and top and bottom with tape.
What about a box for just a head? I have a box, but I'm curious as to what I should put inside, to keep the head safe, as I was really stupid, and threw away the packing peanuts and the bubble wrap that came with the head when it was delivered to me.
If you are in the US, the Priority Mail box that is 7"x7"x6" is perfect for shipping heads. Just ask at your local PO if they have any in the back if they don't already have them out by the other free supplies.
Well, I already have a suitable box. I was just wondering on how to PACK it. What goes on the inside to protect the head and that jazz.
Definitely wrap the head with bubblewrap to prevent it from getting any marks on it. Wrap the head in 2-3 layers, depending on how thin the bubble wrap is. I would also use the packing peanuts to fill up the box.
Thank you so much for the tip!!! I did that first time when I shipped my doll out ;_; I wonder if anyone experienced the same issue as I did when I went to the post office? they said it's illegal to use their FREE boxes to do something like this [or it's just my post office branch that's really picky ;_;'.....well....not really, she's their Supervisor.] did they just change the rule or something? the last post was in 2007 X'D
It it not just your post office. I believe it is true. You can use it as one box but you cannot break it and make a big box out of it to ship. Because then it won't be what it was suppose to be and they are not there to give you free supplies to be altered for say 'personal use'. It is property of government (?) It is also illegal to wrap their box up and ship another form of shipment (say priority box and use it to mail media mail for cheaper rate). They don't want people to take advantage and not purchase other kind of boxes from them (which I understand totally). (You can still ask for their boxes but don't tell them that's how it will be used....although I am not sure that is morally corrected or not but that's another whole diff issue) I ran out of boxes so I start to ship dolls disassembled in smaller boxes. You can always go to grocery stores or something and ask for unwanted boxes or something they don't mind giving them to you I"ve seen people ask, you can make your own boxes out of those maybe!
I think it's just the post offices you use. I know of some who will not allow you to use a box say from McDonald's that once held packs of mustard unless you cover it. Others, they honestly don't care as long as it has an address on it from you to say Aunt Sue. Around here, it seems to be the post offices.
You'd think, as a government agency of sorts, they'd be on the same page all around but it looks like that isn't the case. My post office where I mail the majority of my stuff and have my PO box (which isn't even in my own zip code yet it's closer to me) has told me repeatedly that they don't care if I use 2 or 3 of their Priority Mail boxes taped together to mail something so long as it's going to be sent Priority Mail. They would rather have me still use their service than heading over to Mailbox Etc./Kinkos, having them pack it for me or purchase a box from there and sending the item via UPS/FedEx. You definitely want to ask someone at the post office you are going to be mailing from what their policy is on taping together than 1 of their Priority Mail boxes to ship an item before you attempt to mail the doll. This will save you lots of headache in the future!
awww thank you so much for clarify this XD it's a lot more clear now >w< so next time I will flip the box and do the same wrapping method XD so they won't know HAHA!*shot* thank you so much again m>_<m
