making a bjd with 3d pen?

Apr 5, 2021

    1. I'm curious, did anyone do it?

I don't know the 3d pen material but i doubt it's possible to make the whole doll. However, i'm thinking about the inner skeleton or as a base/core sculpt (i.e use clay on top of it)

I've seen different ways to make a bjd including 3d printing. But what about 3d pen?

    2. I think it would be a great idea! Most 3D pens I've seen have setting for PLA or ABS, but if you're using it for an inner armature material wouldn't really matter. Cheap 3D pens can be had for around $20 so it's a small investment.

It would actually be a great tool for sculpting to match a drawing. If you print out your drawing of a planned doll to scale you can trace the shapes with the 3D pen and put them together for an accurate base to sculpt over with clay.

If you look on youtube there are actually tons of 3D pen artists that create finished sculptures and figures using only a pen and filament. One trick is to use a soldering iron to smooth it for a more finished texture than the pen can provide.

Here's an example of a terrible 'wig' I tried making with a 3D pen! I drew shapes on paper, assembled them into a 3D shape, then used the pen to fill in the gaps!

    3. Yeah ! I actually saw a 3d pen artist make stuff by literally painting on the blueprint and then building on top of that and making it 3d ! And the parts were hollow because he didnt have to fill them up and i was like hmmmm that would save some time lol

And with that iron trick you mentioned, i think it would be possible to make the doll without using much clay ..! I'll look into it

The wig you made, besides the soild-look of the material, i think it looks great !
Makes me think that the pen would make good helmets/horns/hats etc

      Thank you @Sour_Dotz

    4. This video is really cool, the mom and little girl are both very talented, haha. The girl makes a mermaid tail, and the mom makes essentially a whole outfit (I think the boots are my favorite!).

Edit to add: this tutorial is literally making a ball jointed "figurine"!!!! :D
Edit 2: try to fix link haha!

And that figurine vid is cool !! I saw another one making it with a hinge joint ! So cool, i haven't seen that before !

      Thanks @strawberry_sea !

Edit: it works now, thanks ! And they're so adorable !! I didnt expect the clothes would look good without smoothing it out so thats cool!

    9. Wow I didn't know it was possible to go that complex with a 3D pen.

    11. I’ve thought about it some days ago too. I think it is possible if you are skilled in using the 3D pen and tools related, like the smoothing tool. It could be a more convenient choice than the air drying clay, because it dries much faster.:3nodding:

    12. What type of clay would be best for sculpting on top of 3D filament? Polymer clay is right out because I don't think it'll survive being baked, but air dry clay doesn't really stick to plastic that readily.

    13. There's always epoxy.

    14. Sanago is my 3d pen addiction channel! He's so hilarious.

And, seconding a two part epoxy of some kind. It'll adhere to most anything quite solidly in my experience. Darn, now I'm curious to play around with a 3d pen....
